  • Arthur Penn Fifty Filmmakers Essay with SL Edits
Arthur Penn Nearly fifty years after it first appeared on cinema screens, Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Arthur Penn’s elegy to the infamous outlaw couple, maintains an iconic place in American film history. Popular accounts of the late 1960s and early 1970s ‘Hollywood Renaissance’ often suggest that this film helped usher in a new era of cutting-edge auteur cinema. On the back of Bonnie and Clyde’s success, so the story goes, studio executives desperate to tap the youth market handed over unprecedented creative control to directors such as Mike Nichols, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese and Robert Altman. Experimenting with innovative formal techniques and explicit thematic content, these directors have since come to symbolise Hollywood’s last golden age – a final flash of inspiration before Jaws (1975) and Star Wars (1977) set the industry on a conservative path once more.1 Within this celebratory narrative (which, as several film historians have observed, greatly oversimplifies post-World War II American film production2), Penn is both prophet and proponent of a countercultural sensibility sweeping the movies in the late 1960s. To view Arthur Penn as simply a director of the Hollywood Renaissance is nevertheless to elide the continuities present across his back catalogue, and its relationship to broader filmmaking trends. Long before any notion of a ‘Renaissance’ had emerged, the critic Robin Wood observed that ‘there is nothing in Bonnie and Clyde, stylistically, technically, thematically, which was not already implicit’ in Penn’s first feature, 1958’s The Left Handed Gun.3 Changing norms regarding censorship and the impact of sixties political and social movements might have brought certain concerns further to the surface, but the director’s films speak more to the tensions and contradictions pervading cinema in the post-war years than any radical break circa 1967.

  • A Guide to the Filmscripts in the Lilly Library Book Department
From Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion to Zorro Rides Again: A Guide to the Filmscripts in the Lilly Library Book Department There are presently over nine hundred scripts in the Lilly Li brary Book department. The movies represented range from the silent version of Ben Hur to Breaking Away. The collection's scope is broad; one can find scripts for great film classics, musicals, mys teries, adventures, shorts, westerns, comedies, and science fiction movies. Many types of filmscripts make up the collection-drafts, cutting continuities, preliminary editions, shooting finals. Gener ally the scripts are accompanied by publicity photos. Although the majority of filmscripts in the collection are for talkies, several scripts are for silent films. The text of a silent film script is devoted primarily to directions for camera shots and de scriptions of the action, and provides title captions instead of dia logue. The earliest script in the collection is for The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (released in 1921), the film that gave Rudolph Valentino his first starring role. The Big Parade (1925), King Vidor's popular film about an average man's experiences at war, estab lished John Gilbert as a top star. The Jazz Singer (1927) was the first full length feature with both singing and talking, starring AI }olson in his first movie role. Wings (1928), considered to be the last of the silent spectaculars, was the first movie to receive an Academy Award. Clara Bow and Charles Rogers starred in this tale of World War I flyers. One of the most lavish films of the silent era was the the 1926 MGM version of Ben Hur, starring Ramon Novarro, directed by William Wellman.

  • Place Images of the American West in Western Films
PLACE IMAGES OF THE AMERICAN WEST IN WESTERN FILMS by TRAVIS W. SMITH B.S., Kansas State University, 2003 M.A., Kansas State University, 2005 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Geography College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2016 Abstract Hollywood Westerns have informed popular images of the American West for well over a century. This study of cultural, cinematic, regional, and historical geography examines place imagery in the Western. Echoing Blake’s (1995) examination of the novels of Zane Grey, the research questions analyze one hundred major Westerns to identify (1) the spatial settings (where the plot of the Western transpires), (2) the temporal settings (what date[s] in history the Western takes place), and (3) the filming locations. The results of these three questions illuminate significant place images of the West and the geography of the Western. I selected a filmography of one hundred major Westerns based upon twenty different Western film credentials. My content analysis involved multiple viewings of each Western and cross-referencing film content like narrative titles, American Indian homelands, fort names, and tombstone dates with scholarly and popular publications. The Western spatially favors Apachería, the Borderlands and Mexico, and the High Plains rather than the Pacific Northwest. Also, California serves more as a destination than a spatial setting. Temporally, the heart of the Western beats during the 1870s and 1880s, but it also lives well into the twentieth century. The five major filming location clusters are the Los Angeles / Hollywood area and its studio backlots, Old Tucson Studios and southeastern Arizona, the Alabama Hills in California, Monument Valley in Utah and Arizona, and the Santa Fe region in New Mexico.

This document will provide guidance for the management of about 375,000 acres of BLM land in northcentral Montana and about 396,000 acres of federal minerals. The Approved Plan is nearly identical to the Proposed Plan (Alternative F) presented in the 2008 Proposed Resource Management Plan and Final Environmental Impact Statement (Proposed RMP/Final EIS). The Approved Plan empha- sizes protection and restoration of the natural resources while still providing for resource use and enjoyment. Where appropriate, it proposes a combination of management actions including allowing natural processes to continue, apply- ing more treatment methods to achieve a natural range of native plant associations, and protecting the remote settings that currently exist in the Monument.

HOLLYWOOD AND THE WILD WEST Professor Wise — University of North Texas — Spring 2017 Roy Rogers filming in Lone Pine, California, 1938 This class provides a rigorous introduction to the critical study of western films from an historical perspective. We will study how the genre’s art and performance have helped create and subvert popular understandings of western history, and how the genre’s consistent popularity attests to its flexibility in interpreting complex historical relationships between freedom, violence, race, gender, and social inequality. So too, we will explore how imaginations of the American West as a “wild” place have opened possibilities for understanding nonhuman actors such as animals, the weather, or the earth itself as significant agents in historical transformations, a characteristic of western films that can powerfully disturb and naturalize viewers’ cultural and political expectations. Students will learn to uncover, identify, and analyze from a critical perspective the meta-narratives of western history that have framed these historical visions in both past and present.
