Reasoning about Adding Decimals

3 Mrs. Dougherty posed the following equation  0.28 = __. She received a few different responses. Evaluate 10 each response to determine of it is correct or incorrect and explain why.

Manny Sarah

I shaded in 3 rows for 3/10 and I shaded in 2 rows and I shaded in 3 rows for 3/10 and I shaded in 28 squares 8 more squares for 0.28. I counted 58 squares so my for 0.28. I counted 58 squares so my answer is 5.8 answer is 0.58. since the decimal goes in the middle.

Tammy Jose

0.3 + 0.28 is the same as 0.3 + 0.2 + 0.08.

When you add those numbers the answer is 0.58.

I shaded in 3 squares for 3/10 and 28 squares for 0.28. I then counted 31 squares shaded so the answer is 0.31.
