2015 UCLA FOOTBALL JIM MORA Head Coach 4th Season Washington '84 On December 10, 2011, former Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora was named UCLA's 17th head coach in school history. In 2014, Coach Mora guided the Bruins to the ninth 10-win season in school his- tory, matching the school record for wins in a season. It marked the third straight year in which Mora's Bruins had produced at least nine wins, a À rst in program history. His 29 total wins are the most-ever by a UCLA coach in his initial three seasons on the job. Following the victory in the 2015 Alamo Bowl, UCLA had captured wins in 10 straight games away from the Rose Bowl to tie that school record, including a school-best 7-0 slate in 2014. That win was also the team's third over teams ranked among the Associated Press' Top 15 at the time of the contest, which was the most by the program since it defeated four such teams in 1952. The Bruins capped off the season ranked No. 10 in the À nal AP poll which was the highest for the program since 1998. Linebacker Eric Kendricks, who became the school's all-time leading tackler during the 2014 season, went on to be UCLA's À rst recipient of the Butkus Award and the À nished no lower than fourth in the NFL versus the run and in 2003, produced 42 second-straight winner of the Lott IMPACT Trophy. Quarterback Brett Hundley set sacks, to tie for second in the conference.

  • 2017 Joe Gibbs
JOE GIBBS: Team Owner Nearly a quarter century after winning his third Super Bowl as head coach of the NFL’s Washington Redskins, Joe Gibbs still hasn’t stopped adding to his impressive list of championships. Despite retiring as an NFL coach in 2008 after his second stint with the Redskins, the owner of Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) now has more Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Championships than Super Bowl wins as driver Kyle Busch helped Gibbs score his fourth title as an owner in NASCAR’s top series in 2015. As JGR enters its 26th season in 2017, Gibbs has shown no signs of slowing down as his team continues to shine as one of the sport’s premier organizations. Gibbs, who hails from Mocksville, North Carolina, oversees an organization that has produced four NASCAR Cup Series titles – Bobby Labonte in 2000, Tony Stewart in 2002 and 2005, and Kyle Busch in 2015. It also won NASCAR Xfinity Series owner titles in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2013, the Xfinity Series driver titles for Busch in 2009 and Daniel Suarez in 2016, and 267 NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity Series victories. Gibbs’ four Cup Series championships, five Xfinity Series titles, plus his three Super Bowl victories as coach of the Redskins in 1983, 1988 and 1992 mean he has won an incredible 12 championships in two of the most popular sports in the United States. “The thing that has always amazed me about championship runs in pro sports, at least in the four I’ve been involved with at JGR and the three I had in the NFL with the Redskins, is how difficult they are to win and how different they are, and that one year doesn’t buy you the next,” Gibbs said.

  • NFL Champion Coach Joe Gibbs Outclassed His Rivals Page 1 of 3
Joe Gibbs, Hall of Fame NFL Coach, Built The Redskins Into An Elite Team - In... Page 1 of 3 Print Close MANAGEMENT NFL Champion Coach Joe Gibbs Outclassed His Rivals By MIKE RICHMAN, FOR INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY Posted 09/12/2012 02:02 PM ET Joe Gibbs let his coaching on game day do the talking. He refused to mouth off during the week for fear it would create distractions for his team and motivate opponents. Case in point: When bombastic Philadelphia Eagles coach Buddy Ryan said a few days before a playoff game in January 1991 that Washington running back Earnest Byner would fumble three times, reporters pressed Gibbs for a response. The Redskins' coach refused to take Ryan's bait. Gibbs' silence spoke volumes about his disregard for triviality. "Joe was every bit as competitive as Buddy if not more, but he just never let it show because he understood that the whole circus act during the week didn't matter," Ray Didinger, a sportswriter at the time for the Philadelphia Daily News, told IBD. "All that mattered was what you did once the ball was kicked off. That was the way he prepared his team and that was the way they played against the Eagles." The Redskins beat the Eagles that day 20-6, one of Gibbs' most gratifying victories in his 16-year National Football League coaching career. Helping the coach have the last laugh were Byner's 77 yards receiving, 49 rushing — and no fumbles. Including that wild-card game, Gibbs boasted a playoff winning Gibbs took over the Redskins in 1981, won the NFL title the next year percentage of .708.

