INTERCONNECTIONS AND UNEASY ALLIANCES BETWEEN THE BLACK AND SOUTH ASIAN DIASPORAS: A STUDY OF HIP HOP VIDEOS, FILM, AND LITERATURE VISHA GANDHI A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN ENGLISH YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO SEPTEMBER 2014 © Visha Gandhi, 2014 Interconnections and Uneasy Alliances Between the Black and South Asian Diasporas: A Study of Hip Hop Videos, Film, and Literature This dissertation challenges the belief that racialized communities do immediately support and identify with each other; my research on the Black and South Asian diasporas unearths the Orientalist thoughts and anti-Black racisms that exist in each respective community. Using the work of Edward Said in his text, Orientalism, and research on racial triangulation by Asian Americanist Claire Jean Kim, my work attempts to clarify the often-conflicted relations and dynamics between South Asians, Blacks, and whites. Chapter two of this dissertation looks at romantic and sexual involvement between different racial communities; I specifically look at the films Mississippi Masala and Bhaji on the Beach to delve into the cultural rarity that is the Black-South Asian romance. Chapter three discusses Black Orientalism in American hip hop videos by such artists as Truth Hurts, and Timbaland and Magoo. Finally, chapter four looks at gendered dynamics and longings for blackness in the texts Consensual Genocide, by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, and Londonstani, by Gautam Malkani. ii This dissertation is dedicated to my family, and especially to Catherine Thompson, for her unending support. And to all hip hop brown girls who practice their appreciation respectfully.

  • Hip-Hop Realness and the White Performer Mickey Hess
Critical Studies in Media Communication Vol. 22, No. 5, December 2005, pp. 372Á/389 Hip-hop Realness and the White Performer Mickey Hess Hip-hop’s imperatives of authenticity are tied to its representations of African-American identity, and white rap artists negotiate their place within hip-hop culture by responding to this African-American model of the authentic. This article examines the strategies used by white artists such as Vanilla Ice, Eminem, and the Beastie Boys to establish their hip- hop legitimacy and to confront rap music’s representations of whites as socially privileged and therefore not credible within a music form where credibility is often negotiated through an artist’s experiences of social struggle. The authenticating strategies of white artists involve cultural immersion, imitation, and inversion of the rags-to-riches success stories of black rap stars. Keywords: Hip-hop; Rap; Whiteness; Racial Identity; Authenticity; Eminem Although hip-hop music has become a global force, fans and artists continue to frame hip-hop as part of African-American culture. In his discussion of Canadian, Dutch, and French rap Adam Krims (2000) noted the prevailing image of African-American hip-hop as ‘‘real’’ hip-hop.1 African-American artists often extend this image of the authentic to frame hip-hop as a black expressive culture facing appropriation by a white-controlled record industry. This concept of whiteÁ/black interaction has led white artists either to imitate the rags-to-riches narratives of black artists, as Vanilla Ice did in the fabricated biography he released to the press in 1990, or to invert these narratives, as Eminem does to frame his whiteness as part of his struggle to succeed as a hip-hop artist.

  • Pression and Police Violence Through Community Organizing, Political Policy, and Force
DISTRIBUTION: 140 Havemeyer Street, Brooklyn, NY 11222 +1.718.383.5352 [email protected] PUBLICITY: SERENE AGENCY Nia Rice [email protected] LOGLINE A Black man witnesses a police officer murder his brother during a routine traffic stop and responds by igniting a movement to fight police violence. SYNOPSIS Back In Minneapolis is a modern-day Malcolm X story, told through the eyes of a Black man who witnesses his brother’s murder by police during a routine traffic stop. He responds to the murder by generating a movement of Black people to fight against systemic oppression and police violence through community organizing, political policy, and force. LINKS Facebook Website Trailer Press Materials #blackinminneapolis DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT “Am I going to live?” is a thought that every Black person in America, including myself, has had when they are pulled over by the police. I had been thinking about the ideas in Black In Minneapolis for years, and when I saw the Facebook Live video of Philando Castile as he was murdered by Minneapolis police, I put pen to paper and wrote the script. Black In Minneapolis was filmed mainly in Minneapolis, where I grew up, and parts of St. Paul with a local cast and crew. This is the first time I’ve made a politically charged film, and I wanted to ground the fiction of the story in reality. I have a strong background in documentary filmmaking, so I took that knowledge and used it to interview real people about their experiences with law enforcement. The film is made up of these interviews spliced between the narrative portions of the film.
