Fortin - April 4, 2001 Prepared in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Architecture in the Faculty of Environmental Design, The University of Calgary Supervisor - Graham Livesey Key Words lunar development - extraterrestrial architecture - theoretical morphology - experimental design - retreat - architectural form - space exploration - space colonization - La Tourette Space development to date has unnecessarily placed a barrier between architectural theory and extraterrestrial design posing a legitimate threat to our understanding of future architecture outside of our atmosphere. This project is a formal exercise attempting to develop an architectural strategy for the seemingly unprecedented challenge of designing future extraterrestrial architecture. Through the design of a retreat on the moon for the year 2060, architecture in space is defined as a profession aspiring towards meaningful future design while responding to an informative past. The methodology of theoretical morphology provides a framework for the prediction of lunar architectural form responding to the parameters of the moon. By using a digital massing model of La Tourette, a monastery designed by Le Corbusier and consecrated in 1960, as the geometric model for the experiment, new architectural forms are suggested. Through the analysis of these forms, an appropriate model is selected for further study to inform the design of the retreat. The site, on the rim of Shackleton Crater at the lunar South Pole, provides a context for the morphed model to respond to such site parameters as a proposed infrastructure, daylight conditions, and the poetic significance of the event. The exploratory nature of the process offers insight into such lunar design elements as circulation, perception of space and structure, and the lunar floor surface. Clarke chapter 1 I n t ro c i i_j ct i o n As audiences swarmed theatres in 1968 to view 2001: A Space Odyssey, visionaries Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke presented not only an influential contribution to the film industry but also issued anon-going challenge to the world (Image 2). This film, recognized as a true science fiction classic, further ignited the imaginations of people, young and old, towards future human habitation in space (Image 4). Thirty-three years later in Kubrick's year, scientific and technological advancement have partially realized this vision through the establishment of habitation aboard the International Space Station (ISS)(lmage 3). However, many challenges presented in the film have also failed to be recognized. As awestruck moviegoers listened to the Blue Danube Waltz accompany the floating vessel through the vast emptiness of space, a hint at the spiritual experience of space was offered. This was a man-made vessel seemingly embraced by a greater journey - the journey of Mankind from its mother planet. The emotive response to this scene was just a small glimpse of the power of spaceflight in human spirituality and understanding. The first eluded challenge was therefore to recognize and communicate the relentless human spirit propelling exploration within space development. Another challenge, and the basis for this project, was directed specifically to the profession of architecture. In this film and the numerous science-fiction films prior to and since, space is almost exclusively experienced from the vessels the characters inhabit-the architecture. However, these built space environments are presently designed not for characters on gravity bound science-fiction film sets but rather for breathing astronauts and soon for the everyday person. Future building in space is largely unpredictable, however architecture must respond to the challenge presented. Regardless of where its location ortime frame, an architect should be able to design using the tools the profession has developed and with which it has equipped him/her. Instead, recent space development, more specifically proposed lunar architecture, has unnecessarily placed a barrier between architectural theory and the future posing a legitimate threat to the future of architectural understanding outside of our atmosphere. As predicted by Kubrick, Clarke, and the many others before and after, buildings on the moon will exist during this century and most likely in the next thirty years. Whether these buildings will be considered 'architecture' as opposed to 'engineered machines' has yet to be determined and it is time for architectural theory to consider this argument. Architecture has the ability to communicate the spirit of space flight and harmonize the technical within it. By embodying technological progress in an attempt to communicate the immaterial aspects of space exploration, architecture can cross the atmospheric barrier allowing the subjective journey of space to transcend. But how can architecture be designed responsibly for a future we cannot easily predict? The major obstacle in space design to date has been the lack of an architectural strategy for the seemingly unprecedented challenge of extraterrestrial architecture. Visionary and sci-fi architecture rely strictly on the development of alien forms and structure that do not respond to any established order in design.