  • Kellen Winslow
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 17, No. 1 (1995) KELLEN WINSLOW By Don Smith Thanks to a last-second trade with the Cleveland Browns, the San Diego Chargers were able to select Kellen Winslow in the first round of the 1979 NFL draft. It turned out to be a masterful move because Winslow, a 6-5, 250-pound consensus all-America tight end from Missouri, became an instant super-star and a powerful contributor to the NFL's most prolific offense in the early 1980s. Injuries limited his playing time on certain occasions and eventually caused him to retire in 1987 after just nine seasons. But when Winslow did play, he performed so spectacularly that opposition defenders lay awake nights wondering if there was any legal way to stop him. Altogether, he caught 541 passes for 6,741 yards and 45 touchdowns. At the time of his retirement, he ranked fifth in receptions among active players and 12th among the all-time leading receivers. He is only the fourth tight end to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Mike Ditka became the first Hall of Fame tight end in 1988 and he was followed by John Mackey in 1992 and Jackie Smith in 1994. Winslow's first few years in the NFL were, by his own admission, "like a fantasy." He began his rookie season on a high note with a team-leading 25 receptions in seven games before a broken leg suffered in the seventh game ended his season. But he bounced back a year later as good as ever with a career- high and NFL-leading 89 receptions, best ever for a tight end up to that time.

Wortham Theater Center Houston, Texas February 4, 2017 Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2017 Morten Andersen (on what it was like getting the knock at the door, and the fact that it’s been a long time since a kicker was inducted into the Hall of Fame) “Twenty-five years, I believe. I asked my wife, while we we’re in the room with some friends, ‘That’s an awful loud knock for room service. Is this a club sandwich?’ Dave (Baker), you didn’t have a club sandwich, but it was sure a nice alternative. It was very emotional – crying L.T. (LaDainian Tomlinson), I agree. We shed a few tears, and I’m tremendously humbled and excited to be in this class. Congratulations to everyone, it’s pretty mind blowing right now, I’m kind of floating, if you don’t mind.” (on what he knew about football coming from Denmark, and what it means for the country) “It’s going to be huge, there’s no question. I think the Crown Prince texted me (joking). I don’t know, maybe not. That would be kind of cool. I didn’t know anything about football when I came in 1977 and barely spoke the language. It happened very fast, watched the jamboree games in the metal bleachers, watched the quarterback-center exchange and said I don’t want to be that guy, or that guy. You have a big guy in tight pants bending over and then you have a small guy in equally tight pants going up behind him and I said, ‘No.

251 251 Chapter 7 Managing Innovation & Change: Branch Rickey Meets Machiavelli Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be. John Wooden, former UCLA basketball coach One thing is clear: we don’t have the option of turning away from the future...No one can stop productive change in the long run because the marketplace inexorably embraces it. Bill Gates, Microsoft CEO For the 1986-87 season the NCAA adopted the three-point shot set at a radius of about 19 feet from the basket. During the season, several coaches exploited the new rule at the expense of their coaching colleagues. Rick Pitino, for one, built his entire offense around the shot with his team taking many more shots per game from the 3-point range than most teams. His Providence Friars rose from relative obscurity to compete with the Big East big boys. Ultimately, the Friars advanced to the Final Four not only for only the second time in school history without any players with strong NBA potential. The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels also made liberal use of the 3- point shot to advance to the Final Four in 1987. The Rebels contained several highly touted players and a coach, Jerry Tarkanian, already known for a freewheeling offensive style. His 1977 Final Four club averaged nearly 100 points per game long before the advent of the shot 252 252 clock or the 3-point shot. UNLV utilized the 3-point shot extensively. Even Bob Knight, a coach known for his emphasis on defense and deliberate offensive strategy, took full advantage of the rule change.
