Davies, Co-Chair Keyboard instruments are ubiquitous in the history of European music. Despite the centrality of keyboards to everyday music making, their influence over the ways in which musicians have conceptualized music and, consequently, the music that they have created has received little attention. This dissertation explores how keyboard playing fits into revolutionary developments in music around 1600 – a period which roughly coincided with the emergence of the keyboard as the multipurpose instrument that has served musicians ever since. During the sixteenth century, keyboard playing became an increasingly common mode of experiencing polyphonic music, challenging the longstanding status of ensemble singing as the paradigmatic vehicle for the art of counterpoint – and ultimately replacing it in the eighteenth century. The competing paradigms differed radically: whereas ensemble singing comprised a group of musicians using their bodies as instruments, keyboard playing involved a lone musician operating a machine with her hands. -

Finding Their Voice: Women Musicians of Baroque Italy Faith Poynor emale musicians began to achieve greater freedom and indepen- dence from men during the Baroque period, and their music and Fcreative talent consequently began to flourish. Due to the rise in popularity of female vocal ensembles that resulted after the establishment of the con- certo delle donne in 1580, women composers in early modern Italy gained greater access to musical training previously only available to men or nuns. As seen by the works of composers and singers such as Francesca Caccini and Barbara Strozzi, this led to an unprecedented increase in women’s mu- sical productivity, particularly in vocal music. The rise of female vocal ensembles in the early Baroque period was a pivotal moment in women’s music history, as women finally achieved wide- spread recognition for their talents as musicians. -

The history of opera is no exception. We find varying degrees of impor- tance given certain events by different v/riters. We find va-iters who see the music and drama combination of the Middle Ages and the Renais- sance as seeds of opera, and others feeling there is no significant connection. Ho\rever, in the inindo of the members of the "Florentine Caraerata," long since recognized as the originators of opera, there v;as no doubt as to the origin of their idea. Creek trsigedy, as they under- stood it, was the sole basis of their experiments. And yet, little is knovm of the part music really played in Greek drama, the one extant example being a very short mutilated fragment of imison melody from a chorus of Euripides' Orestes (^^08 b.c), and even this was not knovm to the early opera composers. -

FRANCESCA CACCINI (1587-1641): COMPOSER, PERFORMER, AND PROFESSOR REPRESENTED IN IL PRIMO LIBRO DELLE MUSICHE by MARINA MIRANDA Under the Direction of Marie Sumner Lott ABSTRACT This research analyses Francesca Caccini’s Il primo libro delle musiche as representative, not only of her musical style, but also of her characteristics as performer and voice teacher. The first chapters embrace her early musical life and the influences of her father in her musical style and career, followed by a brief explanation of Giulio Caccini’s compositional characteristics. The succeeding section clarifies the ornaments adopted by Francesca and her father in their songs, and the way they should be sang according to Giulio’s collection Le nuove musique. In order to analyze Il primo libro as an important pedagogic source to professors and students around 1600’s, the next chapters discuss the early concept of vocal technic and teaching during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries based on treatises by Píer Tosi and Giambattista Mancini, and how these ideas could be associated with Francesca as a voice professor and “maestrina” inside the Medici’s court. -

Chapter 7: Humanism and the Emergence of Opera in Italy: 1590–1640 I. Introduction A. Groups of humanists flourished in Italy during the Baroque period. 1. New ideas included stile rappresentativo (representational style), monody, and recitative. 2. Early plays featuring music in this new manner included intermedia (singular: intermedio). Musical plays called favola in musica (fable in music) are now considered the first operas. B. An important figure was Claudio Monteverdi, who explored the seconda pratica (second practice), claiming, “the words are the master of the music.” II. The Baroque era A. The word Baroque is used to cover music from 1600 to 1750. It was applied to music later and used to describe the music as overly decorated and ornate. 1. It could be referred to as the Italian age because most of the musical innovations during the time took place in Italy. It could be called the Galilean period, because of Galileo Galilei’s work, along with other developments in science, or the Cartesian period after Descartes. 2. Theatrical age, instrumental age, and continuo age could also apply because of developments. III. Humanism and the Greek past A. During the sixteenth century, academies formed in Italy, modeled loosely on the academies of ancient Greece. B. The most important academy was in Florence. 1. This group considered the performance of Greek drama and poetry a musical event. 2. These ideas were adopted by a group of humanists known as the Camerata. IV.
