FALL 2020 ACTIVITY GUIDE We Are Parks & Recreation! WHATEVER THE CRISIS WE ARE HERE FOR YOU LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR LETTER THE FROM Letter from the Director For the Fall 2020 Parks and Rec Activity Guide, I would like to take an opportunity to highlight the hard-working and selfless Parks and Recreation staff. To say this has been a challenging time is a major understatement. Nevertheless, Parks and Recreation staff have stepped up to innovate and serve the Santa Cruz community in new ways. Our Virtual Recreation programs have served thousands of Santa Cruz residents. Youth program staff has provided much needed childcare for working families at our summer camps. We have helped combat senior isolation through our thriving, virtual senior classes. We have worked with Economic Development to re-imagine spaces like the Wharf to create opportunities for restaurants and businesses to thrive. In addition, parks, trails, and beaches have served as critical spaces for exercise, socially distanced recreation, and an outlet for both the physical and mental health of our community. Use of West Cliff has been greater over the last few months than comparable time periods in past years. DeLaveaga Golf Course had its best month of June in 20 years. Parks and public spaces have also served as venues for our community to protest, to gather and march, and to exercise first amendment rights. Parks and Recreation is at the heart of providing these public spaces and services. While the positive impact of Parks and Rec has been demonstrated more than ever over the first half of 2020, we have begun to feel the financial impact from COVID-19. Please consider ways to get involved as a volunteer, engage as an Adopt-A-Park group, or support Friends of Parks and Recreation, our 501c3 non- profit support organization. See page 14 to learn more. As public health matters continue to command our attention and operations, I would like to highlight a couple of helpful resources. The Facility and Program Directory in this season’s Activity Guide offers web and social media links directly to our facility pages to check on the status of parks and facilities. The COVID-19 resource webpage will also remain up-to-date with current information on what is open and/or restricted. As we embark into this new season, Santa Cruz Parks and Rec will continue to work closely with County Public Health and our colleagues throughout the City to ensure that we stay up to date on safety measures and guidelines. The health and safety of the community is paramount. Thank you for sticking with us as we continue to socially distance, frequently wash hands, and wear our masks. Be safe and healthy…and have fun this season! See you in the parks, Tony Elliot PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION The Commission advises City Council and the department MEETING DATES on all matters concerning public recreation, including play- grounds, music, events and entertainment.
