February—March 2011

CHAIRMAN CHARLES CHATS...

Happy New Year to you all! My new year’s resolution it to try to be polite and positive in my dealings with everyone.

Now for a negative the road from Highampton to Windmilland Cross is going to be closed from the 28th of February until the 11th of March. The official diversion is via Folly Gate and Dunsland Cross, a nice little round trip!

I hope that there are enough of you interested in books to keep our mobile library visiting us on alternate Tuesday afternoons at the Village Hall, you know the old adage “use it or lose it”. This is true of all the facilities in the village so please come and join in all the events held this year by the clubs and organisations, volunteers put a great deal of time and effort in to stage these events. Please support your school, Holy Cross Church, Burdon Grange and all clubs and societies, also, please in these difficult times, all your local businesses. If you have any talents to exploit please do so and help us keep a vibrant village. We hold our parish council meetings on the first Wednesday of each month and all your representatives would be pleased to hear from you if you need our help or wish to tell us something.

Charles Dumpleton (Parish Council Chairman)

A BIG THANK YOU!

Debbie Croft would like to say a BIG Thank You to everyone who attended and helped at her 40th Birthday Party, especially Mum, Kate and Jenny for all the help with the food.

I hope everyone had a great time, I certainly did and it was great to meet up with loads of people again.

I would also like to say Thank You for your enormous generosity of donations in lieu of presents to the Air Ambulance which has amounted to £620 and which I am sure you will agree they will be grateful for as this is a much needed service in our area.

Thanks again! Debbie Croft

Highampton Primary School 100 Year School Reunion

The reunion organising committee attended the School Christmas Fayre on the 4th December 2010 and presented the School with items that were purchased with the profits raised by the reunion event held in October 2010. A total of £450 was raised.

The committee presented a banner, which was specially commissioned for the reunion, but can be used by the School to promote it at any future events; a photo on canvass showing the pupils holding the celebratory mugs; two boxes of K-nex educational construction toys and a wooden bench with a plaque which is to become a permanent fixture on School grounds.

The teachers Mrs Barnett and Mrs Neal, along with the pupils, were delighted to receive the gifts on behalf of the School.

Don’t forget that celebratory mugs, limited edition and only £4.50 each are still available from Highampton Shop and the School. All profits made from the sale of the mugs will be donated to the School.

The reunion guest book and a scrap book of old school photos will be donated to Highampton Local History Group at its meeting to be held in February.

Halwill Community Market

Gents Barbers and Ladies Hairdressing During 2008 a group of volunteers decided to set up what they thought would be a few fund raising No Appointments (Except for colours & perms) events in the form of a monthly Coffee Morning Telephone 01837 53653 with stalls. However, the idea took off and here we 14 Fore Street Okehampton are in 2011 booked up with the Halwill Parish Hall Previously Trudy’s Hair Studio Sheepwash for a further 11 months. Our first date this year is 12th February.

The market is held on the second Saturday of each month from 10.00am to noon, with a variety of stalls including, meat, vegetables, cheese, plants, crafts and charity stalls.

We owe a big Thank You to the stall holders who have supported us over the months, some of them from the very beginning. It is an enjoyable morning where people can get together for a cuppa and a chat and also find that special “something” they T C M Plumbing have been looking for. Burst pipes? Taps dripping? Highampton Local History Group www.highampton-lhg.co.uk In December our members had an enjoyable social evening in the Golden Inn, Highampton, where we were served a sumptuous festive buffet in the privacy of the restaurant. Our thanks go to our secretary Mrs Mo

Morel for organising the evening.

The New Year marks a new start for the Group, with our meetings being moved to the fourth Wednesday of each month, with our first meeting of the year being held in the Village Hall on January 26th. Our speaker, on this occasion, will be Mr Brian Abell who will give an illustrated talk on his home town of

Hatherleigh. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and all are welcome.

Since the last gathering of the HLHG, our members have been privileged to acquire the very last signed copy of Rev Gerry Matthews book, Black Torrington, The Second Millennium. This hard back copy will make an invaluable addition to our archives. We have learnt that local historian Gerry Matthews is presently busy writing a similar book on the history of the neighbouring village of Bradford, which, hopefully, will be published later this year.

Moving forward to March, the HLHG has been invited to join the History Society to celebrate their thirty years as a group, with Radio Devon‟s Tony Beard in attendance. Tony, „The Wag from

Widecombe‟, has agreed to come along and give a talk on the history of Widecombe-on-the-Moor, where his family has lived for generations. At the moment, it is planned to hold this event in the Hatherleigh

Methodist Chapel, opposite the public car park, on Monday, March 14th, commencing at 7.30pm. This should prove to be a very interesting and entertaining evening. There will be a small charge of £2.00 each on the door, with paid up members of the Hatherleigh History Society paying £1.00.

For further information, please telephone Maurice Thomas on 01409 231460 or Brian Abell on 01837 810478.

News from Highampton Primary School

New Starters!

Welcome to Ruby Richards and Harriet Wright who joined the School in Reception this term.

The School would like to thank everyone who attended the Christmas play “It’s a Party” in the Village Hall just before Christmas. The children thoroughly enjoyed the evening, especially performing in front of such a packed appreciative audience.

Cinema Visit

The Spring term got off to an exciting start with the whole School visiting the cinema in Okehampton for a private showing of the recently released film, Megamind, on the first day back. The expedition, a Christmas treat, had to be cancelled last term due to bad weather and icy roads, but luckily it was possible to rearrange the date, and it certainly made for a difference first day of the term!

World War II

This term the pupils are learning about what life was like for children during the Second World War. An ARP Warden is due to visit the School to make sure they know what to do in an air raid, and they are looking forward to a trip to RNAS Yeovilton in a few weeks time.

Up-coming Events...

Look out for further details of a Coffee Morning in aid of Help For Heroes to be held at 10.30am on Friday 18 February 2011 and the annual Valentine’s Disco to be held on Friday 11th February 2011.
