POST-ELECTION BAHAMAS: Perry Christie & PLP Resumes Gov’t; Fmr PM Ingraham Resigns During Ballot Counting

By ARTHIA NIXON Caribbean News Editor Photos: Bahamas Information Services

BAHAMAS: Perry Gladstone Christie was voted in as Prime Minister of The Bahamas on May 7, in what many are considering a landslide victory for the Progressive Liberal Party. As those who visited the archipelago would know, The Bahamas is actually comprised of seven hundred islands and cays with New Providence/Nassau as the capital and several other Out/Family Islands as major tourist destinations. Within a few hours of the polls closing, the numbers were coming in show- ing clearly that the nation was willing to accept a third political party with Branville McCartney and the Democratic National Alliance getting quite more votes in some constituencies than expected. However, when it became clear that the Free National Movement was not winning, precelebrations began for PLP supporters who took to the streets waving flags and wearing paraphernalia. The most unpredicted event for the evening came when Hubert Ingraham, leader of the Free National Movement resigned from his seat and the party’s leadership while the ballots were still being counted. This occurred after it was revealed the he won his in Abaco, the island known infamously as the place where R&B singer Aaliyah’s plane crashed after she wrapped shooting her video Rock The Boat. The FNM will now be led by Dr. Hubert Minnis. Critics claim that this election was more dramatic than most with Bernadette Christie, who is now The Bahamas’ First Lady getting spit on during the campaign, people wearing shirts of certain parties being attacked and even dogs having party names painted on them. On May 8th, a Swearing-In Ceremony was held at Government House. Like many other Caribbean countries which were formerly ruled by Britain, the Governor-General acts a representative for the British monarch, in this case Queen Elizabeth II. “… [I] thank the people of our beloved commonwealth who yesterday expressed their confidence in me and in my party,” said Prime Minister Christie. “The voice of the people was heard [Monday] with great thunder and awesome power. It was also heard with crystalline clarity. I am humbled by the mandate that has thus been bestowed upon me.” He added: “Let therefore say here and now, before your Excellencies and all here assembled, and to all the people of our country, that I will be true and faithful to you; that I will give the very best of myself at all times; and that my colleagues and I will leave no stone unturned in our common pursuit of a better and brighter future for all of you.” Prime Minister Christie wasted no time in appointing his new cabinet. Christie himself will serve as Minister of Finance with the Hon. Philip Brave Davis is sworn in as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works & Urban Development. Also appointed were Obediah Wilchcombe, Minister of Tourism; Jerome Fitzgerald, Minister of Education, Science & Technology; Ryan Pinder, Minister of Financial Services; Senator Allyson Maynard Gibson, Attorney General & Minister of Legal Affairs; Damian Gomez, Minister of State in the Ministry of Legal Affairs; Michael Halkitis, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance; and Senator Keith Bell, Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security. When The Florida Star was purchased in 2002, Clara McLaughlin realized that she would need advice from a communi‐ cations attorney. The Star had a reputation of providing news that would be of value and interest to the African American community of Florida and Clara wanted to make sure that all of the news presented would be accurate. In fact, the paper not only improved in appearance, but it won the first Eagle Award from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for being the most factual in the area. It has won several city and state awards, as it continues to grow and develop. In fact, Clara won the Diversity Award last year because of the Star’s diversity. Because the company had a huge loss after the death of its founder, Eric Simpson, Mr. Dees agreed to work with McLaughlin and to her surprise, he did so, often , pro bono, which was a key component in helping the company achieve. Ms. McLaughlin nominated Mr. Dees for the Jacksonville Business Journal Diversity Award after they sought organizations and people who supported and cham‐ pioned Northeast Florida’s minority‐owned businesses. With Dees help, The Florida Star regained its readership and accuracy. The Florida Star still is the largest, oldest and most read African American newspaper in northeast Florida.

