British Rowing Board Director Biographies 2016 Annamarie was elected as Chairman in 2013 having held the post of Deputy Chairman of British Rowing from 2002-2013. She has represented Great Britain at Rowing, competing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and the World Rowing Championships from 1994 to 1997, winning World Championship gold in 1993. Annamarie was elected to the BPA Board in November 2008 and became Vice-Chairman in 2013. She was appointed to the BOA Board in 2014. She has served as an Athlete Representative for British Rowing and also on the BOA Athlete Commission. She has held office as the Lead Safeguarding Officer and Equality & Anti-doping Lead for British Rowing. As President of the National Federation she also represents the sport at FISA, the Chairman international governing body and is currently Commonwealth Liaison for FISA. Annamarie Phelps, CBE Annamarie’s professional career is in the art world. She is a non-executive director of The Fine Art Society plc and an independent art consultant / curator. She received a CBE for her services to the sport in the 2016 New Year’s Honours List. Gary has had a thirty year career in the pharmaceutical industry working in business functions; sales, sales management and learning and development. His last role was as National Training Manager in the UK for a world top twenty pharmaceutical company. Since leaving the Pharmaceutical industry he has been self-employed as a learning and development consultant with an interest in business coaching and the learning and development function. He also runs a residential letting business. Gary has been committed to rowing in different capacities; as an athlete, volunteer Deputy Chairman working at events from local to Olympic/Paralympic level, coach, coach educator, regional Gary Harris representative on a national committee, member of a regional rowing council, British Rowing Board member. In February 2015 he was re-elected as Deputy Chairman for a further four-year term of office. 1 Prior to his appointment as CEO of British Rowing in January 2015, Andy was the first Chief Executive of UK Anti-Doping (UKAD). He was responsible for establishing UKAD as a leading organisation, managing and promoting clean sport in the UK and internationally. Between 2012 and 2015 Andy was the Chairman of the European Committee for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Andy has worked in sport for over 15 years after completing a BSc in Sport (Science and Administration). During this time he has held a number of positions in national and international sporting organisations, including Manager of Sport Services for Paralympics New Zealand, President of New Zealand Wheelchair Rugby and Medical and Scientific Director at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in Germany. Chief Executive Officer He was a member of WADA’s International Standard for Testing Working Group and Andy Parkinson played an active role in WADA’s Independent Observer Programme. He attended the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, the 2009 Games of the Small States of Europe as Chair, the 2010 Tour de France as Co-Chair and the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games as Chair. Andrew is an independent Chartered Surveyor and a member of Staines Rowing Club and Hampton School Boat Club. He is a Steward of Henley Royal Regatta and was the Deputy Chairman for Rowing’s 2011 Olympic Test event and the 2013 Rowing World Cup at Dorney Lake. At the Olympic Games, London 2012, Andrew was one of the National Technical Officials. Through his business he has experience in strategic planning, policy making and property law, at both corporate and government levels. He has experience of equality, diversity and ethics matters as a past member of the RICS Conduct and Disciplinary Board and as an Arbitrator and Mediator. Chairman Sport Committee Andrew Crawford Andrew was appointed as Chairman of the Sport Committee in October 2015. 2 As President of Scottish Rowing Mike sits on the Board of British Rowing for a three-year term of office that alternates with Welsh Rowing. When not on the Board he will continue to be closely involved with a role on the Finance Committee. Mike has worked in the IT sector for over 38 years and has run his own consultancy company since 1990. He has been involved in rowing since his school days in Aberdeen and in the past has been the President or Captain of several Scottish clubs. Mike has been on the organising committee of several FISA, Commonwealth and domestic regattas. He moved on to be a member of the board of Scottish Rowing in 2005, becoming Home Nations Director Vice President in 2007 then President in 2008, a post he currently still holds. Mike Morrice He became a member of the Board of British Rowing in 2009. Laura joined the Board in October 2015 having