2 WHAT’S ON IN NOVEMBER 2020

At the time of writing the three-tier system has just been intro-duced but there is a lot of uncertainty about the next few weeks. We are hoping and praying that this will not impact on two important services that take place in November.

All Souls service, 1 November, 4:30pm, St. Mary’s

On Sunday 1 November at 4:30 in St. Mary's, we are holding our annual All Souls service. The service will be led by Rev Lesley and will provide a space for people to remember those we love but see no longer. The service will be gentle and reflective with music and prayer - everyone is welcome, whether you have suffered a bereavement recently or many years ago. Due to current restrictions around social distancing however, we are limited on the number of people able to attend the service in person so you will need to pre-book - we are also hoping to live stream the service for those who wish to remain at home. You can book your seat through the GK Church website or by contacting [email protected] (Church Office number is 01580 211739). At the service the names of loved ones who have died will be read out - if you would like a name to be read out, whether you can be at the service or not, please contact Becky. The list is a new one every year so please do contact Becky by Wednesday, 28 October so that the list can be pre-pared.

Remembrance Sunday, 8 November

This year our Remembrance services will take place on 8 November at 10:45 in both St. Mary's and Christ Church. The services will be different to previous years due to current restrictions but will still be an opportunity for us to honour our war heroes and express our gratitude to those who continue to serve the country in the military forces. Due to social distancing we will need to ticket the service at St. Mary's and you can book your seat through the GK Church website or by contacting becky.addis@ gkchurch.org (please note that the service at St. Mary's will also be live streamed for those unable to be in the church). Rev John Tapper will be leading the service at St. Mary's with Rev Neville Gallagher leading at Christ Church.

There’s lots more going on and you can find out about it all on our website www.gkchurch.org.uk

3 INTERREGNUM MESSAGE

When we’re feeling unsure of how the autumn will pan out, here are five solid reminders of the treasure we have: Hope: In these times of difficulty we are offered ‘a sure and certain hope’. Hope, in the Bible, means something we can be sure of, because it is based on God’s promises. Certainty: In the midst of uncertainty we have certainty that God loves us, that he has a plan for us, that although we are not promised an easy time he will never let us down. Love: ‘Faith, hope and love’, it says in that famous reading so often used at weddings. Love is God’s greatest gift to us. Let’s keep on loving everyone around us. Joy: This is something that God gives us even when things are tough. Somehow it is fully possible to rejoice in God - even while praying for his help. Peace: The peace of God, which ‘passes all understanding’. It is a mystery, and very often we don’t feel his peace but it is there. If we ask God’s forgiveness, his peace soon follows.

None of us can work up hope, certainty, love, joy or peace by ourselves. So let’s thank God for them and keep on telling him that we humbly accept his offer. Then we’ll gradually see what happens.

Some reminders: support of many kinds is available through the church family - see https://www.gkchurch.org.uk/coronakindness. And anything that anyone would like prayer for, email [email protected] or there is a box in St Mary’s and in Christ Church - just drop off a note there and the prayer team will pray in confidence.

If we ask for help when we need it, give help when we can, and pray, that’s our bit basically done. Let’s do our best to trust God for the rest. Barney Mayhew

4 5 6 COVER PHOTOGRAPH

This month's cover photograph is of our new Vicar (from January) Rachel Robertson.

If you have not yet read the details or seen Rachel's short video clip please look on the gkchurch website. Those of us who have met Rachel are really looking forward to working with her as we have already seen what a treat we have to come. David Denton

CHRIST CHURCH HARVEST FESTIVAL

Thank you to all who helped decorate Christ Church for Harvest Festival on September 27. Gardens and hedgerows were raided to bedeck the church in the time-honoured way. Special thanks to Helen for providing some spectacular dahlias – if the Gardening Club Flower Show had been held, they would have won all the prizes!! Lynda Shepherd

KILNDOWN GARDENING CLUB

Unfortunately, the Autumn Show scheduled for September 26 was cancelled, and the events for the rest of the year likewise. Such a disappointment, this year being the 100th Anniversary of the original set up of the Society/Club. Never mind, work has been going on in the background for the Kilndown Nostalgia Day, (now to be held next year) in which KGC will be one of the star elements!!

