EQUIPMENT LIST FOR NORTHWEST SCHOOL CAMPING TRIPS Plan for cold, wet, windy weather. and hope for sun! ! ! !

TEN ESSENTIALS (to be brought on every wilderness outing)

. Navigation (map & compass; map to be supplied by trip leaders) . Sun protection (sunglasses and sunscreen) . Insulation (extra clothing) . Illumination (headlamp/flashlight with extra batteries and bulb) . First-aid supplies (for personal use: band-aids, Tylenol, etc.) [The trip leaders should have a record of any required medications.] . Fire starting supplies (waterproof matches/lighter/candle) . Repair kit and tools (pocket knife, etc.) . Nutrition (extra food) . Hydration (extra water) . Emergency Shelter (tent/plastic tube tent/garbage bag) Also recommended: Whistle, for emergency use only. FOOD EQUIPMENT [Menus will be arranged at the school by food groups of 4 to 8 students.]

 Stove and fuel – one set per food group.  Cooking utensils, to be tailored to the menu and group.  Drinking cup  Pot gripper  Eating utensils  Bag for food and 30 feet of rope for hanging it up.  Water bottle(s), 2 quart minimum.  Spice kit/seasonings  Pot scrubber and biodegradable soap.

SHELTER EQUIPMENT

 Tent, backpacking type. [Some are available through school.]  Ground cloth to go beneath tent.  Sleeping bag [Keep it dry! Use stuff sack lined with plastic garbage bag.]  Sleeping pad (for insulation from the ground).  Dining fly or tarp to provide covered cooking/eating area.  Backpack or day pack, depending upon the nature of the trip. CLOTHING EQUIPMENT  Comfortable hiking or walking shoes, depending on terrain.  Socks, either pile or wool. [Bring at least 2 extra pairs.]  Long underwear, preferably synthetic, silk, or wool.  Long pants, loose fitting. [Lightweight synthetic or cotton; wool or pile in colder weather.]  Shirts or turtle necks. [Wool and pile are best; have at least two to utilize the layer system.]  Wool sweater or pile jacket.  Rain jacket and pants or chaps.  Gloves or mittens, and a hat. [Wool and pile are best.]  Shorts  T shirt (see other side) MISCELLANEOUS EQUIPMENT [Although these items are listed last, they are not really optional.]

 Insect repellent  Handkerchief/bandana  Toilet paper  Personal toiletries (toothpaste and brush, washcloth, etc.)  Garbage bags (these can double as pack covers . . . )  Watch  Sunscreen lotion and lip balm. ACCESSORIES THAT ARE OPTIONAL BUT NICE TO HAVE

 Closed cell foam (e.g., ensolite) sit pad.  Binoculars and/or magnifying glass.  Camera with film and flash.  Towel and washcloth  Water filter (as back-up to boiling and/or treating the water) [NB: Trip leaders will tell each hiking group whether they need a filter or two.]  Pen or pencil and paper (e.g., 4 x 5 size)
