Yadkin Ripple • Thursday, September 19,2019 HARVEST FESTIVAL 9 Indera Mills rich in heritage and community By Kitsey Burns Harrison [email protected]

In the year 1900, textile businessman Fran- cis Henry “Colonel” Fries was taking a barge trip down the Nile river in Egypt on a family vacation. Also on a similar trip was a royal family from India. It was there that Fries met Princess Indera. The story, explained Indera Mills owner and President John Willingham, is that Fries was so taken with Indera’s beauty that he asked her father for permission to some day use her name for one of his companies. Four- teen years later, in Winston-Salem, Indera Mills was founded. Today, 105 years later, Indera Millls is remains one of the unique manufacturing facilities located in the heart of the Yadkin Valley in Yadkinville.