Rally By ARTHIA NIXON Florida/Georgia Star

With Mother’s Day is the air and many churches and organizations honoring moms, it’s considered taboo to pay homage to one demographic in the mix – teen moms. Whether teen mom was the result of planned or unplanned pregnancy, it still exists in the black community and as it relates to the local community, statistics show that Glynn County is presently leading the Georgia’s coastal counties for the second year in a row when it comes to teen moms. Angela ‘MzElite’ Smith, is a Brunswick criminal investigator who knows the stigma associated with teen pregnancy all too well. In addition to being a teen mom, the now married wife and mother of four children is focused on showing young women that a baby does not mean their life ends. Instead of telling them that they have no more choices in life, Smith gets one on one to give them options to provide a better life for them and their children. Calling ALL youth of Glynn County & Smith is also geared up to produce “Baby… It’s Not The End: Push!”, surrounding areas! an event filled with poetry, spoken word, lyrical dance and more to motivate and inspire teen moms to get back on track on May 12 at the Ritz Theatre. The second of those two sacks forced a turnover on downs, and from there, Jacksonville's connected with Simmons to get inside the five yard line. Although he didn’t have the Wildcats at the top of his bracket, the President said he “knew Kentucky was good.” “I had them in the championship game. But in the end, I thought, they got all these freshmen,” he said. “These guys are too young. And keep in mind, at this time last year, three of the Wildcats’ five starters were still in high school. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist couldn’t even vote yet. But let’s face it, sometimes talent trumps experience. And sometimes, a bunch of young players, even if they’re used to being big fishes in their ponds, even if they’ve never played together before, they can buy into a system, they understand the concept of team, and they do something special right away. And that’s exactly what happened in Kentucky.” President Obama also thanked the team for their community service: BayBears Defeat Suns 6-1 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Mobile BayBears increased their lead in the South Division over Jacksonville to three games with a 6-1 win on Tuesday night. Mobile has won the first three games of the series, outscoring the Suns 19-2. The BayBears started quickly against Suns pitcher Zach Neal sending nine men to the plate in the first inning. The first four batters of the game singled to put Mobile in front 2-0. Brent Clevlen and Marc Krauss each drove in a run. Before the inning was over Alfredo Marte had driven in a run with a single, and Wladimir Sutil knocked in a run with a double for a 4-0 BayBears lead. It was the second time this season that the Suns allowed four runs in the first inning. In the second inning, David Nick led off with a single and Clevlen drove in his second run of the night with a ground out to make the score 5-0 BayBears. Zach Neal allowed five runs on seven hits in two innings on the night. The BayBears are the second team in the Southern League to reach 20 wins. The Suns scored their only run of the game in the fourth inning when Kyle Skipworth walked with one out and Kyle Jensen doubled behind him. Dallas Poulk then drove in his second run of the year with a sacrifice fly to center. Mobile added a run in the sixth inning when Sutil tripled to left and came in to score on a Rossmel Perez sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-1. Wladimir Sutil fin- ished the game 3-for-4, drove in a run and also scored. All three of his hits were for extra bases with two doubles and a triple. David Nick, Kyle Greene, and Marc Krauss each finished with two hits, and Brent Clevlen drove in two of the six runs for Mobile. Krauss, who was named the Southern League player of the week, has now hit safely in 17 of his last 19 games. Derek Eitel improved his record to 3-2 with the win. He pitched six innings allowing five hits and one run. It was the first earned run that a BayBears starting pitch- er has allowed in three games in this series. In the first eight games of the season series against Mobile, the Suns have scored just nine runs against BayBears starting pitchers. Suns starter Zach Neal pitched two innings, allowing seven hits and five runs to fall to 2-4. The BayBears have won nine of their last 12 games and scored at least six runs in six of the wins. The Suns have lost five of their last six and have been outscored 32-18. Game four of the series is Wednesday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05PM at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. LHP Graham Taylor (2-2, 5.23) will make his seventh start of the season for the Suns. The BayBears counter with RHP Chase Anderson (1-0, 2.63) as he starts his fifth game of the year.
