  • Archetypal Astrology and Transpersonal Psychology: the Research of Richard Tarnas and Stanislav Grof Renn Butler
Archetypal Astrology and Transpersonal Psychology: The Research of Richard Tarnas and Stanislav Grof Renn Butler In the mid-1960’s, a young Czechoslovakian psychiatrist working at the Psychiatric Research Institute in Prague made some epoch-making discoveries concerning the fundamental structures of the human psyche. Working with a wide range of individuals involved in supervised LSD psychotherapy, Stanislav Grof and his clients encountered experiences that gradually and then irrevocably challenged the orthodox Freudian model in which he and his colleagues were working. The content of the sessions suggested a far deeper understanding of the human psyche and the cosmos itself than had been previously imagined. After supervising 3,000 LSD sessions and studying the records of another 2,000, Grof eventually systematized a far- reaching model that accounted for the observations of his client’s sessions, integrated the diversity of competing psychological theories, and reached into areas of human spirituality described by the great spiritual traditions of the world. Stanislav Grof’s Expanded Cartography of the Human Psyche In 1976, Grof and his partner Christina developed a comparable non-drug technique for entering non-ordinary states of consciousness, which they called Holotropic Breathwork™ (from holos=“wholeness”; and trepein=“moving toward”). Throughout his long career of more than fifty-five years of research using powerful drug and non-drug catalysts, Grof discovered that individuals who enter holotropic states of consciousness have access to three broad layers of experience. The first layer is referred to as the biographical. This layer contains most of the material known from conventional psychotherapy. Individuals confront traumas and conflicts left over from physical and sexual abuse, a hostile family atmosphere, sibling rivalry, or severe toilet training.

  • Archetypal Cosmology by Richard Tarnas
Archetypal Cosmology: A Brief Account Richard Tarnas With a recent issue devoted to matters archetypal, I was asked by the editors of The Mountain Astrologer and a number of its readers to consider writing a brief overview of the history of archetypal cosmology. So in this essay I would like to describe, first, the key individuals and influences that brought forth the academic discipline and philosophical perspective called archetypal cosmology; then its longer ancestry, the centuries-old traditions out of which it emerged; and finally a short summary of the basic principles that distinguish it as an approach to astrology. It could be argued that the emergence of archetypal cosmology was in some sense inevitable, as scholars and researchers working in late twentieth-century academia recognized the larger implications of the evidence for planetary correlations with the patterns of human experience. Given the extraordinary nature of these correlations, the obvious task was to pursue the research in a more systematic way, think deeply about the resulting evidence, then integrate this with the relevant ideas and conceptual frameworks from both the past, like the Platonic-Pythagorean tradition or Kepler’s work, and the cutting-edge present, from depth psychology to the new-paradigm sciences. But if perhaps inevitable in principle, the specific character and even the naming of archetypal cosmology reflects its emergence from a unique convergence of scholars and intellectual currents at two particular learning communities, Esalen Institute during the 1970s and 1980s, and the California Institute of Integral Studies from the 1990s to the present. Out of that creative commingling of people and ideas arose a distinctive vision of psyche and cosmos, of the human being’s co-creative participation in an ensouled, evolving universe.

  • World Transits 2000-2020
World Transits 2000–2020 An Overview Richard Tarnas There are few frames of reference more illuminating of individual and collective archetypal dynamics and psychological conditions than an archetypally informed knowledge of current planetary positions. In the following pages I would like to set out an overview of the major world transits of the outer planets that I believe are most relevant for understanding our current historical moment. In particular, I want to review both the most significant longer-term planetary alignments leading up to this era and, more recent, those that have unfolded since Cosmos and Psyche was completed five years ago, in 2005. On that basis, we can deepen and extend that book’s brief anticipatory analysis of the extraordinary convergence of planetary configurations of the 2008–12 period. This article is therefore continuous with the chapter “Observations on Future Planetary Alignments,” from the final section of Cosmos and Psyche.1 The Outer-Planet Conjunction Series: The Presence of the Past If we can, for a moment, adjust our archetypal telescope and zoom out to a wide-angle historical perspective, we can see that our moment in history is taking place in the aftermath of three great conjunctions involving the three intersecting cycles of the outer planets Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto—the “ambassadors of the galaxy,” as Dane Rudhyar evocatively described them. We are, of course, living in a time when new celestial bodies at the outskirts of our solar system are being discovered at World Transits 2000–2020 a rapid pace, as are extrasolar planets in other systems.

We are witnessing the decline and dissolution of the old order, the tumult and uncertainty of a new birth. Against this background, there is an urgent need for a coherent framework of meaning to lead us beyond the growing fragmentation of culture, belief and personal identity.Keiron Le Grice argues that the developing insights of a new cosmology could provide this framework, helping us to discover an underlying order shaping our life experiences. In a compelling synthesis of the ideas of seminal thinkers from depth psychology and the new paradigm sciences, Le Grice positions the new discipline of archetypal astrology at the centre of an emerging world view that reunifies psyche and cosmos, spirituality and science, mythology and metaphysics, and enables us to see mythic gods, heroes and themes in a fresh light. He draws especially on the work of C. G. Jung, Joseph Campbell, Richard Tarnas, Fritjof Capra, David Bohm and Brian Swimme.Heralding a 'rediscovery of the gods' and the passage into a new spiritual era, The Archetypal Cosmos presents a new understanding of the role of myth and archetypal principles in our lives, one that could give a cosmic perspective and deeper meaning to our personal experiences.

