By Metro Boomin & Southside) Listen to "No Heart," one of our favorite tracks off 21 Savage and Metro Boomin's "Savage Mode." A few listens in, and I feel that Savage Mode has more than lived up to the hype. It's inspiring that Metro Boomin (likely) passed on a number of more lucrative opportunities in order to work closely alongside a relatively untested artist. After months of reclusive in-studio dedication, what they have achieved is a concise, immaculately curated project that gives a look into the mind of a killer whose words bear all the weight and menace of his past sins. Though it might be the most haunting listen in recent memory, Savage Mode is most effective in its subtlety, as the productions have a faint trap pulse but are otherwise ambient arrangements of noises that sound fit for an abandoned church. As for 21, he often raps with little to no energy, but his deadpan delivery gives his message a bleakness that's probably true to life, if one could imagine witnessing all that 21 has in the brutal 21 years he's spent in the darkest corners of Atlanta. When he does up his energy -- as he does here with a quick burst that references both the Cat in the Hat and Stuart Little -- it's all the more chilling. As he begins "No Heart" with a series of rhetorical questions about himself, one starts to understand why he's such a compelling persona. After this track, I was transfixed and eager to listen to the rest of the project. Across Savage Mode , there are intermittent moments that do provide evidence of 21's humanity and of all that he actually holds dear to his heart. He recognizes that all of those things, however, are situated within a world of chaos in which the will to survive must always trump one's feelings. "No Heart" is one of the few Savage Mode tracks on which Metro is assisted on the instrumental. He's joined by another legend in Southside, and additional production comes from Cubeatz, the duo that has also worked with Drake and ScHoolboy Q this year..

Nevertheless, despite its popularity - or better, precisely because of it - in the past years trap music has been heavily criticized over and over again, being depicted as an evil force that is gradually wiping out musical diversity from the world. But is trap music really always the same? To answer this question, this Master Thesis analyzed the Italian trap music case, one of the many examples of trap music glocalization. This Thesis had a dual approach: first, descriptive, and then quantitative, in order to present the most objective evaluation possible. The descriptive analysis compared our global music form - namely, American trap music - and of our glocal music form - namely, Italian trap music. Then, the findings of the aforementioned analysis were used to better specify the similarities and differences of the two music forms, both in terms of sound and of feelings. Finally, the findings were tested using some of the so-called Spotify audio features. The quantitative analysis confirmed the two main hypotheses of the Thesis: Italian trap music sound very similar to American trap music, but ultimately feels quite different from it.

Gangsta Rap and the Trapped Mentality An Honors Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Honors in Communication Arts. By Mikalah Guyton Under the mentorship of Shana Bridges ABSTRACT This research paper provides historical background into the evolution of Hip Hop culture and further investigation into the evolution and foundation of Gangsta Rap music. Throughout this investigation, five recurring fundamental themes are recognized through patterns presented by its pioneers. The five themes that are addressed within this subgenre include: (1) masculinity, (2) respect, (3) violence and retaliation, (4) misogyny, and (5) wealth. As Gangsta Rap emerged into popular culture, it became socially acceptable to exploit issues and limitations experienced within African American communities. In turn, Gangsta rappers overcame limitations typically experienced by black males. In what follows I will provide origins and characteristics of Gangsta Rap. I will discuss the emergence of Trap music from Gangsta Rap.
