Publicado por: Juventud Rebelde Mientras esperamos al domingo para conocer el primer corte de la preselección cubana de béisbol, con vistas al torneo Premundial en Puerto Rico, les propongo examinar el equipo anunciado este jueves por Estados Unidos. Entre sus 24 peloteros, los estadounidenses eligieron a 12 lanzadores y 12 jugadores de posición. Ellos siempre son muy cautelosos con su staff de pitcheo y ahora aumentaron las precauciones con un calendario tan intenso, pues para llegar a la final en Puerto Rico tendrán que jugar al menos 12 partidos (seis en la primera etapa, cuatro en la segunda y dos como mínimo en el play off por el cetro). Todos los jugadores de la plantilla norteña pertenecen a organizaciones de Grandes Ligas, aunque ninguno figura entre los 40 elegibles para la presente temporada. Curiosamente, hay seis hombres de Kansas City Royals y tres de Colorado Rockies. En cambio, Chicago Cubs y Philadelphia Phillies aportaron dos. El colectivo técnico, encabezado por el experimentado manager Ernie Young, se inclinó solamente por dos receptores: Brian Jeroloman (Toronto Blue Jays) y Jordan Pacheco (Colorado Rockies). Asimismo, eligieron a seis jugadores de cuadro: Brian Barden (Florida Marlins), Brian Bocock (Philadelphia Phillies), Brad Eldred (Colorado Rockies), Eric Hosmer (Kansas City Royals), Mike Moustakas (Kansas City Royals) y Cord Phelps (Cleveland Indians). Además, llevarán cuatro jardineros: Todd Frazier (Cincinnati Reds), Jamie Hoffman (Los Angeles Dodgers), Brett Jackson (Chicago Cubs) y Mike Trout (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim). Finalmente, entre sus 12 serpentineros hay cinco zurdos: Tim Collins (Kansas City Royals), Danny Duffy (Kansas City Royals), Mike Montgomery (Kansas City Royals), Royce Ring (New York Yankees) y Everett Teaford (Kansas City Royals). Los demás son derechos: Chris Archer (Chicago Cubs), Bruce Billings (Colorado Rockies), Anthony Carter (Chicago White Sox), Justin De Fratus (Philadelphia Phillies), Bryan Henry (Arizona Diamondbacks), Andre Lamontagne (Milwaukee Brewers) y Todd Redmond (Atlanta Braves). Varios de estos hombres han integrado anteriormente otras selecciones de Estados Unidos. Por ejemplo, Brian Barden estuvo en los Juegos Olímpicos de Beijing 2008 y Todd Redmond repite del equipo que ganó el oro en la Copa del Mundo 2009. El equipo norteño entrena por estos días en Carolina del Norte, donde topará con Canadá y Puerto Rico antes de viajar a la Isla del Encanto. Por cierto, los boricuas quieren olvidar el fiasco que sufrieron como anfitriones en los pasados Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe, cuando se fueron sin medallas. Para ello, nombraron una preselección de 28 peloteros, donde figuran ex Grandes Ligas como Carlos Delgado, Juan Igor González, Saúl «Monaguillo» Rivera, Fernando Cabrera, Enrique Calero, Alex Cora, Rubén Gotay, Robert Andino, Hiram Bocachicca, Armando Ríos y Ramón Vázquez. También México prepara un equipo competitivo, según anunció Alonso Pérez, presidente de la Federación azteca de béisbol. «Vamos a formar un grupo muy completo. La idea es que cada equipo de la Liga del Pacífico aporte un jugador de alto nivel y otros dos no tan conocidos para trabajar juntos», dijo Pérez a la agencia EFE. Recordemos que México ganó la medalla de plata este año en los Juegos de Mayagüez, al perder 3-2 el partido por el oro contra República Dominicana.