It is hoped that most of the speakers booked for this year, and which we missed, will be available next year and planning for such is in hand. As we didn’t use the 2020 schedule, which included new classes, take a look at the schedule and plan ahead for 2021. There’s still time to plant new bulbs and perennials or to buy seeds for annuals. Lynda

7 QUARRY CENTRE

After many months, we have all the quotes/estimates in for the proposed decoration of the exterior and have now instructed a contractor to start work as soon as conditions allow, this will be in the Spring of 2021. We have a volunteer to refurbish the bench outside the QC, so don’t worry if you note that ‘bits’ are missing. Hopefully, the litter bin presented as a prize for winning the ‘Best Kept Village’ competition many, many years ago will soon emerge from its hiding place and can be placed next to the seat as planned a while back.

The Saturday Shop continues, and we’ve been adding a few more lines to our already bulging cupboards. We do try to keep up a decent dry goods stock, however some companies have a minimum order level and sometimes it is difficult to squint into the crystal ball and get the orders right, especially as we don’t have a stock room as such – what you see is generally what we have! Maybe a mezzanine floor would help…………? As we don’t set out to replicate a supermarket or the grocers in nearby villages, just to carry a reasonable quantity of fresh fruit and vegetables, dry goods, deli stuff and a few ‘treats’, it works - most of the time!

The Saturday Shop has always been a place to stop and have a chat, it still is, the only thing that’s changed is the customers or should that be ‘chatterers’ having to be socially distant and with the ‘one in one out’ policy for the shop, sometimes it is difficult to get the next customer in as they are so busy chatting outside!! Perhaps we need a loudhailer?

Sharp eyed shoppers may have noted that one or two Christmas ‘things’ started to creep into the Shop during October. Come in and take a look. Christmas Day this year is on a Friday, therefore the Saturday Shop will be open on Thursday December 24. This will be mainly for the collection of orders (details nearer the time) and last-minute purchases Lynda and Richard

BETTY’S TRACTOR RUN

All was going well for the Tractor Run , planned for October 11, Kilndown Village Hall was (is) Covid -19 ‘friendly’, and the refreshments were in hand, however following advice from Hospice in the Weald and the Forestry Commission, the event was cancelled. Frank Furnell (the late Betty’s husband) is hoping that a similar event can be staged in 2021. Over the last few years this event has raised £1,000’s for the Hospice.

Message in a Bottle is supported by and District Lions Emergency information Scheme

• Free to the User • A low tech, simple to use emergency information scheme • Endorsed by the emergency services • Above all a potential lifesaver & comfort to the user, family and friends.

The Message in a Bottle scheme is a simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their important personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common location – the fridge! This is where the emergency services expect to find it. They will know its there because of 2 stickers, one on the inside of front door or main entrance and one on the fridge door. It can save vital time and really helps the emergency service providing them with vital information when its needed. Whilst focused on the more vulnerable people in our community, anyone can have an accident at home, so this scheme can benefit anyone. Message in a Bottle is usually available free from health centres, surgeries and chemists but the current Covid pandemic has made this impractical. So if you would like us to send you a Message in a Bottle for Free please ring 0345 833 9564 or email [email protected] and we will get one to you.

MACMILLAN After saying in the October 2019 Village Newsletter that Joan and her Team had hung up their tea towels after seven years of fund raising for this Cancer Research Charity, it was felt that 2020 was a bit ‘different’. So, on Saturday September 26, a Cake & Bake Stall was set up outside the Quarry Centre and thanks to the many generous donations £270 was raised. Thank you to all who contributed in any way. WHAT CAN PADDOCK WOOD & DISTRICT LIONS DO FOR YOUR COMMUNITY? Your local Lions club in currently reviewing what it has done in the past and is also planning for our future after COVID 19 has been defeated. During lockdown we were impressed and moved by the way our local communities worked together to support the most vulnerable residents in practical ways but also with fun activities to raise our spirits. You will know the Lions for many activities including: • Organising Paddock Wood Carnival and Rockin’ in the Rec • Visiting most villages with the Santa Sleigh • Organising the East Peckham 10k run • Organising the annual Duck Race • Collecting spectacles for recycling for third world countries • Providing the Message in a Bottle scheme throughout the area • Raising funds to support local individuals and organisations.

