Redefining Ghanaian Highlife Music in Modern Times
American Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences Research (AJHSSR) 2020 American Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences Research (AJHSSR) e-ISSN :2378-703X Volume-4, Issue-1, pp-18-29 www.ajhssr.com Research Paper Open Access Redefining Ghanaian Highlife Music in Modern Times Mark Millas Coffie (Department of Music Education/ University of Education, Winneba, Ghana) ABSTRACT: Highlife, Ghana's first and foremost acculturated popular dance music has been overstretched by practitioners and patrons to the extent that, presently, it is almost impossible to identify one distinctive trait in most of the modern-day recorded songs categorised as highlife. This paper examines the distinctive character traits of Ghana's highlife music, and also stimulates a discourse towards its redefinition for easy recognition and a better understanding in modern times. Employing document review, audio review, interviews, and descriptive analysis, the paper reveals that the instrumental structure, such as percussion, guitar, bass, and keyboard patterns, is key in categorising highlife songs. The paper, however, argues that categorising modern-day recorded highlife songs based on timeline rhythms and drum patterns alone can be confusing and deceptive. The paper, therefore, concludes that indigenous guitar styles such as the mainline, yaa amponsah, dagomba, sikyi, kwaw, ᴐdᴐnson among others should be the chief criterion in recognising and categorising modern-day recorded highlife songs. 2017 The 2016 Annual Ghana Social Media Report A RANKINGS REPORT ON THE MOST INFLUENTIAL BRANDS AND PERSONALITIES ON SOCIAL MEDIA IN GHANA A PROJECT BY CLIQAFRICA LIMITED AND AVANCE MEDIA WWW.CLIQAFRICA.COM/GSMR GSMR 2016 CLIQAFRICA |AVANCE MEDIA INTRODUCTION With the growing dynamism in the global digital space, digital trends in 2016 show an increased sophistication of our social world and increased connectivity of human online activities specifically on social media. The year 2016 also witnessed several online controversies and events both globally and locally such as the #Brexit trend to various elections conversations, notable among them were the 2016 US Election, the 2016 Ghana elections and the Gambian Elections which occurrences happened almost concurrently and sparked an unending social revolution and brand advocacy. Social Media shaped how these controversies spurred generally with more online or digital platforms as well as brands focusing on media sharing on social media communities for traffic generation rather than employing any other network to reach out to audience. We also saw a global changing trend in content delivery and consumption as well as changing behavioral patterns of users and audience on these social networks. Social media measurement and monitoring thus became one of the most important features for most brands, organizations and businesses in their urge to guide their implementation of social campaigns and shape their online brand voice. In Ghana, various forecast and predictions were made notably by brands, personalities, organizations and civil society groups which spiraled these controversies to the extent of a proposed censorship of social media during the 2016 general elections as seen in other countries during periods of escalated controversies. -

The purpose of this research was to offer an analysis of the hiplife movement in Ghana as a contributor to youth empowerment applying new forms of entertainment strategies, artist management, and technology enhancement that could broaden the awareness of hiplife and create economic opportunities for artists. This thesis also discussed the event management company, The Afro Giants (tAG), which was created to groom, manage, record musicians, and produce shows around the world. It will also attempt to answer the questions: What is popular music in Ghana? What is the cultural form of popular music in Ghana? What is the cultural environment impacted upon by popular music discourses? How can we study popular music in Ghana as an authentic field of media and communication? What is the functionality/dysfunctionality of popular music discourses in the contemporary Ghanaian socio-musical cultural space? It is also the thesis of this paper to look at popular music as a historical and social construct. The stance of this paper is that it is possible to analyse socio-cultural change, fathom new psycho-social perceptions by a holistic study of popular music. The popular music space is, further, set off as the locus where the systemic world meets the life world for meaning and communication. This paper is informed by the notion that popular music consumption is not an obscure enterprise directed entirely to an exclusively esoteric audience with padded layers of sub-cultures.
