Although relatively unknown outside of Ecuador, this dissertation will address that lack of recognition by studying his work in the more general context of the African Diaspora. It will reflect upon Preciado’s re-definition of Ecuadorian identity in the new millennium. Preciado is a poet who portrays the Afro presence as central to the national experience of ethnic diversity and the construction of a pluricultural Ecuador. He emphasizes that Afroecuadorians be recognized as an integral component of national identity, and this all encompassing paradigm affirms the existence, subjectivity, and importance of Ecuador’s Afro descendants. Additionally, this dissertation examines Afro-Latin American diasporic thought. It seeks to analyze the various ways in which Afro-diasporic subjects assert their identities and being in the world, particularly in Ecuador. Preciado’s poetry stresses the positive values of the black experience by concentrating on negritude. According to the poet, a spiritual awakening found in negritude and the African connection will lead to the physical liberation of Blacks. In other words, freedom for the people of African descent is predicated upon the conscious activation of one’s Africanness and ultimately, their own agency. Many of his works are rooted in the ethnic memory of past experiences which he recovers through the African tradition of the talking drums. His poems reflect his African heritage and emphasize black ethnic identity as positive. Finally, his Afro-centered worldview stresses the propagation of an ‘other’s’ sensibility, the v tolerance of difference, respect for all mankind regardless of racial and ideological difference, identification with and love of nature and universality. While Preciado’s poetry is most definitely Afro-centered, his works also address a wide- range of themes that transcend geographical and cultural borders. Therefore, his Afro-centric poetry should not be interpreted as isolationist.     Ecuador's Awá Win Nullification of Land Measure JULY 2007 Ecuador's Awá win nullification of land measure Quito, Ecuador Traveling some stretches on foot and others by bus, more than 500 members of Ecuador's Awá indigenous community trekked this month from their villages near the country's northern border with Colombia to this high-altitude capital, spears symbolically in hand. Their objective was to protest a recent government land-management measure that the Awá claim would give timber and oil-palm plantation operators access to a portion of their territory in coastal Esmeraldas province, jeopardizing their internationally recognized efforts to practice sustainable forestry there. On July 11-two days after the Awá arrived in Quito-Environment Minister Ana Albán produced what they wanted: nullification of the land-management measure. The government also pledged to review the status of a 14,800-acre (6,000-ha) area of land in Carchi province that was removed from the Awá territory last year. Precipitating this month's protest was a January Environment Ministry order that the Awá and the local Afro-Ecuadorian community must jointly manage 43,226 acres (17,493 has) in Ricaurte- Tululbí parish, which is part of Esmeraldas province's canton of San Lorenzo. Albán signed the order after Afro-Ecuadorians, whose roots reach back to the Spanish colonial era, argued they have valid historical claims to the area. The Awá complained the move nixed government decisions making the Ricaurte-Tululbí land part of the tribe's officially recognized 245,467-acre (99,337-ha) territory, which stretches from mountainous Imbabura and Carchi provinces to the Pacific Coast province of Esmeraldas.

(Carrington and McDonald 2001: 4-5) Participation in international sports competitions often provides “national populations”— and particularly their elites—with occasions to enact the official understanding of “national identity,” or sometimes also to reflect upon and revisit what and who is included in, or excluded from, the “national character,” and why. Such events can also give a special stage to victorious athletes from subaltern groups or excluded peoples. This essay is focused on the comments published in the press and on the internet about the performance of the almost entirely black Ecuadorian national team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup—the biggest global sports arena there is. On 9 June 2006, the Ecuadorian team won 2-0 against Poland in their first match of the tournament in the Gelsenkirchen stadium in Germany.     ECUADOR Ecuador is a constitutional republic with a population of approximately 14.3 million. In 2008 voters approved a referendum on a new constitution, which became effective in October of that year, although many of its provisions continued to be implemented. In April 2009 voters reelected Rafael Correa for his second presidential term and chose members of the National Assembly in elections that were considered generally free and fair. Security forces reported to civilian authorities. The following human rights problems continued: isolated unlawful killings and use of excessive force by security forces, sometimes with impunity; poor prison conditions; arbitrary arrest and detention; corruption and other abuses by security forces; a high number of pretrial detainees; and corruption and denial of due process within the judicial system. President Correa and his administration continued verbal and legal attacks against the independent media. Societal problems continued, including physical aggression against journalists; violence against women; discrimination against women, indigenous persons, Afro- Ecuadorians, and lesbians and gay men; trafficking in persons and sexual exploitation of minors; and child labor. RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS Section 1 Respect for the Integrity of the Person, Including Freedom From: a. Arbitrary or Unlawful Deprivation of Life The government or its agents did not commit any politically motivated killings; however, there continued to be credible reports that security forces used excessive force and committed isolated unlawful killings. On April 23, the government's Unit for the Fight against Organized Crime released a report exposing the existence of a gang of hit men composed of active-duty police. The report stated that police were part of a "social cleansing group" that killed delinquents in Quevedo, Los Rios Province.

Hace ya muchos años tuve en mis ma- nos un par de libros firmados por un tal Jorge E. Adoum; al hojearlos me percaté de que no se trataba de poemas, ni de novelas, ni de crónicas, ni de nada que tuviera que ver con el poeta. Sin embargo, no sé por qué, intuía que eran libros escritos por su padre. Nunca leí ni le escuché a él, tampoco a nadie hablar sobre su padre. Así que agarré el teléfono y, aprovechándome de la simpatía y de la amistad que el poeta guarda para mi esposa y para mí, le invité a nuestra casa. General overview The Ecuadorian Red Cross (ERC) has activated its Early Action Protocol for Volcanic Ashfall. Since June 2020, the eruptive process of Sangay volcano has registered high to very high levels of activity. According to the report issued by the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic (IGEPN), in the early morning of 20 September 2020, the volcano registered a significant increase in the volcano’s internal and external activity. From 04h20 (GMT-5), the records indicate the occurrence of explosions and ash emissions that are more energetic and 1 | P a g e stronger than those registered in previous months. From 04h00, according to the IGEPN satellite image, a large ash cloud has risen to a height of more than 6 to 10 km above the volcano's crater. The highest part of the cloud is registered to the eastern sector while the lowest part is located west of the volcano. According to tracking and monitoring, ash dispersion models indicate the high probability of ash fall in the provinces of Chimborazo, Bolívar, Guayas, Manabí, Los Ríos and Santa Elena.