  • Review of the Passion of the Western Mind
Review of The Passion of the Western Mind By Michael W. Kelley The Passion of the Western Mind: Understanding the Ideas That Have Shaped Our World View, by Richard Tarnas (New York: Ballatine Books, 1991) 544 pages, notes, bibliography, index. Contra Mundum, No. 10, Winter 1994 Copyright 1994 Michael W. Kelley We are perhaps not a little amazed that a book which explores the main philosophical and intellectual currents of Western man could not only be published but could even become a major best-seller. We were certainly surprised at the remarkable success of Allen Bloom's The Closing of The American Mind. After all, who today would have any interest in reading about Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes, Kant, and so on? Professors in academies, maybe, but not the reading public. Richard Tarnas, however, has not only produced a work which covers the principal thinkers and the effects of their ideas throughout Western history, but has done so with smashing success. For anyone who would be interested in what has gone on in Western history and who wishes to know something of what men in the past thought about themselves or their world and the way they have influenced the development of our civilization, Tarnas's accomplishment is bound to excite more than a little curiosity. Why should another book which discusses the role of Greek philosophers, medieval theologians, modern scientific pioneers, and, finally, contemporary existential and deconstructionist critical theorists awaken such widespread attention? The reason is that Tarnas's book is not just another boring treatise on the who's who of our historical past, nor one more dry and stale dialogue on what they believed and why we either pay them no mind or present them as dead curiosities for the sake of minimal academic necessity.

Through a unique integration of Science, Art and Spirit, The Tyringham Project might best be described as a ‘Mystery School for the New Renaissance’, becoming both the incubator and the propagator for the ideas that will enable humanity to confront the systemic challenges of the 21st century – from the environmental, social and political, to the economic and the spiritual. The Tyringham Project is still very much in its infancy and we would therefore, welcome any thoughts and input from the assembled, thereby helping to co-create and clearly articulate a vision for the future, ensuring that this event is just the first of many within an ongoing journey of ground-breaking inspiration. 4 OBJECTIVES OF THE SYMPOSIUM, DR DAVID LUKE DMT is a simple organic molecule present in an extremely wide range of animals and probably all plants, though curiously not fungus – which in true mycelial style has its own version; 4-HO-DMT. • Spiritual Epistemologies and Integral Cosmologies: Transforming Thinking and Culture
Spiritual Epistemologies and Integral Cosmologies: Transforming Thinking and Culture Jennifer Gidley The Stars spoke once to man It is World-destiny That they are silent now To be aware of the silence Can become pain for earthly man But in the deepening silence There grows and ripens What Man speaks to the Stars To be aware of the speaking Can become strength for Spirit Man Rudolf Steiner The culture of a people is intimately connected with their type of thinking and system of knowledge. In Western culture, universities have been the of- ficial guardians and transmitters of those systems of knowledge for the past 1,000 years or so. A crucial question to be addressed here is whether univer- sities have sufficient foresight today to spearhead essential changes in think- ing and culture, or whether they are merely “credentialing the status quo” (Wildman, 2000). The twentieth-century university model had its rightful place in the context of nineteenth-century industrial and social progress, and nineteenth-century Western linear rationality. Centuries of instrumental ra- tionality have led to an atrophying of imaginative vision and subsequent technologization of culture throughout Western society, but particularly within universities. They, in turn, have become obsessed with methodologi- cal issues and technical detail. The resultant disconnectedness from commu- nity and culture of much dry academic thinking today parallels a process of cultural degeneration and fragmentation. Looking at the conceptual trilogy of methodology, epistemology and on- tology as ideally representing a balance, we must recognize that contempo- rary universities have all but forsaken the latter two constructs.

  • Psychedelics and the Spiritual Path – Critical Voices and Considerations Dr Elliot Cohen, Leeds Beckett University
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Leeds Beckett Repository This is a pre-publication version of the following article: Psychedelics and the Spiritual Path – Critical voices and Considerations Dr Elliot Cohen, Leeds Beckett University ‘I undertake the training to abstain from intoxicants which cloud the mind’ (the Fifth Precept of Buddhism) This paper was originally presented as a presentation at of the British Psychological Society’s Transpersonal Psychology 19th annual conference - ‘Psychedelics, Psychology and Spirituality’. It was my intention, in the best spirit of academic debate and inquiry, to offer some critical perspectives and considerations related to the use of psychedelics in relation to the origins and development of Transpersonal Psychology. To this end I reflected on the work and lives of some influential counter culture figures including Albert Hofmann, Abraham Maslow, Ram Dass and others - each of whom raised particular concerns and doubts in relation to the potential risks associated with psychedelics, which I will argue still resonate today. Where appropriate I have also included some of the varied positions one might encounter in relation to spiritual traditions and psychedelics (specifically Buddhism, Judaism, Daoism and Hinduism). In his 2014 keynote address to the British Psychological Society’s Transpersonal Section, Professor Richard Tarnas proclaimed that were it not for LSD there wouldn’t have been any Transpersonal Psychology. This statement surprised me, as I had always accepted that psychedelics may have played a catalytic role in the formation of Humanistic and Transpersonal movements, but I hadn’t previously considered that they may have had a role to play in their very conception.
