President's Message May 2018

Winter … Is It Really Over?

Hopefully by now members have had a chance to get their cars out once or twice. Weather has not been great. It has run the gambit, sun, snow, sleet, rain. I’m going out on a limb to say that snow/winter is behind us and it is time for members to get their Corvettes out. Time to rediscover the fine lines of the fiberglass, contours of the seat as you settle in, hands caressing the steering wheel and shift, turn the key, and she comes to life, ready to respond to your every command! The month of May should be full of Corvette fun for members and I ask that you join us when you can. I Look forward to meeting new and old friends! Steve “GDTOGO” Wilson, EMCC President

A FEW WORDS FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT By "SMOKEN" Mal Smith I am pleased to see sunshine and I am passing it along to everyone. Let's get out and enjoy our "TOYS". I hope to see you soon at a Tuesday night static cruise. Last month I mentioned to you that the Classy Corvette Cougars are getting together again and we invite all of the women of the club and their friends to join in on any of the CCC events. Nine Cougars went to Molly's Apothecary on April 12th and made soaps, body lotion and body scrub. We brought wine and snacks and had a delightful night of laughs. Jean Kirkham sponsored the event about 4 years back and sponsored it again this year. Thanks so much Jean. Great night!!!

Cathy Wesalowski is working on our next event which will be a night at the Reflexology Spa in Waltham. There are already Cougars waiting for this event. More info to come.

I had the pleasure of communicating with Jim McMackin this past week. He is loving his Tesla and Mary is waiting for hers. They keep busy babysitting their grandchildren five days a week. Jim is planning to meet up with us at a Bass Pro night to catch up on news. We will be seeing him soon.

SMOKEN is out of it's stall...... see you all soon.

THOUGHTS TIME TO START CRUSING Story by Arne Johnson

Finally we are entering a time of warmer weather which will enable the start of some serious cruising. Usually we see Pinch’s Wash & Shine as the initiating event to kick the season off. This year will be no different as the Wash & Shine returns to Pinch’s Business site on Rt.109 in Millis. I know we are all glad to be returning to this site following our good friend Pinch’s period of illness last season. The very next day, May 6, will be at the Car Show at Mass Bay Community College Automotive Tech training site in Ashland. This is a great show of about 200 cars and one that has been a winner for EMCC members Jack Kirkham and Bob Grenier. Not only have their cars won awards at this show but photographs of their cars have appeared on the annual flier announcing the show. Jack’s is on this year. My car has not won or appeared on any flyers but I have won many friends who have shown a variety of cars and trucks each year. My Vette is still in the garage and on the battery tender but cleaning supplies have been ordered on line from Girot’s Garage and by next week we will be back on the road and planning for a season of shows once again. See you on the road soon.

HERE WE GO ... IT'S BASS PRO Story & Photos by Keith E. Jacobson

On Thursday, April 12th, the car season finally kicked off with the first Mass Cruisers/Bass Pro event of 2018. It was a little chilly with a threat of possible showers and that probably kept the crowd down. EMCC was well represented by a happy if cold crew. At times the wind was so brisk that the flags on a military truck were blowing straight out. The season is here and if you have never been to the show at Patriot Place in Foxboro ... make this the year. It'svery other Thursday (check the schedule) and they request a can of food donation for local food banks .

When we got to our destination we had five corvettes. No rain or snow, but the roads were wet in places and sandy by the reservoir in Cumberland, R.I. . It was still good to get out and drive. Joe O’Connor, Steve Sylvia, Paul Worsley, and Jim Lee. When we got to the ice cream machine, Mike Pansuik was waiting for us. The ice cream was good and expensive. I must be getting old. The trip was a good excuse to get out and drive our Corvettes. Many more good times to follow. SHOWEM, SHINEUM, AND USEUM.

