  • Beatles History – Part Three: 1970-2008
BEATLES HISTORY – PART THREE: 1970-2008 The Solo Careers In September 1969, John Lennon told his musical partners at a business meeting that he was leaving The Beatles. It was decided that the split was to be kept secret until the group had secured a profitable new contract with EMI Records. In early 1970, The Beatles’ staff prepared the release of Let It Be, which had been recorded in January 1969. As George Martin had lost interest in the production, American producer Phil Spector was asked to turn The Beatles’ rough recordings into a valuable album. Spec- tor’s involvement, however, caused further friction between the band members, because Paul McCartney felt that Spector was ruining his song “The Long and Winding Road” with a lavish arrangement featuring an orchestra and a choir. In addition, the release of Let It Be collided with the release date of Paul McCartney’s first solo album, McCartney, which was scheduled for 10 April, 1970. The conflicts within the band finally reached their climax when the other Beatles ignored McCartney’s wish of removing Spector’s orchestral arrangement from the recording of his song. Consequently, Paul McCartney decided to inform the public that The Beatles had disbanded. The promotional copies of McCartney’s first album contained an interview, in which he stated that he did not want to work with The Beatles anymore, because of personal and musical dis- agreements. The release date of McCartney is therefore regarded as the date The Beatles broke up, although they legally existed as a band until 1976, when their contracts finally expired.

  • Ad Jeff Lynne Been Merely a Great Bandleader, Singer/Songwriter, Multi-Instrumentalist, Or Producer, His Place in the Pop Pantheon Would Be Secure
40 Years Str angeof MagıBc ad Jeff Lynne been merely a great bandleader, singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, or producer, his place in the pop pantheon would be secure. But Lynne has excelled in all those areas, crafting four decades of great rock music Hdistinguished by irrepressible hooks, manic energy, and glorious production. Lynne grew up in Birmingham, England, where he made a splash as guitarist/vocalist and producer/songwriter for the Idle Race in the late ‘60s. In 1970, he joined the great British cult band Move, where he co-produced, wrote songs, sang, played guitar and keyboards. The same year, he co-founded the Electric Light Orchestra with Move bandleader Roy Wood. When Wood left to form a new group, Lynne assumed control of E.L.O., writing, producing, and singing hit after hit throughout the decade. Even today, it’s hard not to be bowled over by the impact and innovation of “Evil Woman,” “Mr. Blue Sky,” or “Strange Magic,” a song whose title perfectly summarizes the Lynne mystique. As E.L.O. wound down in the ’80s, Lynne was contacted by George Harrison to work with him on his album Cloud Nine . “We became great friends, and I had the greatest of times doing that album”, says Lynne. “It was while we were mak - ing the album that George suggested we should form a group. And to this day, George and me are the founding mem - bers of the Traveling Wilburys. A group I’m very proud to be in.” In 1990, Lynne unveiled his only solo album, Armchair Theatre , which was critically acclaimed.

  • The End of the Line: the Traveling Wilburys Revisited
The End of the Line: The Traveling Wilburys revisited By Michael Jones August 2007 One of the most anticipated releases of the year is this three disc (two CDs and one DVD) set from The Travelling Wilburys. Why? Because for several years you couldn’t legitimately buy any Wilbury music. This writer, when he wanted to hear the first album, needed to download an illegal mp3 to do so! The accidental supergroup of the Travelling Wilburys had an equally accidental beginning. George Harrison needed to record a new song for the b-side of a single. His recent producer, Jeff Lynn, was working with Roy Orbison. Harrison’s guitar was at Tom Petty’s house. Bob Dylan’s studio was nearby. So when Harrison was finishing the writing of his song, Handle With Care, he included vocal parts for each person. Back in 1988 the head of a record company actually knew more about music than accounting. So it was no surprise when the head of Harrison’s record company knew that Handle With Care was far too good for a b-side. Convinced to put together a whole album, the five musicians wrote and sang for a couple of weeks. The result? A number one hit record, selling millions of copies. Travelling Wilburys Volume One was an unpretentious album that oozed fun. You could tell that the five musicians (plus session drummer extraordinaire Jim Keltner) were http://www.audioenz.co.nz/2007/wilbury.shtml having a ball. Highlights are the singles, Handle With Care and End Of The Line, both largely George Harrison compositions.
