This dance course will provide you the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of dance movement, performance and choreography. We will focus on building technique, muscle strength, endurance, choreography skills and movement vocabulary. Dress and Student Locks All dancers are encouraged to dress in standard uniforms. Carmel Valley Middle School offers a P.E. uniform, which is available for purchase at the finance window. Standards uniforms must be forest green athletic shorts (at least mid-thigh length, no pocket) and a PLAIN white t-shirt, no pocket. Names are to be printed with a permanent marker on both P.E. shorts and shirts. No graffiti or alteration of uniforms is allowed. For health and theft reasons, sharing uniforms in NOT allowed. Loaner uniforms will be offered to any student who does not have their uniform. Dancers may dance in sneakers or jazz sneakers. No bare feet! Hair should be pulled back from dancer’s face, and dangling jewlery removed.
Failure to dress appropriately will result in participation points lost!!
All dancers must use their own assigned locker. There is no sharing of lockers! Any non-school issued lock found will be discarded. A school lock will be assigned to each student, and if lost, must be replaced at the school front office for $5.00. Grading Grading in Dance P.E. is based upon quality and quantity of student participation along with completion of dance exams and projects. Dancers will be graded as follows:
Participation Dance/Vocabulary Exams History/Choreography Projects 70% 20% 10%
Movement Exams: Students will have two movement exams on routines taught in class each semester Vocabulary Exams: Students will complete one dance vocabulary exam each semester Dance History Project: Students will create a powerpoint and poster on an important figure or time period in dance during first semester Choreography Project: Working as a group, dancers will create and perform their own choreographed routine during second semester Class Participation Participation will be 70% of dancers’ overall grade. Dancers may earn up to 5 points per day. They will earn one point for being properly dressed, one point for being on time to both 1st and 2nd roll calls, and one point for stretching. Dancers will earn two points for appropriate dance participation. Dancers will lose participation credit if they chose to do the following:
Truancy 7 points lost for the day Uncleared absence or suspension 5 points lost for the day Excused absence 3 points lost for the day Talking during warm-up/instruction 3 points lost for the day Being rude/inappropriate behavior 3 points lost for the day Eating or chewing gum during class 2 points lost for the day Loaner Uniform 2 points lost for the day Tardy to class 1 point lost for the day Incomplete stretch 1 point lost for the day Incomplete dance activity 2 points lost for the day Note received from home requesting 2 points lost for the day limited participation in class
Loaner uniforms are available, but dancers will lose two participation points every time a loaner uniform is borrowed. Dancers are strongly encouraged to bring their PE uniforms to school and be properly dressed for class. Students who choose to borrow loaner uniforms excessively will receive a phone call home and referral.
Only for medical and/or health reasons should a dancer not dress for class. Dancers will be given written assignments to complete on the day they are present with a medical excuse.
Students wishing to make up participation points not earned will be allowed to do so during scheduled P.E. make-ups (held at the end of both 1st and 2nd semester.)
All dancers will receive 10 extra credit points at the end of each semester!
