Background information: If you are looking for a job you need a resume. Your resume is your calling card, your advertisement, etc. It is a one-page handout that shows what a great catch you are. It is your chance to use your marketing skills to “sell” yourself—your skills, abilities, and qualifications—to a potential employer. Some hiring managers receive hundreds or thousands of resumes a week. When a resume comes across their desk, they give it a quick, ten-second glance. If it is easy to read and pops with sizzle—they will read it. If it is too long, too wordy, too cluttered, or has no sizzle—they toss it. Sizzle is about matching your abilities and qualifications with the employer’s needs. You can find valuable information on the Internet concerning resume writing. In this activity, you are going to prepare an actual resume of your skills and qualifications that you can use in your job search.

There is no official format for a resume, however, use the following guidelines to keep your resume simple:  Keep sentences (phrases) brief, under 12 words  Single space within sections  Pour on the “sizzle”—give important details  Do not exaggerate—you will have to back up every claim during your job interview  Include “keywords” –names of important tools, duties, skills, abilities, and systems for your job  Use standard size 8.5 x 11 inch white, off-white, or light gray linen weave high quality paper  Keep at least a one-inch margin on all four sides of the page ( you can make the margins less in order to keep all info to one page)  Avoid fancy type such as script, or other difficult to read fonts  Avoid artwork and photos  Try to keep your resume’ to one page  Proofread for spelling and factual errors

Use powerhouse buzzwords. Certain words evoke confidence and authority. When explaining your duties and accomplishments, be sure to start each sentence (phrase) with an action word such as: achieved adapted advised assembled assisted built cleaned completed convinced coordinated created decided delivered designed developed directed equipped established experienced generated guided handled improved initiated learned led maintained managed operated organized performed persuaded planned processed produced programmed reduced repaired served set up sold supervised taught trained treated wrote
