A Local History of Ironville & Codnor Park
A Local History of Ironville & Codnor Park 1 In the Beginning Before Ironville or Codnor Park there was a place called Smithycote. Smithycote was a settlement in the Codnor Park area, mentioned in the Domesday Book. The names of the Anglo Saxon residents and other information is also detailed. Now “long lost” probably “disappearing” when Codnor Castle was constructed and the surrounding parkland developed. Codnor Park including what is now known as The Forge was set up by the de Grey family who were granted the area by William the Conqueror. For their part in the Norman Conquest of England Close to the village is one of only two medieval castles retaining its original medieval architecture in the whole of the county of Derbyshire, (the only other being Peveril Castle in the Peak District). Codnor Castle has a very rich history and the castle site dates back to the 12th century. The castle was the home and power base for one of medieval England’s most powerful families for 300 years - the De Grey family, also known as the Baron's Grey of Codnor. This medieval fortress was once grand enough to play host to royal visits including that of King Edward II in 1342. The Castle is open to the Public every second Sunday of the month throughout the year. The de Greys were loyal to the King whoever he was (they fought for Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth and ingratiated themselves to the victor Henry VII, and so their castle survived when others such as Duffield Castle were destroyed in 1267 after the 2nd Barons War. -

R07 HSUK East Midlands Rail Strategy
HSUK EAST MIDLANDS RAIL STRATEGY The East Midlands conurbation is an urban agglomeration centred upon Leicester, Nottingham and Derby. Although its total population is somewhat less than the 2,500,000 of the West Midlands, it is a similar distance from London, and it would seem logical to have developed HS2 in a manner similar to the M1, choosing an alignment that enabled both West and East Midlands to be served upon completion of the first phase of the project. Yet Phase 1 of HS2 was exclusively focussed upon the West Midlands, and high speed rail will only extend to the East Midlands in the second phase of the project. The proposed HS2 route will completely bypass Leicester, and an ‘East Midlands Interchange’ will be located on the Erewash Valley route at Toton, equally remote from both Derby and Nottingham. Unsurprisingly, there is much concern as to whether the proposed ‘East Midlands Interchange’, located remote from all 3 primary urban centres, will adequately serve the East Midlands, providing connectivity enhancements commensurate with the proposed multi-billion pound investment. The following diagrams define existing East Midlands rail connectivity, and assess the capability of both HS2 and the alternative High Speed UK proposals to effect the necessary connectivity improvements. Includes Recollections of the Erewash Canal (Derby Road Bridge, Long Eaton, to Trent Lock) And Some Recollections of 1947 And German Aeroplane shot down over Long Eaton By Thomas Godfrey THE EARLY DAYS In the early part of the eighteenth century the only methods of transport inland of goods and people were either on foot, on horseback, by packhorse, by horse drawn carriage or wagon, or by boat or barge on such rivers as were navigable. Long distance carrying of goods in bulk was becoming necessary because of the Industrial Revolution. The construction of canals provided the means of connecting places to rivers that were navigable. A horse could pull a barge load many more times heavy than a cart load and therefore provided a cheaper method of bulk transport. Canals were constructed not only where there was no available river but also to by-pass rapids and similar obstacles in otherwise navigable rivers. In the Long Eaton area the Erewash Canal was constructed in 1777-79 to bring coal from the Erewash Valley Coalfield down to the River Trent and onwards to Leicester via the River Soar. The River Erewash was too narrow, shallow and meandering to make it worthwhile attempting to make it navigable. The Cranfleet canal by-passed the rapids at Red Hill and opened up navigation on the River Trent eastwards to Nottingham and the Humber. -

Turn right after the pond, up to a gate and turn left onto Engine Lane. When you reach the old pit buildings (adorned with a mural and pit-wheel) turn right into Phoenix Road. A - Moorgreen Colliery – The site of Collier’s Wood, now parkland, was once one of the largest of Eastwood’s many pits, employing 1,300 people and producing one million tonnes of coal per year at its height. It was also one of the last to close, ceasing production in 1985. The colliery featured in 4 D.H. Lawrence’s writing, notably in Women in Love, where Lawrence described the modernisation process of the early 1900s. -

The area is predominantly characterised by mixed farming with remnant habitats associated with river valleys, meadows and woodlands. Woodland cover is variable, associated with former estate woodlands, more recent plantations and occasional semi natural woodland including some ancient woodland in the south of the area. -
The Cromford Canal Walk
The History and Full Walk Almost 200 years ago William Jessop, in partnership with Benjamin Outram, took on the engineering of his first major canal, The Cromford Cromford, in Derbyshire. In 1788 it had been decided that a new link to Manchester and the North West would be advantageous, and the first stage would be a Canal canal from Langley Mill on the Erewash canal to Cromford, a distance of 14 ¾ miles. August 24, 1789 saw the first meeting of the Cromford Canal Co. which was held at The Old Bath Inn, Matlock Bath, and among its shareholders were Sir Richard Arkwright of cotton mill fame, Philip Gell, local lead mine owner, the Beresfords, and the Jessop family, all of whom had connections with industry and mining. Richard Arkwright was born in Preston, Lancashire in 1732, the thirteenth child of a tailor. He was apprenticed to a barber and practised the trade in Bolton. In 1769 he invented a machine for spinning cotton, which, since it was powered by water, became known as the Waterframe. Arkwright's first mill at Cromford(1) was built in 1771 and the whole mill site was finished by 1791. At the same time, he developed Cromford into one of the first industrial villages, including workers' cottages, a market place and a lock-up. Great Northern Basin Arkwright's Mill, with its powered machinery and large workforce, Langley Mill became the model for others throughout Britain and abroad, earning Arkwright the title “Father of the Factory Systems”. Arkwright was knighted in 1786 and became High Sheriff of Walking Britain's Derbyshire in 1787. -
