With two outs, first base open and Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela standing in the on-deck circle, Indians manager Terry Francona called for an intentional walk to Tony Wolters in the second inning on Tuesday night. One pitch later, the groundwork had been laid for the Tribe's 11-3 loss at Coors Field. "Those are things that kind of make you stay up at night," Francona said. Colorado's lineup dismantled Cleveland's pitching to the tune of 12 hits, including two home runs off the bat of former Indians slugger Mark Reynolds. Even in the wake of the lopsided score, though, it was the second-inning, bases-clearing double by Senzatela -- one pitch after Wolters removed his shin guard and trotted to first base -- that felt like the game's turning point. With the bases loaded, Clevinger attacked Senzatela with a first-pitch fastball low in the strike zone. Heading into the night, the Colorado pitcher had three hits in 21 at-bats, and each of those came on elevated heaters. None of that mattered, as Senzatela was in attack mode and he split the right-center-field gap with a line drive that cleared the bases and put the Indians in a 3-0 hole. Clevinger wore a look of disgust as the ball bounced through the outfield grass. Senzatela clapped his hands hard and jumped into the air in excitement upon reaching second base.

Clarke A Thesis Submitted to Department of Economics Skidmore College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for a B.A. Degree Thesis Advisor: Joerg Bibow May 3rd, 2016 Abstract Modern statistical analysis has allowed for teams to more accurately measure Major League Baseball player performance. However, other than tracing wins there are few ways to track the performance of on-field managers whose strategies, decisions, and expertise fundamentally influence the outcome of each game. I begin this paper by investigating and critiquing prior empirical analyses that have attempted to quantify the effect of managerial skill on team performance. Using Stochastic Frontier Analysis and data from the 2008-2015 MLB seasons, I expand on previous research by calculating managerial efficiency estimates while including control variables that better objectively measure player performance. I find that the least efficient managers achieve winning percentages that are around 80% of what is possible, given their players’ talent level.

MEDIA CLIPS –April 29, 2018 Blackmon hits NL-leading 9th homer in loss Marquez's solid outing not enough as Rockies' bats can't overcome early deficit By Glenn Sattell / Special to MLB.com | Apr. 27th, 2018 MIAMI -- Miami welcomed back a pair of familiar faces to Marlins Park on Saturday and both played key roles in a 4-1 win over the Rockies, evening the three-game series at one game apiece. Through five innings, the Rockies did little against Marlins left-handed starter Wei-Yin Chen (1-0), who was making his first Major League start since May 1 of last season. But Charlie Blackmon opened the sixth inning with a 429-foot home run into the right center-field seats to cut the Marlins' lead to 3-1. It was his ninth homer of the season and eighth on the road. Ian Desmond followed with a double and a one-out single by Trevor Story put the tying runs on base marking the end of Chen's long-awaited return. "It looked like he was moving the ball in and out," manager Bud Black said of Chen's success. "It looked like there wasn't a lot of bad misses. The fastball was a little sneaky velocity. We knew he had a little life in his fastball. It was more about the fastball command." The Marlins worked out of the jam when reliever Nick Wittgren struck out Chris Iannetta and then got Gerardo Parra to fly out to end the inning. Derek Dietrich got that run back for the Marlins, leading off the seventh inning with his third home run of the year, a 393- foot blast off Rockies reliever and former Marlin Mike Dunn.
