RUSHMOOR SCHOOLS PLUS UPDATE

TechStart – Helping the Community Get Online

TechStart is a new not for profit social enterprise run by Rushmoor Schools Plus and supported by First Wessex, Rushmoor Borough Council, Job Centre Plus and Future World of Work. Our aim is to help people bridge the digital divide and get online by offering low cost or free computers, low cost repairs, free training and advice, and work experience opportunities for those seeking employment.

We are based at Unit 15, The Galleries, Aldershot GU11 1PF and are open Wednesday to Saturday from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Telephone 01252 311660. Email [email protected]. Website www.techstart.org.uk.

We sell Windows ready desktop computers from £55.00 and laptops from £75.00. We also offer computer repairs from £35.00, free WiFi instore, free use of our IT training suite, free training and development courses, and free information, advice and guidance on employment and training.

Computer Amnesty

For the whole of July, TechStart are having a computer amnesty. Anyone can donate any old bit of technology they like and, in return, you’ll get 20% off one of our Silver grade desktop PC’s. The Wind Tunnel Project

Soccer at Six

The Soccer at Six football coaching programme runs until 29th August (not including the bank holiday). The sessions run from 6.00pm to 7.15pm each day, cost £3.00 a time and are open to boys and girls of any skill level aged 5 to 14. Just turn up, pay and play.

A new range of courses for the autumn term will be running in the Hart and Rushmoor area including employment preparation, computers, leisure, craft, exercise and languages.

In addition, a range of course discounts is available. All employment preparation courses are free regardless of circumstances. Those in receipt of a means tested benefit get a 50% reduction for most other courses. People who are over 60 receive a 25% discount on most course fees. Farnborough Fins Swimming Club (FFSC)

FFSC is a not for profit, community-based company providing swimming lessons, subsidised school swimming programmes, teacher training, free summer water safety courses and work alongside Hampshire County Council for children with Gateway cards. Website http://www.farnboroughfins.org/.

Summer Holiday Intensive Crash Courses

FFSC are running 4 x week-long crash courses at Frimley Church of England School, Frimley Green Road, Frimley Green, Camberley GU16 6ND. Week 1 - Monday 28th July to Friday 1st August. Week 2 - Monday 4th to Friday 8th August. Week 3 - Monday 11th to Friday 15th August. Week 4 - Monday 18th to Friday 22nd August.

Classes will run between 9.30am and 11.30am and are kept to a maximum of 6 swimmers, with a teacher and a helper in the water with them. The cost for 5 x 30 minute lessons is £42.00. These courses are for any child learning to swim or children who cannot commit to regular weekly lessons and are an excellent way to gain water confidence and build on existing skills.

FFSC were recently awarded £25,000 funding from Engage Mutual Assurance. The award followed a public vote and FFSC received 5,427 votes, 1,330 more than the second placed organisation. With the funding they will be able to complete the refurbishment of the pool at Kings International College in Camberley, by installing a high quality, rubberised safety surface all around poolside and into the changing room areas. They will also be able to purchase a disabled hoist for users with more severe disabilities. FFSC would like to thank everyone who has supported them through this process by voting and encouraging others to do so too. ******************************

KIDS provides opportunities and support to disabled children, young people and their families. Their work helps the disabled children and young people to gain independence, social skills and self confidence. National Citizen Service

Are you 16 to 17 years old and do you fancy the sporting holiday of a lifetime for just £50.00? Aldershot Town FC Community Trust is joining forces with National Citizen Service this summer to provide youngsters with the opportunity of a lifetime. Week 1 (July 28th to August 1st) is a sporting residential at a PGL centre in Liddington, Wiltshire. Week 2 (August 4th to 8th) is at Reading University staying in the halls of residence. Weeks 3 and 4 (August 11th to 22nd) is giving something back to the local community, for example by assisting coaching children in various sports or fund raising for charities.

The two weeks of residential sporting activities include sailing, climbing, canoeing, quad biking, archery, baseball and many more health and team building activities. All this, including meals and accommodation, is just £50.00. Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis and are filling fast. Farnborough Rotary Club

Farnborough Rotary Club has been successfully helping schools in the local area by giving children between the ages of 13 and 16 Mock Interviews and Enterprise Day Challenges. Rotary Club members could come and talk to your school’s children about the work they do and the paths that got them there. This can be aimed at children of all ages, including primary age children. They can also help to organise a Skills Festival where groups of children visit about 4 business stalls for 30 minutes and conduct a task while learning about a job, career or higher education opportunities.

The Academy of Hard Knocks

The Academy of Hard Knocks is an initiative aiming to provide support for young people and specifically those who are in need of guidance and role models to break the cycle of youth offending, or who find themselves on the wrong path and want to change their life for the better. During a free 12 week programme, participants are educated both mentally and physically and receive training and life-coaching from some of the top athletes and coaches in Britain as well as nutritional, fitness and personal training specialists. Participants also receive lectures from ex-offenders, local authorities and a guest celebrity over the course of the programme.

