SHAWNEE MISSION SCHOOL DISTRICT ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER SCHOLARSHIP

Application Booklet 2013-14 Background Information In 2004, a fund was established for scholarships for senior ELL students in the Shawnee Mission School District. Two one thousand dollar ($1,000) scholarships will be awarded.

Governance The scholarship committee shall be the agency of final approval for the award of the Shawnee Mission ELL Scholarships. Pursuant to such awards, appropriate procedures for application, review, recommendation of potential awardees, and final selection shall be established and approved by the committee members.

Criteria for Selection 1. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be a member of the current senior class in a Shawnee Mission high school and they must have started in Shawnee Mission as a student in an ELL center program at the elementary, middle or high school level. An applicant does not have to be a current student in a center program.

2. Applicants must show evidence of intent to pursue post-secondary education and/or training.

3. Applicants will be considered on the basis of worthy citizenship, commitment to scholarship, participation in non-academic school and/or community activities and financial need.

Application Review A school-based committee shall receive and initially review the applications. This committee may nominate up to 4 deserving students, forwarding candidate applications to the office of the associate superintendent, secondary services. The district-level scholarship committee will then review the nominees submitted from each building and determine the recipients.

Community activity involvement 5. Evidence of financial need (FAFSA or 2013-14 lunch application) 6. Two references

Award Honorees will receive a $1,000.00 scholarship award to the post-secondary school or technical school of their choice.
