Hooker Photographs by Chris Gardiner SCHOOL OF MARINE and TROPICAL BIOLOGY JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY TOWNSVILLE QUEENSLAND James Cook University 2012 GRASSES OF THE TOWNSVILLE AREA Welcome to the grasses of the Townsville area. The genera covered in this treatment are those found in the lowland areas around Townsville as far north as Bluewater, south to Alligator Creek and west to the base of Hervey’s Range. Most of these genera will also be found in neighbouring areas although some genera not included may occur in specific habitats. The aim of this book is to provide a description of the grass genera as well as a list of species. The grasses belong to a very widespread and large family called the Poaceae. The original family name Gramineae is used in some publications, in Australia the preferred family name is Poaceae. It is one of the largest flowering plant families of the world, comprising more than 700 genera, and more than 10,000 species. In Australia there are over 1300 species including non-native grasses. In the Townsville area there are more than 220 grass species. The grasses have highly modified flowers arranged in a variety of ways. Because they are highly modified and specialized, there are also many new terms used to describe the various features. Hence there is a lot of terminology that chiefly applies to grasses, but some terms are used also in the sedge family. The basic unit of the grass inflorescence (The flowering part) is the spikelet. The spikelet consists of 1-2 basal glumes (bracts at the base) that subtend 1-many florets or flowers. -

These were potted in a mixture of one part each of clayey loam soil, coarse sand and black earex peat. These plants were watered regularly and fertilized with Vigoro (at fortnightly intervals) from September through April, and -Ner ' . A Fig. 3. ,\arctssits vindillortis. The top of this same inflorescence is shown in natural size to the right. were kept entirely dry in the pot from May through August. The plants did not flower during the first two years but one bulb flowered in the fall of the third year as shown in Fig. 3. The following year all three bulbs flowered. The flowers are entirely green and give off a delightful frag- rance that can be detected over a wide area. It is a very charming sub- ject which should be more widely cultivated. In the Southwest, par- II:ERBERTIA EDITION [33 tieularly in California, the species thrives out of doors and blooms mularly in the fall. Unfortunately, sufficient stock is not as yet avail- able_ but it is hoped that before long this deficiency will be corrected by the commercial growers. It may be that this species can be used in breeding experiments. Such attempts will be started by the writer during the season 1953-1954. This may not be an easy project but is surely worth trying. -

Sus centros de diversificación se localizan en México y la parte andina de Sudamérica. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue analizar la riqueza y distribución de Tigridieae en Norteamérica. Para ello, se utilizó una base de datos con 2,769 registros georreferenciados. Mediante sistemas de información geográfica (SIG) se analizó la riqueza deTigridieae por división política, ecorregión y una cuadrícula de 45×45 km. Tigridieae está representada por 66 especies y 7 subespecies. De estas, 54 especies y 7 subespecies son endémicas. Tigridia es el género más diverso con 43 especies y 6 subespecies. La riqueza de taxa se concentra en México en los estados de Oaxaca, México y Jalisco. -

"! ! Abstract Transposable elements are mobile genetic elements that have the ability to replicate and relocate to different positions in the genome of a cell. These elements are ubiquitous in the genomes of all eukaryotic organisms and are credited with being the source of the vast variation in genome size among related organisms, such as angiosperms, which can differ in genome size by as much as 1000-fold. Retroelements in particular are very predominant in angiosperms and have been shown to account for anywhere from 30% to 90% of the genome. The massive genomes that are common in the Liliaceae family (mean C value of 50 pg) are extreme examples of retroelement proliferation. The Family Liliaceae provides a good model system for studying the mechanisms utilized by transposable elements to proliferate and evade host defenses, and for studying the impact transposable elements have on the evolution of genomes. However, due to their large genome size and the vast prevalence of repetitive DNA, members of the Liliaceae have not yet been fully sequenced nor have their transposable elements been fully characterized. In addition, there has been no attempt to isolate and characterize active retroelements from Liliaceae species in the form of virus-like particles. This thesis research will utilize and modify existing virus-like particle isolation techniques for retroelement isolation and characterization using barley as a model plant. -

Various methods in tissue culture and molecular breeding have been applied to the production of commercially important lily species and cultivars. However, scientific research data of such species and varieties that have potential in the northern climate is scarce. In this work, different biotechnological methods were developed and used in the production and culture of a diversity of lily species belonging to different taxonomic groups. The aim was to test and develop further the existing methods in plant biotechnology for the developmental work and the production of novel hardy lily cultivars for northern climates.