been elected by Council. She started her rowing life at Upper Thames RC, before moving to her current club, Maidenhead RC. Laura has enjoyed success at competitions nationally and internationally, as a Junior and as a Lightweight Senior. She joined the Thames Regional Rowing Council in 2007 and has served on the Junior Rowing Committee and the Council of British Rowing. Having been appointed to Council in 2014 she formed part of the Nominations Panel that selected two independent Directors to the Board. Laura has been a Company Director of the Elva Lodge Hotel since 2002 and is a Director of Council Director Maidenhead Rowing Club Ltd. She has also written a paper on running events which was the Laura Lion basis of British Rowing’s ‘How to Run an Event’ publication. She has recently taken on the role of Board member with responsibility for Safeguarding. 3 Andrew has been a member of Council since 2008 and is serving his second term on the Board, having been re-elected by Council in October 2015. He is a Chartered Surveyor and Chairman and Chief Executive of Albourne Property having been with the company since its formation in 2001. Prior to that he was Managing Director of Wyncote Developments plc and Wyncote Hampton plc and Property Director for Tesco Stores Ltd. Andrew is Chairman of British Rowing’s Facilities Panel and sits on the Finance Committee. Council Director He has been a member of Cantabrigian Rowing Club for 45 years and still rows regularly Andrew Johnson in a VetH8. He has coached the club men’s squad for the last ten years and also coaches the local Sixth Form College ‘Hills Road’ and Clare College Cambridge M1. Nathaniel was elected by his peers as the Athlete Director in 2015. World and European champion in 2015, Nathaniel is looking to make his Olympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games. He started rowing aged 11 at St Leonard's R.C. Comprehensive, Durham. He progressed through the junior ranks of the GB Rowing Team, winning gold at the 2006 Junior World Championships. Nathaniel – universally known as Noddy – also won medals at U23 level and has struck World Championships gold in the past two seasons. Nathaniel made his full senior debut in 2009 while in his final year at university. The law graduate from University College London (UCL) was invited to join the senior men full- Athlete Director time the day after his final exam. Outside of rowing, he is interested in current affairs and a keen all round sports fan. Nathaniel hopes to encourage others to have their own positive Nathaniel Reilly O' Donnell experience of our sport. 4 Nicola Palios was appointed to the Board in 2013. She has a successful career running Mourant Group, one of the world’s largest independent law and fiduciary services businesses. Nicola was a junior and U23 international level cox and Oxford University Blue. She is a Chartered Director and has particular expertise in corporate compliance and governance, with a particular interest and insight to the issues faced by sporting governing bodies. Nicola is now consulting primarily to the private equity industry on acquisitions and Independent Director disposals within the financial services sector and related strategic improvement programmes. She holds a small number of non-executive directorships. Nicola Palios She and her husband, Mark, own Tranmere Rovers Football club. Fiona McAnena also joined the Board in 2013. She is the Senior Independent Director and a member of the Finance and Nominations Committees and the newly formed Investment Committee. She has a blue-chip business background, and brings to the Board her expertise in strategic marketing and customer insight. Fiona trained in marketing at Unilever, before working as a consultant at Added Value and WPP, and then was Vice President, Innovation at PepsiCo and Global Brand Director at Bupa. She now runs her own consultancy, specialising in market planning. She has worked with businesses of all sizes, from multi-nationals to start-ups; on growth challenges across Senior Independent Director many different sectors and cultures; and in both business-to-business and consumer-facing organisations. Fiona sits on a number of Boards, and is also an investor and Board adviser Fiona McAnena to marketing tech start-ups. She is a Fellow of the Marketing Society and a member of the Society’s management Board. Fiona rowed as a Lightweight for Cambridge University, and remains an active rower. 5 Jonathan is Chairman of the Board’s Audit & Risk Committee, having been appointed to the Board in early 2015. Following a 25-year career in the oil and chemicals industries he switched to the public and voluntary sectors where his career has included roles as a non- executive director and board member. His work has covered the fields of sport, health, planning, education, energy, agriculture, and the arts.
