The EU has 24 official languages and 3 alphabets, some of them with a worldwide coverage. Some 60 other languages are also part of the EU's heritage and spoken in specific regions or by certain groups. Language competences are at the heart of the ambitious vision to develop a well-functioning European Education Area. Being able to speak different languages is necessary for studying and working abroad. What is more, learning languages enables people to discover different cultures and to broaden their perspectives. In May 2019, the Council of the European Union adopted a Recommendation for a comprehensive approach to language teaching and learning. The European Union and its Member States are committed to increasing the level of ambition for language learning in school. This includes literacy in the language(s) of schooling as well as the acquisition of two additional languages. -