Home-Start Rushmoor & Hart

Home-Start Rushmoor & Hart is already 9 months old. They now have 15 family visiting volunteers supporting families across the area and are looking to recruit more. Home-Start helps families with young children deal with whatever life throws at them. Volunteers offer friendship and support to parents of young children who find it difficult to cope with the stresses and difficulties of everyday life. This support can help to prevent family crisis and breakdown and is available to any parent in the area as long as at least one child is under five. Referrals for support can be made by professionals working with families or families themselves.

If you have 2 to 3 hours per week to spare, you could make a big difference to a local family. Home-Start offer thorough preparation and support, and opportunities for self-development. The only ‘qualification’ they ask for is

15 that volunteers are parents or have parenting experience. Their next preparation course will be starting on 9th September for one day per week during school hours, term time only.

Big Summer SleepOut 2014

Well over a hundred people willingly gave up their comfortable beds on Friday 20th June to raise an estimated £13,500 for Step by Step, the Aldershot based charity which supports homeless and disadvantaged young people. Among those sleeping on the terraces at Aldershot Town Football Club's stadium were local councillors, Shahid Azeem, Chairman of ATFC, along with other directors from the club, and volunteers from many local businesses and supporters. Clients and staff from Step by Step joined in the fun as did plenty of young people, either with their parents or as part of a Scout, Guide or church youth group. Many of them chose to sleep in cardboard boxes which they decorated in a variety of highly imaginative ways.

Sara Durrani, one of Step by Step's clients, held the crowd spellbound with her beautiful singing and described her experiences of homelessness and how the charity had helped her to get her life back on track.

Next year’s Big Summer SleepOut will be on Friday 19th June - Saturday 20th June and Step by Step’s next fundraising event is the Christmas Concert on December 11th at the Church on the Heath, Fleet. Manor Infant School, Farnborough

Manor Infant School is celebrating its 50th birthday this year and already there has been much activity. Their children have run a sponsored 50K and on Sports Day the school unveiled their human sundial with art work designed by the children. Under one of the special slabs they buried a time capsule and the children decided what to put inside for those who will be around to open it in 2039. During Arts Week the children enjoyed taking part in constructing a mosaic from the designs they produced at Easter.

If you attended Manor Infant they would love to have your memories. On their website there is a special piece of paper with the school logo printed on it (or you can pick one up from the school office) and your memories will be used to make a big birthday book. Already many of the children attending the school have taken the time to write down some of the things they really like to do.

Shamrocks After School Club is opening in September 2014 and will offer after school care for children of St Patrick’s from 3.30pm to 6.00 pm every school day. There will be craft, sports and a quiet area for homework. ******************************

MiDAS Refresher Training. MiDAS is the Mini-Bus Driver Awareness Scheme for people who would like to use the RVS community mini-buses. Monday 4th August at Farnborough Community Centre, Meudon Avenue, Farnborough GU14 7LE. RVS members £30.00 (non accessible) and £45.00 (accessible). Non members £35.00 (non accessible) and £50.00 (accessible). Accessible training enables the driver to use the tail lift and take wheelchair passengers. The trainer will arrange a suitable date and time for the driving assessment.

Emergency First Aider at Work. Wednesday 1st October or Wednesday 10th December from 9.00am until 4.00pm at Farnborough Community Centre, Meudon Avenue, Farnborough GU14 7LE. £45.00. This course is regulated by HSE and effectively replaces the Appointed Person Course. Certification is valid for three years with HSE approval (No 38/04).

18 FUTSAL BTEC Level 3

Do you want a career in sport? This BTEC Level 3 course is open to males aged 16 to 19 and is held at the Connaught School in Aldershot. It includes weekly matches against football league sides and training as a team for 6 to 10 hours a week with a professional Aldershot Town FC community coach. You will gain coaching experience and a pathway to university. The course requirements are four GCSEs between A* to C (including maths and English).

'Have Your Say’ - Small Grants Scheme Now Open

Small grants for voluntary and community groups are available now in Rushmoor from the ‘Have Your Say’ fund. The grants are chosen and voted for by local people. This year the total fund is £12,500 which has been provided by Hampshire County Council to support small grassroots community projects that help improve the local environment and strengthen local communities. Schools and churches are eligible to apply.

Hampshire Apprenticeship Scheme

A new apprenticeship scheme has been developed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation, supported by Youth Options, offering a grant to voluntary and community groups to pay for and support a young person on an apprenticeship placement within their organisation. Apprenticeships must be centred around business administration or customer services. Priority will be given to those organisations who demonstrate sustainable employment. The minimum grant is £1,500 and the maximum £3,500.
