Representative Report Brook Hatwell - HCA Coach & Eimear Richardson – NDCA GM Community

HCA Senior Men Coach: Brook Hatwell Manager: Kevin Hamilton

Fergus Hickey Hamilton had a strong defence of the Fergus Hickey with four ‘first-inning-winnings-draws’ to finish top of the table by a clear ten point margin.

A strong start to the competition led by a stunning five wickets by Anurag Verma, set up a strong platform against Northland dismissing the side for 81-10 before the HCA middle order of Elliot Santner (39), Anish Desai (43) , Peter Bocock (53), Keir Bettley (37) and Freddy Walker (35*) amassed 252/9 in return.

Continued momentum against Counties Manukau in round two saw another strong start with the ball as James (Jimmy) Baker claimed 6-13 and F Walker 4-19 to dismiss Counties Manukau for 84. Elliot Santner led the chase with 87 runs before Paddy Carsons (86), Bettley (66) and F Walker (56*) secured the first innings victory, HCA 392 all out.

The third round against Bay of Plenty (BOP) was a hard fought game in which momentum swung frequently. The loss of two quick wickets was navigated by E Santner (33) and Carsons (68). However it was F.Walker that top scored (83) and well supported by Kuwyn Price (75) to propel HCA to 336-10 in the 78th over. With ball in hand, Baker claimed two early wickets to leave BOP 30-3 while F. Walker (24-9-65-3) and Troy Mitchell (19-5-49-2) toiled through the middle overs to ensure HCA secured first innings as BO were dismissed 289-10 in the 94th over.

In the final round against neighbours Waikato Valley, HCA worked hard in the field as partnerships formed in the middle but Josh Brown (18-1-78-3) and Michael Dodunski (25.4-4-81-3) claimed wickets at crucial times to stem the onslaught and restrict WVCA to 299/10. E.Santner top scored in reply with 74 from 164 balls and was well supported by #3 Desai with 66 from 117 balls. The middle order carried the momentum before Anton Devcich hit a rapid 49 from only 43 balls to propel HCA to 301-7 and secure the Fergus Hickey trophy.

Hamilton had three players each of the top ten rankings for the competition;

Batter Runs Ave Bowler Wicket Ave

Elliot Santner (2) 233 58.25 James Baker (3) 10 7.50

Freddy Walker (6) 191 191.00 Freddy Walker (6) 9 19.33

Paddy Carsons (9) 179 59.67 Michael Dodunski (8) 7 18.57

Brian Dunning The tournament severely hampered by the weather in Taupo with Rounds 2 and 5 abandoned. Bowlers shared the wickets against first opponents Waikato Valley, as F.Walker claimed 4-0-13-3 to restrict WVCA to 109-9. A slight stutter with the lose of early wickets was quickly forgetting as Brown and F.Walker steadied the chase before Sajith Dhambagolla smashed 30* from 18 balls to secure victory in the 14th over.

6 | P a g e

On day two, HCA lost to eventual winners Northland in a high scoring game as Northland amassed 212-6, Troy Mitchell and Baker claiming two wickets each to stem the pace. In response, Brown and F.Walker both surpassed half centuries, but as the middle order succumbed to the run rate, HCA finished 38 runs short.

A rain affected lose against Bay of Plenty in the fourth round proved to be the final play for the tournament and thus ensured a 5th place finishing for HCA. F. Walker continued his good form with 70 from 48 balls but partnerships were few and far between as HCA reached 158-8. With rain about, BOP batted with aggression and did just enough to secure a win by DL calculation with 46-2 after 5 overs.

Hawke Cup HCA began the Hawke Cup as holders into the 2019/20 season and fought off a spirited first challenge against Bay of Plenty at Galloway Park. Michael Dodunski in his 100th representative appearance for HCA (the fifth player to ever achieve this feat), led the charge with ball in hand claiming 4-37, supported by Baker and Matt Wallbank with three wickets each as BOP reached 271-10. It was a hard fought chase as HCA stumbled to 34-3, however E.Santner (33) repelled the probing attack before Matt Whitley, Bettley and F.Walker secured the necessary partnerships in support of top scorer Brook Hatwell who finished 78* from 292 balls to secure first innings and the vital win to progress.

