Chinese folk literature is spread by educated folklorists and, on the opposite end of the spectrum, Chinese folk religion is the realm of the masses. Chinese literature was taken as an academic discipline in the early 1920s but its popularity was later diminished in academia because of the political ideology at the time. -

In Pursuit of the Great Peace: Han Dynasty Classicism and the Making of Early Medieval Literati Culture Abstract This dissertation is focused on communities of people in the Han dynasty (205 B.C.-A.D. 220) who possessed the knowledge of a corpus of texts: the Five Classics. Previously scholars have understood the popularity of this corpus in the Han society as a result of stiff ideology and imperial propaganda. However, this approach fails to explain why the imperial government considered them effective to convey propaganda in the first place. It does not capture the diverse range of ideas in classicism. This dissertation concentrates on Han classicists and treats them as scholars who constantly competed for attention in intellectual communities and solved problems with innovative solutions that were plausible to their contemporaries. This approach explains the nature of the apocryphal texts, which scholars have previously referred to as shallow and pseudo-scientific. -
A New Model in the Study of Chinese Mythology
Journal of chinese humanities 3 (���7) �-�� brill.com/joch A New Model in the Study of Chinese Mythology Liu Yuqing 劉毓慶 Professor of Literature, Shanxi University, China [email protected] Translated by Casey Lee Abstract Chinese mythology [shenhua 神話] does not exist independently as a cultural medium like mythology does in the West but, rather, comprises ideological and narrative forms that emerge according to historical and cultural trends. Not only have myths withstood humanity’s conquest of nature, but they have drawn and continue to draw on the mys- teries of scientific development for new content. It is possible to identify three high- points of creativity in the history of Chinese mythology, each corresponding to shifts in the function and nuance of myths. The first highpoint occurred very early on in China’s ancient history, in the period of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors [wudi san- wang 五帝三王], when myths were a way to articulate history—that is, history as myth. The second highpoint occurred in the period from the Qin through Jin dynasties, when mythology mainly expounded on philosophy and theory—that is, philosophy as myth. The third highpoint occurred during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, when the narrative content of mythology turned toward the religious—that is, religion as myth. The study of Chinese mythology dates back only to the broad dissemination of Western learning in early twentieth century China and, for most of the past century, has employed concepts, theories, clas- sifications, and research methods developed by Western scholars. -
An Analysis on Chinese and Greek Mythologies
AN ANALYSIS ON CHINESE AND GREEK MYTHOLOGIES ... PROMETHEUS, NÜWA AND GUN Yan Qiuxia Chinese and Greek mythologies, as many other mythologies in the world, are mixtures of history, legends, and myths. Although they both have been passed down in oral or written form and have developed over the ages, Greek mythology is much more organized because of The Theogony and The Works and Days by Hesiod1, while Chinese mythology is not so systematic and dispersed in a few books2, among which Shan Hai Jing3, Shui Jing Zhu4, and Huai Nan Zi5 are the important ones.6 Hei An Zhuan is also very important because it is the only collection of legends in epic form but it is not widely known because its value is not recognized until 1980s.7 So many Chinese myths exist in different versions, and often conflicting. Take the creation of the first human beings as an example. It is variously ascribed to Tiandi, Nüwa, Pangu, and Yuhuang in different stories. What I am discussing here is based on a common version which is widely spread in North China. So don’t be surprised if you come across or have come across a different version. I would compare first Prometheus and Nüwa and then Prometheus and Gun and analyze the culture reflected by their stories. Prometheus and Nüwa both are the creators of the human beings in their respective mythology. Prometheus was permitted by Zeus, who wants to express gratitude to Prometheus for helping him in the fight with the Titans, to populate the earth with humans and animals, together with his brother Epimetheus. -

The earliest appearance of the Yellow Emperor is prob- ably in genealogical records; then, after being an ancestral ruler, he becomes the earliest emperor and a legendary ruler. This demonstrates his shift from an ancestral context to a monarchic context and illustrates the gradual yet colossal shift in ancient Chinese political thought from a system of enfeoffment built on blood relations to a system of prefectures and counties based on regional ties. The image of the Yellow Emperor in the context of sacrifice is closely linked to the yin-yang and five elements theories begin- ning in the later stage of the Warring States period; as society developed, this image also became associated with a certain Daoist path, thereby acquiring a religious value. In a narrower sense, however, it refers to the culture of the Xiahou 夏后 clan of the mythical founder Yu 禹. In much of the contemporary research, the question of the primary ethnic affiliation of Xia culture is often overlooked and obscured, thus blurring the distinction between Xia culture in the broad and narrow senses. This has resulted in considerable conceptual and epistemological impreci- sion. Research on Xia culture can be conducted in two main ways: on the one hand, what has been called “metropolitan conjecture” and, on the other, cultural compari- son. Departing from the method of cultural comparison and bringing together tem- poral, spatial, and cultural elements in our analysis allows us to distinguish a primary central area within the “region of Yu” that coincides with Xia culture in the narrow sense, as reflected in later phases of the Wangwan 王灣 and Meishan 煤山 regional subtypes of Longshan culture [Longshan wenhua 龍山文化], from the later phases of the various archaeological remains found within a secondary and tertiary central area, which can be included in the category of Xia culture in a broad sense. Erlitou 二里頭 culture should be regarded principally as part of Xia culture. -

This dissertation sets out to rectify this deficiency in scholarship. By taking the demonic as a politico-cultural and philosophical category (but giving due respect to the intrinsic fuzziness, inexhaustibility and livingness thereof), the study undertaken herein moves away from the tendency to see the demonic in Nüxian waishi simply as a conscious literary means to a moral or discursive end, and strives to examine it in its own right (i.e., as the demonic-qua-demonic, with its own intrinsic logic) and in relation to other construals of the demonic outside of the said novel. Specifically, this dissertation first clarifies the qualities and structuralities of the demonic in Nüxian waishi, then situates it within an evolving trend of demon-glamorization (termed “demonogloria” herein) in the narrative literature of late imperial China. -
