The Whippet News October 2014v 9 Breeder Referral Proposals

Dear Members, As reported in the last newsletter, our longtime Breeder Referral volunteer, Mary Downing, has resigned from this position after decades of incredible dedication and countless thousands of hours of answering e-mails and inquiries to help the public find our breeders and determine if Whippets are right for them . After many discussions, the AWC BOD has decided that her shoes simply cannot be filled by a single individual, and that other options should be considered for breeder referral . Breeder Referral is one of the key roles within any parent club, and we looked at how other parent clubs handle this duty . We have settled on two potential options that we feel could work .

Option One--Regional Referral Reps Disadvantages: Having to choose just one representative per region if many people in that region are willing to fill the The AWC website would list one regional referral role . Some inquiries from a given region might have more representative within each region responsible for handling options within a closely neighboring region . For example, an inquiries . This would require us to recruit volunteers from inquiry from Vermont would be best handled within the East each region, actually choose from among multiple potential Region, but one from Pittsburgh area might find that they interested parties (unless we go with the first AWC Member have many more active breeders to choose from close to them to come forward and volunteer gets the gig), and then decide in neighboring Ohio, and so their inquiry might be better if we go with giving them each an individual gmail account for answered by the Midwest Rep than the East Rep . (Potential referral or have them all use the same gmail account and sort solution--have one e-mail address for referral so that the through the inquiries received as a committee . Midwest Rep can see this inquiry and answer it .) Or this Advantages: Regional referral people would be in a better could be handled in the manner that the Club of position to know what is available in their region than one America does, allowing the website visitor to click on various national representative might be . A committee of regional regions, and so if they felt they were willing to also look in a reps would share the work so it would not be such a major neighboring region, they could write that rep as well: responsibility for one person . Members within a region could Example: http://www .bulldogclubofamerica .org/bca .aspx- communicate their referral needs with their regional rep . This ?id=188 solution would require minimal maintenance by the website administrator as once the page is set up, only the occasional change of e-mail address or name would be required if a volunteer is replaced . continued on page 17 10 v The Whippet News October 2014 AWC Top Twenty Event You are invited to celebrate the 25th Annual Top Twenty Event

Presented by Valerie Nunes Atkinson & her wonderful assistants Lauren & Antonio Dear Members,