When: Look for them when the terminator’s close by, typically a day before last quarter. Not all craters are best seen when the Sun is high in the lunar sky - in fact most aren’t! If craters aren’t par- ticularly bright or dark, they tend to disappear into the background when the Moon’s phase is close to full. These craters are best seen when the ‘terminator’ is nearby, or when the Sun is low in the lunar sky as seen from the crater. This causes oblique lighting to fall on the crater and create exaggerated shadows. Ultimately, this makes the crater look more dramatic and easier to see. We’ll use this effect for the next section on lunar mountains, but before we do, there are a couple of craters that we’d like to bring to your attention. Actually, the Moon is covered with a whole host of wonderful craters that look amazing when the lighting is oblique. During the summer and into the early autumn, it’s the later phases of the Moon are best positioned in the sky - the phases following full Moon. Unfortunately, this means viewing in the early hours but don’t worry as we’ve kept things simple. We just want to give you a taste of what a shadowed crater looks like for this marathon, so the going here is really pretty easy! First, locate the two craters Kepler and Copernicus which were marathon targets pointed out in Section 2.

    CHAPTER FOURTEEN MEN INTO SPACE: THE SPACE RACE AND ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION MARGARET A. WEITEKAMP The origins of the Cold War space race were not only political and technological, but also cultural.1 On American television, the drama, Men into Space (CBS, 1959-60), illustrated one way that entertainment television shaped the United States’ entry into the Cold War space race in the 1950s. By examining the program’s relationship to previous space operas and spaceflight advocacy, a close reading of the 38 episodes reveals how gender roles, the dangers of spaceflight, and the realities of the Moon as a place were depicted. By doing so, this article seeks to build upon and develop the recent scholarly investigations into cultural aspects of the Cold War. The space age began with the launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. But the space race that followed was not a foregone conclusion. When examining the United States, scholars have examined all of the factors that led to the space technology competition that emerged.2 Notably, Howard McCurdy has argued in Space and the American Imagination (1997) that proponents of human spaceflight 1 Notably, Asif A. These pictures would employ top actors, large casts and the elite of the Paramount special effects and art departments, and each would provide film composers with the opportunity to underscore spectacle, astonishing visual effects, terror and intense human drama. With its world-spanning plot and chaotic scenes of humanity preparing for the threat of approaching planets, When Worlds Collide features by far the busiest and most energetic score of the three sci-fi films represented on this set. Leith Stevens' eerie, foreboding melody for the approaching planets dominates the score, reinforcing both the menace of the looming planets and the boiling cauldron of human emotions that threaten to derail humanity's last hopes. The War Of The Worlds showcased scenes of destruction and mass panic that outdid even When Worlds Collide. Leith Stevens managed to find a fresh way to pay homage to Gustav Holsts' "Mars, The Bringer Of War" from The Planets. Instead of mimicking Holsts' famous rhythms, Stevens overlays driving percussion onto his main title music, which launches from a spiky, startling fanfare through a gloomy yet propulsive dirge for humanity finally brightening into brilliant, spine- chilling major chords.

    LRO Makes a Temperature Map of the Lunar South Pole 42 The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has recently created the first surface temperature map of the south polar region of the moon using date taken between September and October, 2009 when south polar temperatures were close to their annual maximum values. The colorized map shows the locations of several intensely cold impact craters that are potential cold traps for water ice as well as a range of other icy compounds commonly observed in comets. The approximate maximum temperatures at which these compounds would be frozen in place for more than a billion years is shown on the scale to the right. The LCROSS spacecraft was targeted to impact one of the coldest of these craters, and many of these compounds were observed in the ejecta plume. Samples without context have limited value Bulk planet properties, inventory of compositions Context requires either geologic field work or a simple regional setting Robotic missions tend to provide less context than human field study cf. Luna 20 and Apollo 16 Types of Exploratory Targets Reconnaissance Geologically simple sites where a “grab sample” of rocks and regolith can address and solve scientific issues Example: youngest mare lava flow, impact melt floor of fresh crater, regional pyroclastics Field Study Complex, multi-unit sites having a protracted evolution.