BUT WHAT NEXT??? We aim to be a vital force for developing service in your area and now want to hear from you about what we could do to support the people where you live. • Is there a group needing support? • Is there an activity that would improve your community? • Could we help develop new activities? • Where are the gaps in support in your area? If you have any ideas for projects or new ways we could provide support please let us know. If you can think of anything at all please email us at enquiries@paddockwoodlions. co.uk

13 PARISH COUNCIL NEWS With the virus still with us, we try to cope, survive and emerge and meanwhile do our best. Our community spirit and volunteers are still in place; Corona Kindness to give support and The Community Cupboard for those in need; both contactable through ReadyCall on goudhurst.org.uk or the council [email protected]. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who have supported them and those who have donated time and supplies to help others. This is our Community at its best. On a positive note the new Goudhurst Play Area is open and hugely enjoyed by all those who have rediscovered it. Many children are back at school and play schools. We have a new duck house for the pond, for which we are just waiting for an anchor and then it can be floated (strange it did not come with one!). Many of us are being vaccinated against the ‘flu at least, thank you Nurse Brenda for wielding the needle and Ed Bates with his traffic cones. Destination Goudhurst is making progress (see August Parish Council News) all businesses in the High Street have been engaged. We have also engaged with the Parish Hall and Social Club Committees and The Friends of St Mary’s. Everyone is keen to do their best to ensure that Goudhurst puts its best foot forward for visitors and residents alike. We plan further engagement with other active Goudhurst community groups so that the consultation is complete, and our action committee is fully representative. Being realistic we plan to use the shut down period to ensure that as individuals and businesses re-emerge, we are all ready by spring/summer 2021. All this village consulting has brought up one significant and recurring theme: the average age of most of those contributing to the wellbeing of the community. It is inverse to most of those who have negative comments on what they think the village and the council should be doing to contribute to their wellbeing. It brings very much to mind that famous remark from JFK on his inauguration “Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country” substitute Goudhurst or Tunbridge Wells and it is equally relevant to us here today. Goudhurst is a wonderful place to live and bring up children, good schools, shops, churches and many great activities. But all ages are not playing their proper part in helping to run things. So, if you live in our village and wish to continue to enjoy everything our village does now and or could offer, then if you are not helping already, please do so. Otherwise, many of these good things will die out as many of those who provide their time and effort die out. Everyone in our community can help in large part or small to make our parish an even better place. So please ask yourself, your family or your neighbours – are we contributing and if not, why not! In this covid time of community inter-dependence it is not a bad time to start. Next month we will provide a suggestion list of many of the ways you can help and how to make contact and please tell your friends. Finally, something practical. As anyone who has taken their waste or surplus to the TW Municipal dump may have noticed, it is horrifying what is being thrown away. Many are things that could be reused: furniture, clothes, toys (some even unopened). What a waste! Why chuck it, when with a little thought, you could donate it – to a charity, 14 and for now think local. Open on weekday school mornings at the Church Rooms by the play area, the Goudhurst Village Pre-school, are fundraising, selling children’s clothes, books and toys. So, if you have any items that would help them and relieve space in the cupboard, give them a thought and pop round, they will be pleased to see you or call [email protected]. Parish Council are keen to improve communication with the community, especially during these restricted times. To ensure you, family, friends and neighbours keep up to date on Parish News contact [email protected] and we will ensure you receive a copy by email. Your Parish Councillors … David Boniface, Craig Broom, Chris Ditton, Alan Foster, Antony Harris (Chairman), Phil Kirkby, David Knight, Barry Noakes, Caroline Richards, Jayne Russell, Guy Sutton and Peter Wood. Clerk to Council. Claire Reed, 01580 212552 and [email protected]

Autumn in a photo from Lynette Edwards 15 FROM RACHEL

I’m absolutely delighted to have been appointed as Vicar of GK church. You shine as a people after God’s own heart, loving God and loving others. The range of ways in which you express that, and your unity are remarkable.

Thank you for your part in this process, especially through your prayers, and your support of Angie, David, Simon and Ali.

My family are also really excited about what’s ahead. I’ve been married to Dan for nearly eighteen years. He is wonderful, as are our three children: Catriona (pronounced “Catrina”), David and Kirsty who are all at secondary school.

Currently we live in Hereford where I’m Assistant Curate at St Paul’s, Tupsley and St Andrew’s, Hampton Bishop. We’ve been here for just over three years. I’ve experienced the warmth of our worshipping communities, superb colleagues and beautiful countryside. There’s a huge range of ways in which it’s possible to share the Christian hope here, from leading worship with our primary schools to helping bereaved families.

