Chris is studying the melo- dies that have been passed down for over a thousand years with Los Penitentes/ Hermanos y la Morada. (See related story on page 20.) He describes “There is a deep spiritual journey through the lyrics (prayers) and the melodies are sung a capella. These will somehow be represented in the May concert at Chris Arellano the conclusion of this first phase of my Joe Marquez research and recordings.” Next, he will be exploring the northern New Mexico/ southern Colorado tradition, Los Dias New Year Celebration, which dates back hundreds of years. This project is a collaboration with the Manitos Community Memory project and Questa Stories. Both entities gather and share voices, stories, images, and traditions of the communities of northern Taos County and southern Colorado villages. The work Chris is doing will become part of these archives. HAWAII. NOW? REALLY? By EMILY WILDE It all started last year in March of 2020. Mom had planned a two-week Ha- waiian extravaganza for herself, celebrat- ing her 80th birthday. Then COVID-19 rolled out and proceeded to become our new reality. She begrudgingly can- celed the trip. In the interim, she decided it would be most enjoyable for the extravagan- za to become a mother-daughter trip and surely all this COVID stuff will have concluded by December...so she proceeded to reroute and juggle all the points and credits. She managed to line up all the plans again, this time in De- cember of 2020. As December loomed closer, we started to realize that the new reality wasn’t going away.
