Key Points The Festival: Onam is a major harvest festival in Kerala and is celebrated to honour the home-coming of Asura king Mahabali who brought about peace and prosperity in Kerala. Time: It is one of the three major festivals of Kerala, celebrated during the month of Chingam, the first month in the Malayalam calendar, Kollavarsham. The other two major festivals of the state are Vishu and Thiruvathira. The 10-day harvest festival begins on Atham (first day of Onam) and concludes on Thiruvonam (last day). Celebration: Onam is celebrated by making Pookkalam (the flower rangolis). Other rituals are also performed which includes-Vallam Kali (the boat races), Pulikali (the tiger dances), Kummattikali (mask dances), Onathallu (martial arts), among others. Alleppey Tourism Development Cooperative: The Case of Network Advantage Babu P George Abstract This case study portrays an important organizational innovation in the SME sector of the tourism industry. ATDC is a cooperative society of houseboat owners and other stakeholders in the houseboat tourism business in Alleppy, a backwater town located in the southern State of Kerala, India. The study describes the genesis and growth of houseboat tourism in Alleppey which is intertwined with the history of ATDC. Cooperativism is hardly ever mentioned in the tourism literature as one of the formidable options for business organization and only scarcely observed in the world of tourism practice. However, in the case of ATDC, the cooperative experimentation was inevitable given the chemistry of unique economic and socio-cultural circumstances surrounding the small-scale boat owners. The case of ATDC is a revelation of the otherwise unnoticed benefits of cooperative alliances in an industry like tourism: the provision of truly authentic products to the tourists; the opportunity for mass-customization; and the concern of the alliance members for sustainable development of the region. Muslim Women Rights Day ● 1st August has been recorded as “Muslim Women Rights Day” in the country’s history to mark first anniversary of the passage of Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. ● The law made triple talaq a criminal offence. ● Tiple talaq divorce is banned by many Islamic countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia. Provisions of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 ● The Act makes all declaration of talaq, including in written or electronic form, to be void (i.e. not enforceable in law) and illegal. ● It also makes a declaration of talaq a cognizable offence attracting up to three years imprisonment with a fine. ● A cognizable offence is one for which a police officer may arrest an accused person without warrant. ● The Magistrate may grant bail to the accused. The bail may be granted only after hearing the woman (against whom talaq has been pronounced), and if the Magistrate is satisfied that there are reasonable grounds for granting bail. ● The offence may be compounded (i.e. the parties may arrive at a compromise) by the Magistrate upon the request of the woman (against whom talaq has been declared). ● A Muslim woman against whom talaq has been declared, is entitled to seek subsistence allowance from her husband for herself and for her dependent children. ● The country has seen a decline of 82% in the triple talaq case since the implementation of the act. One Nation One Card Scheme integrates four more States/UT’s ● eligible beneficiaries would be able to avail entitled food grains under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) from any Fair Price Shop(FPSs) in the country using the same ration card.
