All Rights Reserved www.longpull.co.uk INTRODUCTION Well over 40 years ago, I began to notice that the English public house was more than just a building in which people drank. The customers talked and played, held trips and meetings, the licensees had their own stories, and the buildings had experienced many changes. These thoughts spurred me on to find out more. Obviously I had to restrict my field; Black Country pubs became my theme, because that is where I lived and worked. Many of the pubs I remembered from the late 1960’s, when I was legally allowed to drink in them, had disappeared or were in the process of doing so. My plan was to collect any information I could from any sources available. Around that time the Black Country Bugle first appeared; I have never missed an issue, and have found the contents and letters invaluable. I then started to visit the archives of the Black Country boroughs. Directories were another invaluable source for licensees’ names, enabling me to build up lists. The censuses, church registers and licensing minutes for some areas, also were consulted. Newspaper articles provided many items of human interest (eg. inquests, crimes, civic matters, industrial relations), which would be of value not only to a pub historian, but to local and social historians and genealogists alike. With the advances in technology in mind, I decided the opportunity of releasing my entire archive digitally, rather than mere selections as magazine articles or as a book, was too good to miss.

At that time the company was named Webley & Son. In 1857 Webley amalgamated with W & C Scott and Sons to become The Webley and Scott Revolver and Arms Company Ltd of Birmingham. Webley's revolvers became the official British sidearm in 1887 and remained in British service until 1964. However after 1921 Webley & Scott service revolvers were manufactured by the government-owned Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield. In 1932 the Enfield No.2 .38 inch calibre revolver, based on the Webley & Scott Mark IV, became the standard British service revolver. However, wartime shortages ensured that all marks of the Webley & Scott including models in .455 and .38/200 remained in use through World War Two, and the pistol remained in service as a substitute standard weapon into the early 1960s. In 1920 the passing of the Firearms Act in the UK, which limited the availability of handguns to civilians, caused their sales to plummet. As a result the company began producing pneumatic guns, their first being the Mark I air pistol. Demand for air guns increased rapidly in the 1920s and Webley's business began to grow again, with an inevitable peak related to weapons supply for British military use during the Second World War.

Cooley My subject is the two and four barrel pistols made by Charles Lancaster of London, England, in the closing years of the 19th Century. Both the two and four barrel types were based on patents issued to Henry A. A. Thorn in 1881 and 1882. In total, about 712 of all models of the four barrel version were produced over a 15 year period beginning in 1882, 80% of them in the first five years. There were two frame sizes of the four barrel pistols. The larger, more popular size was chambered for the ,455 and the ,476 revolver car- tridges, almost always with 6%inch barrels. These we shall refer to as large frame holster pistols. The smaller frame version came in two barrel lengths, the 5% inch barrel hol- ster pistol size being chambered for the .380 Long rifle or revolver cartridge, and the 3%inch barrel pocket pistol size 2.
