  • The Bay Bridge Metonymy: How Maryland Newspapers Interpreted the Opening of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge
American Journalism, 25:2, 57-83 Copyright © 2008, American Journalism Historians Association The Bay Bridge Metonymy: How Maryland Newspapers Interpreted the Opening of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge By David W. Guth Using metonymy as a means of analysis, this paper measures the different editorial approaches Maryland-area newspapers had to the opening of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in 1952. The bridge opened travel routes to a historically isolated section of the state. Newspapers on both sides of the bay saw the bridge as a metonym for man’s supremacy over nature. To a lesser degree, they also viewed it as triumph of capitalism. Western Shore newspapers widely saw the bridge as a metonym for statewide unity. Eastern Shore news- papers viewed it more as a metonym for unwelcome change and the achievement of regional equality. The bridge also became a met- onym of redemption for former Governor William Preston Lane, Jr., who had championed the bridge and other road improvements—as well as budget and tax increases to pay for them—at the cost of his political career. n the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the Chesa- peake Bay Bridge in 2002, a Baltimore Sun editorial Osaid, “In a way its creators never could have anticipat- ed, the 4.3-mile double span has struck a deep emotional chord in most who live in the region.” David W. • Annapolis John Smith History
Annapolis John Smith History On June 12, 1608, Capt. John Smith and his crew sailed their Discovery Barge close to this buoy's location at the mouth of the Severn River as they explored the Chesapeake Bay's upper western shore. Long-time residents of Anne Arundel County, who love this region's pretty but short rivers, including the West, Rhode, South, Severn, and Magothy, find it difficult to understand why he didn't stop to explore any of them in detail. The answer lies in his primary objective, to find the Northwest Passage through the continent to the Pacific Ocean, which his patrons at The Virginia Company of London were convinced lay within the Chesapeake. Thus he dismissed these rivers with the following comment: "The western shore by which we sailed we found all along well watered, but very mountainous and barren, the valleys very fertile, but extreme thick of small wood so well as trees and much frequented with wolves, bears, deer, and other wild beasts. We passed many shallow creeks but the first inlet we found navigable for a ship we called Bolus..." The detail on his map suggests that he looked briefly into the West and Rhode Rivers, noted the mouth of the South River, came far enough into the Severn to note Spa Creek's mouth to the southwest and Whitehall Bay to the north, and passed close enough to the Magothy to note its narrow mouth before turning into the Bolus, which is today's Patapsco. Smith had recently visited the Nanticoke people on the lower Eastern Shore, who had told him about a powerful tribe on a large waterway to the north.
