  • Bulgaria Political Turmoil Likely to Have Small Long-Term Impact on the Course of the Economy
12 October 2020 Macro Research EEMEA Country Note Bulgaria Political turmoil likely to have small long-term impact on the course of the economy ■ Protests have caused a significant shift in support for the main parties. ■ Under the most likely scenario, GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) will remain the largest party in the next parliament. However, we expect the BSP (Bulgarian Socialist Party) to form the next coalition government. ■ The BSP is likely to remove the flat personal income tax and increase pensions. This will support economic growth, as those at the bottom of income distribution will benefit most. ■ Timely completion of large infrastructure projects and tax collections are risks worth watching if the BSP forms the next coalition government. ■ A smooth absorption of the EU’s anti-crisis funding would be crucial to ensure a strong and fast economic recovery. ■ Irrespective of who wins the next election, Bulgaria is likely to end up pushing for more progress in fighting corruption and reforming the judiciary. Although losing much of its momentum, protests against the government of Mr. Boyko Borisov continue. Mr. Borisov is prime mister of the Republic of Bulgaria and the leader of GERB, Bulgaria’s largest parliamentary party. The protestors continue to demand the resignation of both the prime minister and the chief prosecutor, Ivan Geshev, and the switch to an electronic voting system. They have no other specific demands. The protestors have failed to articulate any alternative vision for the country’s governance and socio- and economic development. President Rumen Radev, who was elected on the ticket of the BSP, has emerged as the main protagonist of the protests.

  • Banking Outlook: CEE Region – the Place to Be
Banking Outlook: CEE region – the place to be Carlo Vivaldi – Head of CEE Division, UniCredit UniCredit SpA - Public Mauro Giorgio Marrano – Strategy and Corporate Foresight Coordinator for CEE, UniCredit 2017 EBRD Annual Meeting (Cyprus – May 9th) AGENDA 1 PART1 CEE Banking outlook – Mauro Giorgio Marrano 1.1 Macroeconomic environment 1.2 Banking sector developments 1.3 Banking Outlook 2 PART 2 UniCredit in the region: further strengthen our leadership – Carlo Vivaldi UniCredit – Public EXECUTIVE SUMMARY . The economic environment in which banks operate in CEE(1) is overall positive. In 2017, for the first time since the 2008-2009 crisis, GDP is expected to grow in all countries, with solid growth rates in most countries (3% or above). The banking sector was profitable(2) in all CEE countries in 2016, with CEE as a whole performing better than Western Europe(3). It was the first year since the 2008-2009 crisis that the sector recorded profits in all countries, although level of profitability varies within the region. Some of the vulnerabilities of the past are being addressed, putting the banking sectors of the region on a sounder footing: 1) A more sustainable funding model; 2) A lower share of FX lending in retail; 3) An ongoing improvement of asset quality. These developments represent a good basis for a relatively positive outlook. In the next two years, almost all countries are expected to experience growth in lending with the laggards picking up. NPL ratios are expected to decline further and profitability will remain above Western Europe(3) . Digital banking is expected to play an important role in the region.

  • Oktoberfest 2015: Beer Price Inflation?
16 September 2015 Economics & FI/FX Research Economics Special Oktoberfest 2015: Beer price inflation? It’s that time of year again. The Oktoberfest or “Wiesn” (the Bavarian abbreviation for its location, the Theresienwiese) will open its doors to the public on Saturday 19 September for the 182nd time. Its origins date back to the beginning of the 19th century to celebrate the marriage of Bavaria’s Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen (for more on the history of the Oktoberfest see box in the appendix). Compared to other popular events around the world, the Oktoberfest takes one of the top spots. With the participation of 6.3mn visitors in 2014 (chart 1), it ranges between mega events like the 2012 Summer Olympics in London with 8.2mn visitors and the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil with about 3.4mn visitors. The 2014 carnival in Rio drew around 920,000 visitors. CHART 1: OKTOBERFEST VISITORS 8.0 Visitors (mil) 7.0 6.0 5.0 4.0 3.0 2.0 1.0 0.0 1985 1989 1993 1997 2001 2005 2009 2013 Source: City of Munich, UniCredit Research The number of visitors to last year’s Oktoberfest declined by 100,000 from 6.4mn in 2013. This is still below the most recent peak in 2011 with 6.9mn visitors. However, 2011 was a year in which the “Oide Wiesn” took place. The Oide Wiesn opened for the first time in 2010 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Oktoberfest and provides visitors with nostalgic beer tents and folk festival attractions.
