History  The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature was founded in 1957.  The Department began to operate its evening division of undergraduate study in 1967 and continued its operation in the name of extensive education program in 1997.  The Department started its literature-oriented M.A. program in 1993 and established its M.A. program of continuing education for teaching professionals in 1999.  The Department instituted its Ph.D. program in Literature in 1999.  The Department is currently composed of 450 undergraduate students and 65 graduate students. Faculty  The Department’s faculty consists of 34 full-time teaching members, 36 adjunct teaching members, 3 teaching assistants and two administrative staff.  Of the teaching faculty, 21 members have received doctoral degrees and 12 members hold Master’s degrees, all specializing in at least one of the following disciplines:  Literature: 14 (Ph.D.: 11, M.A.: 2, B.A.:1)  Linguistics: 8 (Ph.D.:5, M.A.:3)  Cultural Studies: 4 (Ph.D.:3, M.A.:1)  Language Education: 8 (Ph.D.:2, M.A.:6)  Given the faculty’s strong academic background, the Department has received permission to implement a second foreign language program, consisting of a team of 4 Ph.D.’s and 2 M..A.’s. Our faculty is especially characterized by its five nationals from the United States and one national from the Republic of Russia.

Curriculum The Department offers B.A. , M.A., and Ph.D. programs. The undergraduate program offers courses in the areas of literature, lin- guistics, second foreign languages, and basic language skills. The M.A. program offers literary courses in the daytime curriculum for students of literature and linguistic-and-TESL courses in the evening curriculum for teaching professionals. The Ph.D. program offers literary courses. Research  Each member of our faculty has been involved in academic studies in his/her specialized discipline. Additionally, many teachers have received awards from the National Science Council for their research projects. Currently several teachers are working on their proposed projects under the subsidy from the NSC.  The Department publishes annually two scholarly journals, namely Fiction and Drama and the Universe.  The Department holds a regional conference every year and a national or an international conference every two or three years.  The Department is now in cooperation with the History Department to explore the integrated study of Western history and Western literature.  Study of minority literature and feminism is also our focus.

Future Development

 The Department is preparing to cooperate academically with universities at home and abroad so as to broaden the vision of the Department and improve its status vis-à-vis other major Taiwan universities.  The Department is also preparing to visit universities at home and abroad as part of its effort to promote academic cooperation and exchanges.  The Department will assist the Department of Chinese Literature and the Department of His- tory in the translation of Chinese documents and materials for academic purposes.  The Department will cooperate with the Institute of Art Studies in elevating the quality of Western drama performances.  The Department plans to raise money from outside the university to establish a research fund for research projects in the Department.
