First Autochthonous Cases of Canine Thelaziosis in Slovakia

Parasites & Vectors (2017) 10:179 DOI 10.1186/s13071-017-2128-2 SHORT REPORT Open Access First autochthonous cases of canine thelaziosis in Slovakia: a new affected area in Central Europe Viktória Čabanová1, Peter Kocák2, Bronislava Víchová1 and Martina Miterpáková1* Abstract Background: The spirurid nematode Thelazia callipaeda, also called the “Oriental eyeworm”, is the causative agent of canine and human ocular thelaziosis. In the past few years it has started to spread across central Europe and new endemic areas have been established. The present study reports on the first four autochthonous cases of canine ocular thelaziosis in the territory of Slovakia, Central Europe. Results: All cases were recorded in dogs living in eastern Slovakia, near the border with the Ukraine. All worms collected were investigated morphologically and their identification further confirmed at the molecular level by PCR amplification and direct sequencing. Nucleotide sequences of partial T. callipaeda cox1 and 28S rDNA gene fragments isolated from Slovak dogs were submitted to the GenBank database under accession numbers KY476400 and KY476401, respectively. Conclusions: Considering that all four cases were diagnosed in animals that had never travelled abroad, there is clear evidence of an autochthonous occurrence and thereby the further spread of T. callipaeda across Europe. Moreover, at latitude of 48°N, these cases might be considered as the northernmost recorded cases of autochthonous in western and Central Europe. Uvedeným rozhodnutím sa k 1. 2. 2009 stali súčasťou CVRV Piešťany ako samostatné výskumné ústavy bez právnej subjektivity i Výskumný ústav rastlinnej výroby (VÚRV) Piešťany a Výskumný ústav trávnych porastov a horského poľnohospodárstva (VÚTPHP) Banská Bystrica, ktoré boli do 31. -

ABSTRACT: The Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union is reflected in the development of agricultural pro- duction in Slovakia. The development of livestock production faced significant changes reflected in its overall decrease. The decrease in the level of agricultural production in Slovakia between 2002 and 2010 is shown by several indicators assessed in this paper. Its main aim is to highlight differences in Slovak agriculture at the level of LAU I, which are districts of Slovakia, according to the selected indicators of agricultural production between 2002 and 2010. We analyse the development of regional differences in Slovak agriculture that have widened under the influence of the EU Com- mon Agricultural Policy. The development of selected indicators of agricultural production was analysed using the change index, which best represents differences in the development of agriculture in the Slovak regions. The active and dead meanders display the great dynamics of flood - plains over centuries behind the spectacular hydromorpho - logical process. The Tisza River is just one fine example (Figure 1). But, we also can see significant man-made river straightening and degradation. To understand eco- systems, it is sometimes good to have a broader per- spective of a birds view than just to stand on the river banks and see what is close. 3 km The Tisza concludes the trilogy of major tributaries in the Middle Danube. Research and Doctoral Theses in Progress Patrimonialisation of Hungarian Art Nouveau Architecture in the Carpathian Basin through the example of Budapest, Bratislava, Tîrgu Mureş and Subotica1 Lilla Zámbó PhD student in History Eötvös Loránd University – École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales Abstract By representing the national independence goals, the national style, Hungarian Art Nouveau architecture bore a strong identity constructing character in the Carpathian Basin. Notwithstanding, these aspects led not only to many misunderstandings towards Art Nouveau heritage, but they also influenced its afterlife. For almost half a century, no serious attempts have been made to re-evaluate it. This paper shows an on-going PhD research, which is a comparative analysis of the “patrimonialisation” (heritagization) process of this national Art Nouveau architecture diachronically and synchronically in Budapest (Hungary), Bratislava (Slovakia), Subotica (Serbia) and Tîrgu Mureş (Romania). The way in which Art Nouveau architecture was understood and treated by the Hungarian, Slovak, Serbian, and Romanian society in the territorial unit of the Habsburg Monarchy and within the new borders (after World War I) will be discussed in the doctoral thesis through the example of four representative buildings. The critical analysis will enable us to reveal the changing mentality towards the style and the differences of the national monument protection procedures in each city. The aim of this research is to reconstruct the patrimonialisation
