Principal photography commenced in the summer and will continue until early November in and around Toronto, with the first episode of Season 5, “Murdoch of the Klondike,” filmed on location in Dawson City, Yukon. Encore episodes of Murdoch Mysteries are currently airing weekly on Citytv. Season five broadcast details will be announced at a later date. “With new characters and locales, Season 5 will be the most exciting yet for Murdoch Mysteries,” said Claire Freeland, Director of Development and Production, Rogers Media Television. “Beloved by viewers of all ages, Murdoch Mysteries has been a resounding success in Canada and internationally over the last four seasons and we are proud of the enduring legacy this series will leave its countless loyal fans.” “While we are sad to contemplate the end of Murdoch Mysteries, we are grateful to Rogers and Citytv for believing in the series and taking this journey with us over the past seven years," said Christina Jennings, Chairman and CEO, Shaftesbury and executive producer, Murdoch Mysteries. "We've watched the show grow with the passionate support of audiences in Canada and around the world, and look forward to bringing the storyline to a fulfilling conclusion for fans during our final season. Thank you to one of the most talented casts and crews I’ve ever had the privilege of working with for creating an unforgettable series.” The fifth season premiere will feature an array of guest stars joining the cast in the Yukon, including include Aaron Ashmore (Warehouse 13; Smallville) as author Jack London and U.K. actress Jill Halfpenny (Coronation Street) as Elizabeth Bryant, a tough-as-nails hotel owner who finds herself accused of murder. Plus, Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman also makes a guest appearance this season. Based on Canadian author Maureen Jennings's popular Detective Murdoch novels, Murdoch Mysteries is set in late 1890s Toronto and explores the intriguing world of William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson), a detective using radical techniques for the time to solve the city's most gruesome murders. Murdoch's colleagues are coroner Dr. Julia Ogden (Hélène Joy, Durham County), a staunch ally who shares the detective's fascination for forensic science; Constable George Crabtree (Jonny Harris, Hatching, Matching, Dispatching), Murdoch's eager but sometimes naïve right-hand man; and Inspector Brackenreid (Thomas Craig, Coronation Street), Murdoch’s sceptical yet reluctantly supportive boss. The series has been sold in more than 100 countries worldwide. Season 5 of Murdoch Mysteries will present Detective Murdoch with fresh frustrations in his relationship with Julia. Viewers will be introduced to Julia’s protégé, Dr. Grace Howard (Georgina Reilly, Pontypool), a headstrong, ambitious new coroner. In addition to investigating a murder in Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush, the final season will see Murdoch uncovering the intrigue behind the invention of the electric car, and exploring the drama on and offstage when a travelling opera company is hit with murder. • Criminal Investigation and Canadian National Identity in Murdoch Mysteries
Sheley, E. 2020. Criminal Investigation and Canadian National Identity in Murdoch Mysteries. Entertainment and Sports Law Journal, 18: 7, pp. 1–6. DOI: https://doi.org/10.16997/eslj.253 INTERVENTION Criminal Investigation and Canadian National Identity in Murdoch Mysteries Erin Sheley California Western School of Law, US [email protected] This essay argues that Canadian detective show Murdoch Mysteries uses the legal conflict between Canadian criminal investigation and American foreign policy to shore up an idea of Canadian national iden- tity against an explicitly American other. First, I discuss the character of William Murdoch as a distinct departure from the literary tradition of the nineteenth-century police officer. Second, I show howMurdoch Mysteries attempts to serve as social criticism concerning socio-legal issues still relevant to Canadian society in the present day. Third, I argue that the show’s ongoing depiction of criminal jurisdictional conflict between the Toronto constabulary and Her Majesty’s government in Ottawa reveals anxieties over the present-day American threat to Canadian security and way of life. Finally, I conclude that the repeated narrative contrast between Murdoch’s scientific criminal investigations and federal strategies of American appeasement serves the secondary purpose of displacing domestic social anxieties onto an American other and reifying a Canadian national identity premised on objectivity and the rule of law. Keywords: criminal law; television drama; Canada; national identity; communications regulation; broadcasting Long-running Canadian detective show Murdoch Mysteries (2008) was an unexpected hit; even the show’s creators have expressed surprise that the adventures of strait-laced police detective William Murdoch—who uses scientific gadgetry to solve crimes in Victorian- and Edwardian-era Toronto—would become one of the regularly highest-rated programmes on the public CBC network (Stinson 2014: B5).

Graphic Standards Manual 2.0 The New Brand Architectural Conservancy Ontario’s (ACO) new brand has been designed to increase overall public awareness of the organization and to help consolidate a network of branches. The focal point of the logo is the acronym (ACO) within a square shape. Structurally, a plus sign divides the shape into four quadrants – the letter A occupies one half of the square and the letters C and O the other half. The letterforms, like the structure, are very simple. The terracotta colour was chosen to reflect the colour of brick often found in historical Ontario buildings. The new logo becomes a unifying symbol for the organization – enabling each branch office to attach to the ACO logo an image that is relevant to their community. And finally, the logo will provide a striking and memorable image of ACO when it appears on project site signage throughout the province. QUEERING THE SCRIPT 93 minutes / CANADA Written and Directed by Gabrielle Zilkha ** OFFICIAL SELECTION – 2019 Inside Out LGBT Film Festival ** ** OFFICIAL SELECTION – 2019 Frameline43 ** Recipient of the Frameline Completion Fund ** OFFICIAL SELECTION – 2019 Outfest LGBT Film Festival ** Winner of the Special Programming Award for Freedom ** OFFICIAL SELECTION - AGLIFF 2019 ** ** OFFICIAL SELECTION – RAINDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2019 ** Queering the Script is produced by Shaftesbury with the participation of Hollywood Suite, the Canada Media Fund, the Frameline Completion Fund, and with the assistance of The Canadian Film or Video Tax Credit and The Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit. Logline: Giving queer fandom a voice in the conversation about LGBTQ+ representation from “Xena” to “The L Word” to “Pose”, QUEERING THE SCRIPT examines the rising power of the fans and audience shaping representation on TV, the relationship between fandom and activism, and what lies ahead for visibility and inclusiveness. Synopsis: Queerness on television has moved from subtext, in series such as “Xena: Warrior Princess”, to all- out multi season relationships between women, as seen on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, “Lost Girl”, and “Carmilla”. But things still aren’t perfect. In 2016, a record number of queer women died on fictional shows, which broke the hearts of queer fans and launched a successful fight for better, more diverse LGTBQ2S+ representation. Stars such as Ilene Chaiken, Stephanie Beatriz, Lucy Lawless and Angelica Ross join with the voices of numerous kickass fangirls in this fast-paced history of queer women’s representation of contemporary television. QUEERING THE SCRIPT not only charts the evolution of queerness, but also demonstrates the extraordinary impact of activism on its many diverse fans, ensuring that they see themselves accurately portrayed on screen.
