Issue 7 February—March 2011 CHAIRMAN CHARLES CHATS... Happy New Year to you all! My new year’s resolution it to try to be polite and positive in my dealings with everyone. Now for a negative the road from Highampton to Windmilland Cross is going to be closed from the 28th of February until the 11th of March. The official diversion is via Folly Gate and Dunsland Cross, a nice little round trip! I hope that there are enough of you interested in books to keep our mobile library visiting us on alternate Tuesday afternoons at the Village Hall, you know the old adage “use it or lose it”. This is true of all the facilities in the village so please come and join in all the events held this year by the clubs and organisations, volunteers put a great deal of time and effort in to stage these events. Please support your school, Holy Cross Church, Burdon Grange and all clubs and societies, also, please in these difficult times, all your local businesses. If you have any talents to exploit please do so and help us keep a vibrant village. We hold our parish council meetings on the first Wednesday of each month and all your representatives would be pleased to hear from you if you need our help or wish to tell us something. Charles Dumpleton (Parish Council Chairman) Happy New Year to all readers! As always, thank you to everyone who contributed to this issue. I would also like to say Thank You for your enormous generosity of donations in lieu of presents to the Devon Air Ambulance which has amounted to £620 and which I am sure you will agree they will be grateful for as this is a much needed service in our area. A total of £450 was raised. The committee presented a banner, which was specially commissioned for the reunion, but can be used by the School to promote it at any future events; a photo on canvass showing the pupils holding the celebratory mugs; two boxes of K-nex educational construction toys and a wooden bench with a plaque which is to become a permanent fixture on School grounds. The teachers Mrs Barnett and Mrs Neal, along with the pupils, were delighted to receive the gifts on behalf of the School. Don’t forget that celebratory mugs, limited edition and only £4.50 each are still available from Highampton Shop and the School. All profits made from the sale of the mugs will be donated to the School. The reunion guest book and a scrap book of old school photos will be donated to Highampton Local History Group at its meeting to be held in February. However, the idea took off and here we 14 Fore Street Okehampton are in 2011 booked up with the Halwill Parish Hall Previously Trudy’s Hair Studio Sheepwash for a further 11 months. Our first date this year is 12th February. The market is held on the second Saturday of each month from 10.00am to noon, with a variety of stalls including, meat, vegetables, cheese, plants, crafts and charity stalls. We owe a big Thank You to the stall holders who have supported us over the months, some of them from the very beginning. It is an enjoyable morning where people can get together for a cuppa and a chat and also find that special “something” they T C M Plumbing have been looking for. Burst pipes? Taps dripping? Our thanks go to our secretary Mrs Mo Morel for organising the evening. The New Year marks a new start for the Group, with our meetings being moved to the fourth Wednesday of each month, with our first meeting of the year being held in the Village Hall on January 26th. Our speaker, on this occasion, will be Mr Brian Abell who will give an illustrated talk on his home town of Hatherleigh. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and all are welcome. Since the last gathering of the HLHG, our members have been privileged to acquire the very last signed copy of Rev Gerry Matthews book, Black Torrington, The Second Millennium. This hard back copy will make an invaluable addition to our archives. We have learnt that local historian Gerry Matthews is presently busy writing a similar book on the history of the neighbouring village of Bradford, which, hopefully, will be published later this year.
