HALT represents over two hundred impacted landowners in towns along PennEast’s proposed pipeline route. HALT intervened in this proceeding on February 3, 2016. Its members are concerned that the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) does not accurately assess the risk of arsenic contamination from the proposed pipeline in groundwater, including landowners’ drinking water. It is well known that arsenic concentrations in water can lead to short-term and long-term health effects, including increased cancer risks, cardiovascular effects, numbness and burning sensations, nausea, and other health risks. HALT is alarmed that FERC has failed to consider these impacts on public health from the construction and operation of the pipeline, despite clear and uncontroverted evidence that the abundant concentrations of arsenic in the areas of New Jersey along the proposed pipeline likely will be mobilized by both construction and operation of PennEast’s pipeline. Although Section 4.1.5.5 of the DEIS provides superficial discussion of the risk that the pipeline would cause arsenic contamination of local water sources, the DEIS’s analysis of this risk is deeply flawed for multiple reasons. First, the DEIS relies on a defective study of arsenic contamination provided by PennEast (the Serfes Report).1 FERC must withdraw the DEIS and base its conclusions on an accurate study. -

Guyot Science A Summary of the Research Progress and Accomplishments made by the Faculty Members of the Department of Geosciences Climate, biogeochemical cycles and planetary tectonics are the three basic processes that shape the Earth system. Geoscientists face a unique challenge in seeking to understand the complexity of the Earth’s physical and biogeochemical systems. The surface environment of the Earth is controlled by interactions between the deep Earth, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the biosphere. These interactions occur on timescales ranging from picoseconds for chemical reactions on particle surfaces to the billions of years over which plate tectonic processes and biological evolution have radically altered the composition of the atmosphere, and in space from nanometer to planetary scales. Princeton’s Department of Geosciences is at the forefront of scientific discovery in the solid earth, the environmental geosciences and oceanography/ climate science. Our faculty and students address critical societal issues, such as climate change and geo- logic hazards, through research and education at all levels. Our mission is to understand Earth’s history and its future, the energy and resources required to support an increasing global population, and the challenge of sustainability in a changing climate. NASA-sponsored astrobiology research focuses on the basic questions: How does life begin and evolve? and Does life exist elsewhere in the Universe? The NASA Astrobiology Program funds basic research that contributes to meeting science mission goals. The NASA Astrobiology Program also supports education and training opportunities for the scientific community as well as public engagement and outreach. NASA has a number of critical partnerships with other national and international agencies, private companies, and independent foundations contributing to the goals of the NASA Astrobiology Program by supporting astrobiology research, technology development and engaging in education and public outreach. Collaborations with commercial partners can be improved and expanded where there is overlap in NASA and the potential partner’s goals. Other federal agencies have established programs that allow for promising research proposals to be matched up with external philanthropic foundations that allow for private-sector funds to support research and projects that further the goals of these agencies and serve the public interest. -

Kinney, Diana Khachadourian, Pamela S. Millar and Colleen N. Hartman I N M EMORIAM Dr. Beth A. Brown 1969-2008 i D e d i c a t i o n Dedication to Beth Brown Fallen Star Howard E. Kea, NASA/GSFC She lit up a room with her wonderful smile; she made everyone in her presence feel that they were important. On October 5, 2008 one of our rising stars in astronomy had fallen. Dr. Beth Brown was an Astrophysicist in the Science and Exploration Directorate at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Beth was always fascinated by space: she grew up watching Star Trek and Star Wars, which motivated her to become an astronaut. However, her eyesight prevented her from being eligible for astronaut training, which led to her pursuing the stars through astronomy. Beth pursued her study of the stars more seriously at Howard University where she majored in physics and astronomy. Upon learning that her nearsightedness would limit her chances of becoming an astronaut, Beth’s love for astronomy continued to grow and she graduated summa cum laude from Howard University. Beth continued her education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. There she received a Master’s Degree in Astronomy in 1994 on elliptical galaxies and she obtained her Ph.D.
