Modern Classics (Finland) Arto Paasilinna 1942-2018 Arto Paasilinna is perhaps the most renowned contemporary Finnish writer, having published 35 novels and countless oth- er works over a career spanning 50 years. His most famous books include The Year of the Hare, The Howling Miller, A Charming Mass Suicide, and The Forest of Hanged Foxes. Paasilinna’s books have sold over 8 million copies worldwide and have been translated extensively into over 40 languages. Paasilinna’s depictions of the endless escapades of Finns and their irrepressible attitude towards life have claimed a per- manent place in Finland’s literary canon. His tragi-comic sto- ries about life in the North—along with his keen, satirical de- pictions of Finnish society—have captured the imaginations of millions of readers around the world. Often delving into magical realism, Paasilinna is sometimes described as an eco- philosopher; his works are simultaneously timely and time- less. Exploring issues such as suicide, ageing, desperation, and everyday dreariness, Paasilinna paints a hilarious and joyful picture of the human race. At the core of his wild adventures lies a philosophical understanding of people as prisoners of modern conventions, mediocrity, and the other scourges of modern life—which his protagonists pig-headedly fight against. Works by Paasilinna have been adapted to film and stage, both in Finland and abroad, and also as graphic novels. Modern Classics (Finland) Arto Paasilinna The Year of the Hare An internationally bestselling comic novel in which a man—with the help of a hare—realises what’s important in life. Journalist Vatanen is burnt out and sick of the city.

It examines the relationships that are formed between Helsinki and fictional characters, focusing, especially, on the way in which urban public space is experienced. Particular attention is given to the description of movement through urban space. The primary material consists of more than sixty novels, collections of short stories and individual short stories. Theoretically, this study draws on two sets of frameworks: on the one hand, the expanding field of literary studies of the city, and on the other hand, theoretical concepts provided by humanistic and critical geography, as well as urban studies. Following an introduction, which includes a concise history of Helsinki, a theoretical chapter charts the relevant concepts and theoretical approaches to the city in literature.

  • Finnish Literature in the Heart of Europe, After the Fall of the Iron Curtain
Scandinavica Vol 51 No 2 2012 Finnish Literature in the Heart of Europe, after the Fall of the Iron Curtain Jan Dlask and Lenka Fárová Charles University in Prague Abstract Translating from small literatures into a small language has specific mechanisms. This is even more true for countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which in the late 1980s underwent great changes. IN this case study, which follows up on the topic of former studies, the authors concentrate on the Finnish literature translated for the Czech book market after 1989. Finnish literature is understood only as published Finnish language fiction, poetry and drama. This study uses traditional chronological, statistical and comparativemethods, but is also inspired by Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of literary field. A field of literary production, having two polarities (commercial/ intellectual pole; young / old age), is enetered into by translators and publishers, who have their own strategies and capital (economical, cultural, social, educational, symbolical), and who select writers and books from a certain space of possibilities. Key words Finnish literature, translations, Czech, sociology of literature, small literatures 58 Scandinavica Vol 51 No 2 2012 Introduction From a sociological point of view, the publishing of Nordic literature translations in the smaller European book markets, rather than e.g. the British, German, French or Russian markets, has its own specific mechanisms. In this particular case-study, which follows up on the topic of a study published in Finland dealing with the situation of the Czechoslovakian book market up until 1992 (see Fárová 1996), we concentrate on the Finnish literature translated for the Czech book market after the so-called Velvet Revolution of 1989.
