The City of Toronto's Sector Development Office provides economic support for a number of priority sectors in Toronto, including the Green Sector. Toronto's Green Sector shows robust activity, as of 2016, over 25 000 people were employed in the Green Sector. Green Sector employment is growing twice as fast as the rest of Toronto's economy (4.2% vs. 2.1% annually between 2012-2017). Methodology The companies included in this directory are located generally within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The rationale for including companies located outside the boundaries of the City of Toronto is to capture potential supply chain linkages between organizations and to include the travel patterns that Toronto residents might cover for employment and the purchasing of services and products. The geographic parameters of the GTA better capture these travel patterns and reflect a more cohesive group of green businesses operating in and serving the areas where Toronto residents live and interact. Figure 2: Map of the Greater Toronto Area Various industry experts were also solicited for suggestions regarding green businesses that might be included in this directory. By supporting these local businesses we keep jobs within the City of Toronto and the GTA. The intent is to update and publish this directory on a regular basis. Defining the Green Sector City of Toronto identifies three "green" levels in society: the Green Economy, the Green Sector, and Green Tech. The Green Sector is the economic sector which we report on here. The Green Economy: Businesses and organizations in all parts of the economy that use environmental practices that are significantly better in reducing the impact of human activity on the environment than the current standard practices in society. The Green Sector: Economic activities (processes, products or services) that reduces environmental impacts through: 1. Environmental protection and remediation activities; 2. The sustainable use of natural resources which includes the supply chain of goods and services of recycled materials and other processes that reduce the consumption of natural resources; 3. The supply chain of goods and services that have been specifically modified or adopted to be significantly less energy or resource intensive than the industry standard. Green Tech: Pure play companies in the green sector that have developed environmental solutions (either products or services) that use significantly less energy or resources than the industry standard and current practices in society. This would exclude environmental servicing firms such as public transit and water treatment plants. The Five Subsectors We split the green sector into five subsectors which we define below. Each subsector also consists of numerous clusters of companies and organizations that work closely together. Many Green Sector companies fall under more than one subsector. Most companies are classified by the subsector in which most of their activity is focused on. However, organizations, namely NGOs, which equally address multiple green subsectors are classified under the category of Multiple Green Subsectors. There are also professional services firms that provide services focused on the green sector but without a sub-sector focus and these can be found under Professional Services for all Green Sectors. Bio-Economy Businesses and other organizations involved in the harvesting and preparation of bio-mass for use in non- industry standard types of products or service offerings. While the forest industry is a sustainable sector, the use of wood for purposes such as housing construction and furniture is part of society's norm and hence is not included here. Businesses involved in the production or sale of food and beverages and businesses engaged in the development and sale of pharmaceuticals or life sciences-related products are excluded. GREEN INDUSTRIES DIRECTORY 5 Green Buildings Businesses and other organizations engaged in building practices with materials and processes that are environmentally responsible and use significantly less energy or resources at all stages of a building's life-cycle (siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition). Businesses that install clean energy components to buildings, and businesses that install green roofs are included. Clean Energy Businesses and other organizations engaged in the manufacturing, distribution and/or servicing of renewable energy, energy storage, smart grid, or energy efficiency technologies and services. Resource Management Businesses and other organizations that focus on the sustainable use of natural resources, either through the management or development of natural resources, which ensures that the needs of the present are meet through environmentally responsible economic growth that does not compromise the ability of future generation to meet their own needs. Also included are businesses that focus on activities that are intended to prevent, reduce, or eliminate pollution or other forms of environmental degradation. This includes waste and water treatment, land remediation, recycling, products that are made from recycled goods. For Toronto - recycled wood is considered part of the Bio-Products sector. Sustainable Transportation Businesses and other organizations involved in the manufacturing of products that provide transportation of people and products by modes that use less energy and resources than the standard, and firms and organizations that provide those transportation services. This includes all transportation components such as electric vehicles, bikes, buses, trains, and public transit. It includes the full supply chain from manufacturing through to operation of public transport systems. Cluster Chain Segments Below are how the City defines each Cluster Chain (Supply Chain) Segment of the sector. Associations/NGOs Associations/NGOs, trade and industry organizations, charities, non-profit organizations and non- governmental organizations that have an interest in environmental issues. Education Providing education and training services to the green sector. Government/Government Agency Government departments and related organization such as public utilities. Manufacturing Organizations that either manufacture a product from raw materials or assembles a final product from a variety of manufactured components or sub-assemblies. GREEN INDUSTRIES DIRECTORY 6 Wholesale Companies that sell bulk products, usually in a business to business context Professional Services Professions which require a professional designation or certification such as accountants, engineers, lawyers who work primarily in the green sector listed. Research Organizations that provide or support primary or applied research - either based on technology development or other social or policy applications. This includes think tanks, research organizations, and policy institutes. Retail Organizations that sell to the end user. This can include firms that sell and install. Service Provider Providers of

The renewable portion consisted of 25% large hydro, 2% run-of-river hydro, 3% biomass, and less than 1% solar and wind power. On the fossil fuel side, natural gas contributed 45% (primarily for heating buildings) and transportation fuels (gasoline and diesel, but also bio-fuels) accounted for the remaining 24%. In 2015, total energy use was 59.3 million gigajoules (GJ), a 4% reduction from the 62 million GJ in 2007 (City of Vancouver, 2015a).

However, unlike Europe and the United States, Canada does not have compliance markets for TRECs. Compliance markets are facilitated by state-level RPS policies in the US, and various national RPS policies in Europe (including green certificate obligation policies). Canadian policy-makers have tended to use other policy approaches to promote renewable energy. • The variation between TREC systems and RPS policies across jurisdictions poses a challenge for a more integrated – and more liquid – TRECs market. In the US, differences between state-level programs have resulted in a fragmented and complex TRECs marketplace. Prices for TRECs have varied substantially over time, across jurisdictions, and are dependent on the specific attributes of an individual TREC (including the vintage, source, and location of the Sustainable Prosperity renewable resource).