In particular I love being chaplain at the local Church of secondary school. There are over a thousand young people and staff there to encourage and with whom to share that God exists, that He is for us, and that He loves us. Additionally, as Assistant Diocesan Director of Ordinands I help people discern whether they are called to ordination, and I’ve been involved in shaping how we as a Diocese explore and respond to racial injustice.

I grew up in Upchurch, Kent. After university I had a career in Human Resources initially in the Midlands before settling in London. Shepherd’s Bush was home for 17 years. Dan and I were married in our local church where we experienced the importance of church family. I spent time raising our own family with Catriona, David and Kirsty being born during this time. In 2015, we moved to Wiltshire for my ordination training at Trinity College, Bristol.

I am looking forward to so many things about joining you, but especially getting to know one another and growing as disciples of Christ together.

Please keep praying

• for our family: the logistics of moving home and schools, for great friendships to emerge;

• for GK Church: that going forward together we continue to seek God, giving Him glory and sharing the Christian hope to all. Rachel Robertson

PARISH MAGAZINE

This month's Magazine is the first printed edition for six months. With lockdown it was felt unsafe for our delivery teams to leave their homes to deliver your copies of the Magazines. Now our teams are feeling that they will be safe as there is no contact required in delivering to you. Should there be any suggestion in the guidance available to us that this becomes unsafe again the Magazine will once again revert to online only.

It is good to see that U3A are functioning again. What would we have been doing over the last months without Zoom? Also we can see how The Friends of St Mary's are managing their Christmas Fair.

Next month subscriptions would normally become due for 2021. For this year's subscribers a subscription of half the usual amount will be requested allowing for the six months without a printed copy. New subscribers will receive details of the full amount (with additional charges for those copies that need to be posted).

Special thanks to the delivery team members for making this possible. David Denton - Editor/Printer

17 CHOIR It is encouraging that (for the moment) choirs are allowed to sing in church again, although the need for social distancing does not make singing easy. At Christ Church, by placing the choir in the chancel it is possible to have a choir of eight (possibly ten with care). This has once again lifted our services although until the congregation are allowed to sing our hymns are not quite the same. We are now thinking about Christmas and wondering how we can have a meaningful carol service when the congregation are not allowed to sing the carols. Sadly we have lost our choir director, Michael Tester, and with a return to at least some form of choral singing, his input not only as our leader but as a tenor is being greatly missed. Although the choir is only singing in Christ Church at the moment, technically it is the St Mary's choir. Thinking ahead I measured up the choir area at St Mary’s a few days ago. I can still only provide for up to ten singers and that does not allow for a priest seated in the Vicar’s stall or the use of the lectern in its present position. It seems none of our church designers allowed for social distancing (the Victorian seating allowance per person did not even allow for the larger adults we have these days. Christ Church was designed to seat 413!). Social distancing has had a drastic effect on our congregation size too. We can no longer fit in the large numbers required on special occasions like Remembrance Sunday and the Christmas Nativity. Amongst the choir photos for Christ Church is one taken outside the west door. It shows a choir of seventeen and in those days they were all seated in the chancel. Please think of your church musicians as they strive to maintain a high standard of music for our different worship styles in our two churches and give them any support you are able. David Denton

“Every day was a battle with agonising sciatica… but now I’m pain-free and enjoying life again after IDD Therapy.”

Sarah Gower’s back pain and sciatica put her life on hold. It was so severe, she was considering surgery. She explains:

“I knew it would be a few months before I saw a consultant, but honestly, I really wasn’t comfortable with the idea of spinal injections or surgery; I’d read about the risks and recovery periods and it was a big worry for me.

I’d seen some local magazine articles about patients who had recovered well at Wealden Osteopaths & Spine Centre. The Clinic Director James Pickering arranged for me to have an MRI scan straight away; he suspected I had some disc damage - a possible reason for my relentless sciatica. James was confident that IDD Therapy could help me; he reassured me that it would treat the root of my problem so that my sciatica wouldn’t return.

I still can’t quite believe I’m back swimming, going to the gym and sleeping S After IDD Therapy, Sarah enjoyed through the night at last. IDD Therapy has been a godsend, and James’s a pain-free holiday in Jersey team has been wonderful throughout.”
