Coaching Articles : Eric Musselman File For Coaches Jackson makes Hall of Fame on principle By Roscoe Nance, USA TODAY Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson heads the 2007 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class, which will be inducted Saturday in Springfield, Mass. The group includes University of North Carolina men's coach Roy Williams, Louisiana State University women's coach Van Chancellor, the 1966 Texas Western University men's team, referee Marvin "Mendy" Rudolph and international coaches Pedro Ferrandiz of Spain and Mirko Novosel of Yugoslavia. Jackson, 61, has won nine NBA championships as a coach — six with the Chicago Bulls and three with the Lakers — tying Hall of Famer Red Auerbach's record. He has coached some of the NBA's greatest players, including Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen with the Bulls and Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal with the Lakers. Jackson gets players to buy into his coaching philosophy, which is influenced by Native American and Eastern beliefs. "The great thing about Phil is the way he has handled players," Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said. "He has a different style, too, that old Zen thing. I love him because he never gets too high and never gets too low and always wants to help the guys grow as men. He teaches them basketball and also teaches them outside the sport." One of his more renowned strategies is handing out books for players to read during road trips. "He's trying to get players to see that there's more to life than the NBA and your performance today," said NBA TV analyst Steve "Snapper" Jones.

  • Enigmatic’ Best Definition of 1980S Decade for Sox
‘Enigmatic’ best definition of 1980s decade for Sox By Mark Liptak Posted Tuesday, September 24th, 2013 (This is the first in a series of historic themes involving the Chicago White Sox. The theme will change each time in order to give you the broadest range of some of the finest moments over the past 70-plus years. It is our hope that fans, regardless of age, will get a new appre- ciation of the great players, great moments and great memories that the Sox have brought to generations of Chicagoans.) The 1980s saw the White Sox franchise transi- tion from the way things used to be to new frontiers and opportunities. New ownership, a new stadium and a new philosophy took hold at various times and ultimately advanced the organization. But like all progress it came at a cost. It was measured in the destruction of the original Comiskey Park, in the letting go of a beloved (to say nothing of one of the best) GM and in a threat that alienated, for a period of time, a loyal fan base. We’re going to look back at the “Enigmatic ‘80s” in four parts; this first part Carlton Fisk hitting against the Cubs in an will look at what happened on the field and in exhibition game at Wrigley Field in 1981. Fisk's arrival just before the '81 season was the organization focusing on the 1981 and the big spark for the new Sox era. 1982 seasons. The ‘80s represented another “split personality” decade for the Sox. Like the ‘60s and 70’s, the Sox started out pretty well only to be in complete disarray by the end of it -- in fact the Sox almost moved to St.

Media Contact: Kelvin Ang [email protected], 315-450-1420 The 2011 Racial and Gender Report Card: Major League Baseball By Richard Lapchick with Christina Cloud, Aaron Gearlds, Tavia Record, Elizabeth Schulz, Jake Spiak and Matthew Vinson published April 21, 2011 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Orlando, FL – April 21, 2011…Major League Baseball continues to demonstrate an outstanding record on the issue of racial and gender hiring practices. However, after steady improvement in both areas for several years, this year there were decreases in the percentages of people of color and women in several categories. Overall, baseball received an A for race and a B- for gender in the 2011 Report Card. The Racial and Gender Report Card annually asks, “Are we playing fair when it comes to sports? Does everyone, regardless of race or gender, have a chance at bat or to operate a team?” Baseball’s grade for race dipped slightly from 92.5 to 91.6, while its grade for gender dropped from 82 to 79.3. Baseball’s overall score for the 2011 Report Card is 85.5, which is lower than the 2010 score of 87.3 that was MLB’s best-ever combined score. MLB’s combined grade for 2011 is a B+. Richard Lapchick, principal author of the study and director of The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) at the University of Central Florida, said, “Bud Selig has helped make MLB’s central and team front offices look more like America. “Jackie Robinson’s dream was to see more African-Americans playing, coaching and in the front office.
