In carving their new community from the wilderness, the Dutch settlers were sustained by a love of liberty and devotion to God that set the guidelines for their new institution. This Pioneer School evolved into the Holland Academy, which in 1862 enrolled its first college class. On May 14, 1866, the institution was chartered as Hope College, and on July 17, 1866, the first class of eight students graduated. Today Hope is a distinguished and distinctive four-year, liberal arts, undergraduate college, affiliated with the Reformed Church in America. Its great religious heritage is expressed through a dynamic Christian community of students and teachers vitally concerned with a relevant faith that changes lives and transforms society. The curriculum offers a variety of courses in 89 majors leading to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The college has long been known for outstanding pre-professional training. Each year many graduates go on to further study in the leading graduate and professional schools in this country and abroad; others directly enter professions. Hope College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission a commission of the North Central Association, 30 North LaSalle St., Suite 2400, Chicago, IL 60602, (800-621-7440). Hope has professional accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, the American Chemical Society, the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the Council on Social Work Education, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the National Association of Schools of Dance, the National Association of Schools of Music, and the National Association of Schools of Theatre. Hope Colleges teacher education programs are approved by the Michigan Department of Education, and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) recognizes the colleges department of education as a nationally accredited program. Hope is a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and fields varsity teams for men and women in 20 sports, and has an active intramural program. 3 HOPES REASON

    Oceana County Historic Resource Survey 198 Oceana Drive, Rothbury New England Barn & Queen Anne Residence Hart-Montague Trail, Rothbury The trail is twenty-two miles of the former rail bed of the Pere Marquette Railroad. It was made a state park in 1988. The railroad parallels much of the West Michigan Pike route but is most visible between Whitehall and Shelby. New Era New Era was found in 1878 by a group of Dutch that had been living in Montague serving as mill hands. They wanted to return to an agrarian lifestyle and purchased farms and planted peach orchards. In 1947, there were eighty-five Dutch families in New Era. 4856 Oceana, New Era New Era Canning Company The New Era Canning Company was established in 1910 by Edward P. Ray, a Norwegian immigrant who purchased a fruit farm in New Era. Ray grew raspberries, a delicate fruit that is difficult to transport in hot weather. Today, the plant is still owned by the Ray family and processes green beans, apples, and asparagus. New Era is characterized by a number of vernacular concrete block buildings. Prior to 1900, concrete was not a common building material for residential or commercial structures. Experimentation, testing and the development of standards for cement and additives in the late 19th century, led to the use of concrete a strong reliable building material after the turn of the century. Concrete was also considered to be fireproof, an important consideration as many communities suffered devastating fires that burned blocks of their wooden buildings Oceana County Historic Resource Survey 200 in the late nineteenth century.

The Eastland Disaster remains the greatest loss-of-life tragedy on the Great Lakes. Using museum exhibits, government documents, trial transcripts, period newspapers, oral interviews, images, ephemera, and popular culture materials, this study examines the century after the disaster in terms of the place the Eastland has held in regional and national public memory. For much of that period, the public memory of the tragedy had been lost, but private memories survived through storytelling within the families of survivors, rescuers, and victims.

    Stewarding Michigan’s Treasures: Connecting to Collections Survey Results from Michigan’s Collecting Institutions A Report by Michigan Museums Association April 2012 Made possible through the generous support of: Executive Summary Connecting to Collections Survey Michigan Museums Association (MMA) spearheaded this state-wide survey of Michigan’s 1,513 collecting institutions, querying them regarding the state of the documentation, accessibility, and care of artifacts and documents held in trust. Surveys were sent to libraries and archives (which primarily collect books and paper documents) and art, science and history museums, aquaria, botanical gardens, historic sites, zoos, and genealogical and historical societies (which primarily collect three-dimensional artifacts or specimens). The survey responses will inform MMA and its partners as they develop resources that will support institutions in their move toward best practice in collections management and care. 458 institutions institutions responded to the survey, resulting in about a 30% return rate. The surveys revealed these institutions’ hard work and dedication but also pinpointed challenges: Michigan has many small institutions with significant staff and funding constraints. Nearly 20% have budgets of less than $10,000 and 30% have no full-time professional staff. Thus, MMA and partners must provide affordable training and economical suggestions for implementation of best practices in collections management and care. The responding institutions hold at least 40 million artifacts and about 90,000 linear (shelf) feet of historical documents in trust for the people of this state. The majority of institutions provide primary access to their collections through site visits. Researchers who seek images and additional information may not get these from a visit.

The museum’s Mezzanine Gallery is hosting an exhibit entitled “The United States Coast Guard: 200 Years of History and Service” and features information on both the service’s national history, and its past and present ships and stations in Door County. In conjunction with that exhibit, works by Coast Guard artist Charles William Johnson are on display at the Maritime Museum. In addition, the museum recently replaced a model of the steamer South America, which was on loan from the Chicago Maritime Society, with a newly-built model of the ship by Larry and Bill Herbst. The Museum’s Board of Directors also recently announced a new campaign to raise $375,000 to payoff the debt remaining from construction of the museum’s new Sturgeon Bay Information on Great Lakes vessels, such as the U.S.C.G.C.