As I was just confirmed this past and convenience has come a few instances month as Delegate, I have not yet been of obviously non-purebred dogs being able to attend any meetings . I will be DELEGATE’S registered as purebred members of attending the Delegate’s meeting in their breed . The Club conjunction with the Eukanuba Classic delegate provided a clear example of this, in Florida in mid-December, and will REPORT so it does behoove us all to be vigilant hopefully have more to talk about then, and help keep our Whippet registrations but I have reviewed the last three meetings’ minutes and there are accurate and honest, particularly in light of the rise of the “sport mix” only a few items of general or specific interest to the Whippet fancy, for activities such as flyball and agility, where Whippet crosses are which I have summarized below . It turns out that a great deal of often highly valued . the discussions that were held at the meetings center around Public There was even more discussion about how AKC continues Education, so I’m donning both my current hats to write this report . to combat negative public images of our hobby and sport . So, the At the March Delegate meeting, there was much discussion last three meetings, this has been a topic that has been given a great about how to increase both entries and the spectator gate at dog deal of floor time, and I think that it behooves all of us to support shows . As spectator gate is not a factor for our AWC events, the AKC in this, no matter what our feelings about the AKC overall most important points made pertain to the AWC regionals which or how we’d like to see things changed or improved in the sport . are associated with cluster shows, and one factor that was brought The AKC is our most powerful voice and really the most credible up was the need for show chairs working with specialty breed clubs source nationwide to deliver a positive message through the media to not overuse locals in their area too much and to allow the clubs and to the public . My sense is that there are many hardworking and supporting the cluster and having a specialty to have more say in the articulate people within AKC who are trying to get the message choices of judges, as if the breed club supports not just the show but right, and then get it out, and that they are doing a better job also the JUDGES, there is a greater likelihood of a good turnout . with every passing month . Much was made over the success of This seems patently obvious, but apparently it needed to be said 2013 Meet the Breeds at Javits (my report on this appeared in the and those of us who have tried to get more breed-friendly judges October, 2013 WN), and while the NYC MTB is moving to the installed at the supported entries around our regional specialties Agility Day for Westminster (Saturday) for 2015, I would ask that can only hope the right people were paying attention as that can anyone who can help at that booth or at the MTB Booth in Orlando be a frustrating process when some of these clusters want to keep at Eukanuba please get in touch with me . And if you cannot get to bringing back their same friends and cronies year after year . these East Coast MTB’s, always be on the lookout for anything in At the June Delegates meeting, primary topics centered your local area--MTB’s at smaller events, or Bark in the Park, or any around the threats to the sport posed by the various animal rights sort of event where it would be possible to show up with Whippets organizations . In particular, there was an account of an attempt and interact with the public . I’m happy to send a quantity of AWC in NYC to ban the sale of all un-neutered/spayed dogs within tri-folds so you will not be empty-handed if people want to read city limits . This would effectively mean that no breeder could sell more . When people actually meet us, and get to see our dogs, and a puppy to anyone in NYC that was not subjected prior to sale interact with us directly, they invariably like us . So, we need to be to juvenile spay/neuter, which is of course a very controversial out there, even if it means giving up a or a lure trial in procedure within the purebred dog community and the sport/ some cases in order to do this . Meanwhile, you can interact online- performance community because of very real impacts to the -be a supportive voice online in discussions where the non-hobbyist performance future, as well as potential impacts to normal health, public is participating . The facts are on our side . longevity, and development, of puppies that are altered at such At our 2014 AWC general membership meeting, the an early age . Secondarily, the Delegates were asked to vote on a membership directed that as Delegate (once seated), I pursue a motion that would have opened up Delegate approval to persons couple of issues and in the next few months, this will be done, with certain income-deriving professions, such as publishing dog and I will report back on what success I was able to have after the magazines, professional handling, or judges who charge in excess of December meeting . Hopefully by attending the meeting in person I expenses . This motion did not receive the 2/3rd’s majority to pass, will be able to come up with a more insightful and interesting report . therefore these professions are still ineligible to serve in the role of Until then, don’t forget about Public Education!! AKC obviously AKC Delegate, and of course this policy has had a direct impact on is focused on this, and we Whippet fanciers should pull our weight why I am your current Delegate instead of Bo Bengston, who did a along with our friends in all the other breeds . fine job and I know his reports will be greatly missed . At the September Delegates meeting, there was discussion of the Respectfully submitted, various ways that AKC is helping to streamline things for breeders . I think those of us who have been in the sport awhile can agree that we get our certificates and registration packets more quickly than Karen Lee ever before, and that online registration process has made things AKC Delegate easier and more convenient for us . However, along with this ease Public Education

The only complaint I have received so far came in a “tearful” Finally, winning a specialty may be the highest honor most of us email from a breeder who was “very upset” that her dog was not can imagine for our dogs, but they are not the only wins that matter . included in the list of SBIS winner, and her kennel had been “slighted A specialty may have a much smaller entry than a big Hound show once again ”. It turns out that the show where her dog won BOB was, or all-breed event, and there are all sorts of special circumstances in fact, not a specialty, so no correction was necessary . That made that can make a non-specialty win every bit as memorable as a SBIS . me wonder how many others may THINK their dog has won a However, you have to draw the line somewhere, and specialties have specialty when in fact it hasn’t . A show is either a specialty or it isn’t; always held held a unique appeal for breed enthusiasts . Whether that you need approval from AKC to hold a specialty, so there can be no will be true in the future also remains to be seen and will obviously doubt about its status . Supported entries are not specialties . Group depend on how the clubs that organize specialties handle that shows are not specialties . I have seen more or less imaginative “new” responsibility . denominations in ads, such as “specialty supported entry” (I’m still BO BENGTSON not quite sure what that is), and of course the generally accepted “specialty weekend” shows, which are pretty self-explanatory . For a P.S. I will most likely not be able to continue assembling results show to be a Whippet specialty it needs to be approved as such by from Whippet specialties. I hope somebody else will take over that AKC, and announced as a specialty in both the premium list and the responsibility. I would be happy to help show anyone interested the catalog, with a recognized Whippet club as host . shortcuts to the records in the AKC Event Calendar.