The second defence against Hawkes Bay was a strong victory as Baker (21-2-56-4) and Wallbank (15-6-38-3) led the attack with ball in hand dismissing the challengers for 166. The platform was set and E.Santner set to work at the crease amassing 157 from 386 balls in a fantastic innings of skill and determination. Well supported by Desai, BJ Watling and Bettley in addition to cameos from Bocock, F.Walker and Dodunski, HCA secured victory reaching 452- 10.

In the third defence against Canterbury Country, HCA failed to fire with the bat and were dismissed for 98. In reply, Canterbury County reached 240 all out as F.Walker ran through the lower order to claim 36.1-11-76-5. HCA were determined in response as the top order set about the task led by E.Santner (45), Bettley (55) and Devcich (39) to reach 243 all out. A couple of early wickets gave hope to the defenders, but unable to break partnerships, Canterbury Country surpassed the required amount to claim victory and the Hawke Cup.

HCA Development / A Basil McBurney HCA enjoyed a strong performance in the Basil McBurney and finished as title holders after victory in each of the five rounds.

A strong victory against Poverty Bay was led by Carsons with 85 runs and supported by Whitley (46) and James Field (32) before Jack Devane (4-27), Nicholas Farrell (3-8) and Elliot Santner (3-7) shared the wickets.

Against Waikato Valley, HCA bowlers Wallbank, Ben Morris-Brown and Farrell ensured that Waikato Valley were restricted to a modest total of 142 before Devane (44) and Callum Hill (35) led the response as HCA reached 143-4.

A strong first innings performance with the bat led by Dhambagolla (73) set up 221-8 against Northland before Cooper Rowell claimed 5-26 and Kuwyn Price 3-29 as Northland were dismissed 60 runs short.

In the fourth round against Bay of Plenty it was a clash of the top of the table as the HCA line up amassed 267-8 through strong performances led by Hill (72) and numerous contributions throughout the order including Whitley (36), Ruben Clinton (28) and Alex Clare (28*). HCA bowlers had to work hard in reply, but with the first breakthrough in the 19th over , a mini collapse was triggerd as BOP fell from 81-0 to 128-7, eventually finishing on 159 all out as Ryan Smith claimed 4-30 and C Rowell and Satvir Singh taking two wickets each.

7 | P a g e

In the last round against Counties Manukau, victory would secure the title and chasing 215 for the title after a Morris- Brown five wicket haul, Clinton (97*) and Dhambagolla (76) stood firm as HCA surpassed the required runs with ten overs to spare and eight wickets in hand.

Hamilton had four players each of the top ten rankings for the competition;

Batter Runs Ave Bowler Wicket Ave

Sajith Dhambagolla (2) 219 43.80 Ben Morris-Brown (2) 8 16.38

Callum Hill (5) 141 28.20 Cooper Rowell (4) 7 10.29

Northern Premier League (NPL) Coaches: Janice Fraser & Brett Sorenson

The NPL continues to evolve as a development opportunity for female players across the Northern Districts region. Two formats were played this year across six teams. The 50 over format was competed for by teams “Pink” and “Maroon” while the T20 format was played for by the “Sonic”, “Velocity”, “Galaxy” and “Power”. To ensure competitive opportunities, players are mixed across the teams to best ensure strong matches as the growth of the competition and female game continues as the core focus.

The 50 over format finished with one win for each of team “Pink” and team “Maroon”, while Eimear Richardson finished as the highest ranking HCA representative in 2nd place and Georgina Harris (6th) and Felicity Leydon-Davis (7th) also making the top 10. Off spinners Richardson (1st) and Charlotte Sarsfield (3rd) were in the top ranked bowlers for HCA representation, followed closely by in-swing bowler Shriya Naidu (5th) and up-and-coming pace bowler Emma Baker (6th).

The T20 format was played across a number of double headers with Velocity eventual winners in the final. To finish the season this year, a ‘Super Over Challenge’ was played out as each team played in a round-robin format, with Sonic the eventual winners.

Felicity Leydon-Davis finished as top run scorer of the T20 format with 209 runs and an average of 209.00, while Eimear Richardson finished second with 164 runs and an average of 54.67.
