    Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau - mehr als ›der wohlbekannte Sänger‹ Gottfried Kraus (Minihof-Liebau) In seiner persönlich gehaltenen Erinnerung sucht der Musikpublizist Gottfried Kraus die komplexe Persönlichkeit und vielfältige Lebensleistung Dietrich Fischer-Dieskaus in großen Zügen darzustellen. Von der ersten Erinnerung des 15jährigen Konzertbesuchers an ein Brahms-Requiem unter Furtwängler im Wiener Konzerthaus und an Fischer-Dieskaus erste Winterreise im Januar 1951 spannt sich der Bogen über Eindrücke in Konzert und Oper und die umfassende Beschäftigung mit Fischer-Dieskaus Schallplattenaufnahmen bis zu gemeinsamer Arbeit. Als Leiter der Musikabteilung des Österreichischen Rundfunks lud Kraus den Sänger und Dirigenten Fischer-Dieskau zu Aufgaben im Studio und bei den Salzburger Festspielen. Auch für Schallplattenaufnahmen ergaben sich spätere Kontakte. Aus vielfältiger Erfahrung und nicht zuletzt auch aus freundschaftlicher Nähe zeichnet Kraus ein Bild Fischer-Dieskaus, der mehr ist und auch mehr sein will als nur ‚der wohlbekannte Sänger‘ – ein Künstler von unglaublicher Breite, den umfassende Bildung, das Bewusstsein großer Tradition, lebenslange Neugierde, Offenheit und enormer Fleiß dazu befähigten, auch als Rezitator, Dirigent, Musikschriftsteller und Maler Ungewöhnliches zu leisten. In his personally touched memoires the music publisher Gottfried Kraus tries to present the complex personality of Fischer-Dieskau and the miscellaneous achievements in his life along general lines. Starting with the fist remembrance of the 15-year-old concert visitor of a Brahms-Requiem conducted by Furtwängler at the Wiener Konzerthaus and the first Winterreise of Fischer-Dieskau in January 1951 he encompasses impressions of concerts and operas as well as the comprehensive engagement with disc records of Fischer-Dieskau up to their common work. As the head of the music department of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, Kraus invited the singer and conductor Fischer-Dieskau for recordings in the studio and to the Salzburg Festival.

August 2021 MORTIER AWARDS In memoriam Gerard Mortier The Mortier Award for music theatre and the Mortier Next Generation Award were established to draw inspiration for music theatre’s present and future from the legacy of Gerard Mortier, the opera and festival administrator and former artistic director of the Salzburg Festival, who died in 2014. The award honours figures who, like Mortier, pursue an interdisciplinary approach to renewing the art form of opera. It is therefore fitting that the polymath Alexander Kluge will be presented with the 2021 Mortier Award. The Next Generation Award, with a cash value of 30,000 Euro, goes to the German stage director Ulrike Schwab and is sponsored by the Friends of the Salzburg Festival. On the occasion of its centenary, the Salzburg Festival – to which during his tenure, Gerard Mortier gave many impulses still resonating today (1991-2001) – and the Friends Association are honouring the two laureates in a ceremony on 17 August. Following this event, artistic director Markus Hinterhäuser joins a discussion about the future outlook for music theatre with Asmik Grigorian, Ulrike Schwab and Franz Welser-Möst, moderated by Markus Thiel. Photo: SF/Anne Zeuner (SF, 12 August 2021) A harsh drumbeat is answered by a tender note from the flute – Intolleranza 1960 is a rollercoaster of emotions for the audience, says director Jan Lauwers during the Terrace Talk on his new production. Why is Luigi Nono’s azione scenica a masterwork? “Intolleranza is timeless and eternally valid. The title may say 1960, but it is as relevant in 2021 as it was then,” he says, adding that some things may feel like a fist blow to the face, but the music holds just as many tender, sensitive elements. Of course the 20-minute torture scene is shocking, he says, but its form and the combination with the music make the scene acceptable. Conductor Ingo Metzmacher describes the music as archaic, but highly organized and written with a plan. “He poured his heart and soul into it,” says the conductor. “It is impossible to escape. Nono’s music is overwhelmingly powerful.” He explains that after yesterday’s run- through, he was emotionally exhausted. One week before the premiere, at a point where corrections to elements like lighting are commonly made, conductor and director agree that everything is just right. “I can tell the protagonists: now it is up to you,” says Jan Lauwers, who is also responsible for sets and video. During the run-through, an American performer spontaneously called out “I can’t breathe” during the torture scene.     Partenope Maestro Biography Making his San Francisco Opera debut this summer in Handel’s Orlando, Christopher Moulds returns in Summer 2020 for Partenope. In demand at opera houses throughout Europe, his current season includes Ariodante at Oper Stuttgart, Purcell’s King Arthur at Theatre Basel, and Die Entführung aus dem Serail with Semperoper Dresden. Last season saw his debut at Den Norske Opera in Norway with Don Giovanni. Enjoying strong links with both the Staatsoper Berlin and Munich’s Bavarian State Opera, he conducts repertoire ranging from Monteverdi, Handel, and Mozart through to Britten’s Turn of the Screw and contemporary works such as Birtwistle’s Punch and Judy. Moulds is often seen leading the Baroque opera repertoire. In 2015 he led Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, a co- production between the Royal Opera, Covent Garden and the Roundhouse which received much critical acclaim. Other recent performances include Semele at the Händel-Festspiele Karlsruhe, La Calisto at Bavarian State Opera and this season he returns to Madrid for Dido & Aeneas. He has appeared in Russia numerous times at Bolshoi Theatre including for the premiere of Rodelinda. On the concert stage, he has conducted orchestras including Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Concerto Köln, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Festival appearances include the Bregenz Festival, Händel-Festspiele Halle, and performances of La Clemenza di Tito with the Vienna Philharmonic at the Salzburg Festival. Moulds began his career in 1991 as a member of the music staff at English National Opera. From 1994–98 he was chorus master at Glyndebourne, after which he began his international career.

    Jonas Kaufmann Since his sensational début at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in a performance of “La Traviata” in 2006, Jonas Kaufmann has numbered among the top stars on the operatic horizon. The international press has singled him out as the “new king of tenors”. Insiders praise him as the most important German tenor since Fritz Wunderlich. Jonas Kaufmann comes from Munich. He completed his vocal studies there at the local Music Academy, in addition to which he attended master classes with Hans Hotter, James King and Josef Metternich. During his first years on stage at the State Theatre in Saarbrücken he continued his training with Michael Rhodes in Trier. After engagements in Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Milan - in Giorgio Strehler’s production of “Così fan tutte” and “Fidelio” with Riccardo Muti on the podium - Kaufmann moved on to the Zurich Opera in 2001. From there he began his international career. Appearances at the Salzburg Festival and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Paris Opéra and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, La Scala Milan, the Deutsche Oper and the State Opera in Berlin, the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan in New York. In 2010 he made his début at the Bayreuth Festival as Lohengrin in a spectacular staging by Hans Neuenfels. Kaufmann is just as much in demand internationally in the Italian and French repertoires as he is in German opera. He has sung Massenet’s Werther in Paris and Vienna, Cavaradossi in Puccini’s “Tosca” in London, at the Met and La Scala.