On Saturday, April 21, the 9th annual open house/dyno day was held at SLOWHAWK PERFORMANCE in Bridgewater. Cars went on the dyno at $65.00 for two to three runs. There were lots of spectators and plenty of Vettes. It was a sunny and mild day which is always good for great turnout. Burgers, dogs, soft drinks, and chips were served ... something that made a nice day even nicer. Think about attending this event next year. DRIVING MISS DAFFODIL Story & Photos by Keith E. Jacobson

What a great way to celebrate Earth Day on Sunday, April 22, a car rally in Newport, R.I. . The Audrain Automobile Museum crew lead a car parade through downtown Newport, along Ocean Drive, and back along mansion row, Bellevue Avenue. The tour took approximately one hour and was escorted by the Newport Police Department. Museum staff said that over 80 cars registered for the free event. This was part of the 5th Annual Newport Daffodil Days Festival. There were many interesting cars participating including a beautifully restored Aston Martin that was a duplicate for the one used in the movie "The Birds" ... it was sporting a "show" license plate that was the same as the one used in the movie. The sunny and mild day made for a great event. ******************************************************* TIME TO RENEW YOUR LICENSE Story by Bob Gardner While we were all focused on the Registry’s changes regarding inspections, another major change was creeping up on us. Now it’s here and it will affect us all in one way or another. The change is to renewal of your driver’s license and it’s gonna send you scrambling to your safety deposit box or maybe the sock drawer. By late 2020, maybe two years from now, driver’s licenses as we’ve known them all our lives will have to change per regulations that grew out of 9/11. Your license won’t get you on a plane or into the Social Security Office. You’ll need a new one. Beginning March 26, the so-called Real ID’s, created by post 9/11 security law, will require Massachusetts drivers to go IN PERSON to a Registry Office when their licenses expire. And you’ll have to bring a fist-full of documents with you! You’ll have to prove who you are and that you are in the United States legally. If you want to walk out with one of the new Real ID licenses you’ll need your original (or duplicate) Social Security Card that shows a valid Social Security Number. Or you could substitute a recent W-2 from work. Some of you are still working, right? Then, to prove your US Citizenship, you’ll need either a current passport or a certified copy of your birth certificate. Remember where that stuff is?? Lastly, you’ll two (2) more documents to prove you reside in Massachusetts. These might be utility bills, bank statements, or even a renewal notice from the DMV. Obtaining these records isn’t tough but showing up at the Registry minus one or another sends you back to the end of the line. And there WILL be a line.

You may decide to forgo the Real ID license. Maybe you have a valid US Passport already and use that when you fly. The benefit of this is you can still renew on line with the Registry. But be sure to keep that passport with you and keep it current. The Commonwealth has set up offices to work with felons, the homeless, and domestic violence victims to get them licensed. Note there’s no office for the elderly and that’s some (most) of us. I’ve LOST more documents that most of these youngsters have possessed in their lifetimes. I have NO idea where my original Social Security Card is. We do have passports and you can betcha we’ll be making sure they’re renewed before they expire in the safety deposit box. How did this all come about? In 2005, Congress passed a law saying that state issued driver’s licenses would no longer be acceptable for purposes such as boarding a domestic flight unless they complied with new federal requirements. Those included increased verification of a person’s identity, citizenship, and residency. After years of extensions and delays, time is running out in Massachusetts. Residents here won’t be able to board a flight after October, 2020 using a traditional state ID. So we are joining more than two dozen other states in compliance with the regulations. We will have a state ID that is in accordance with federal regulations. Welcome Aboard. #################### EMCC MEMBERS AT THE MARATHON Story & Photos by Bruce Kolovson

The EMCC was well represented as part of a volunteer program at this years 122nd running of the Boston Marathon on Patriot's Day, Monday, April 16. Under the leadership of EMCC's Judy Pitasi EMCC members volunteered to be part of a team collecting donated and discarded clothing at the Boston Marathon's start area in Hopkington. Many athletes wear items to keep warm and as the race starts they discard them. Items collected were picked up by the Big Brother Big Sister orginization. In spite of challenging weather conditions...spirits remained high among runners and volunteers. Personally, it was my first experience volunteering at the Boston Marathon. I'll definitelybe back.
