RIM buses, delivery vans and public utility jeepneys, is LOCK recognized as a potentially hazardous activity. Tires and wheel assemblies are heavy objects which, when inflated, pose a risk of exploding and creating a high- speed projectile which has been known to seriously injure or kill anyone in its path.

Shell is introducing new safety measures to ensure everyone’s safety while using the tire inflators:

1. Avoid directly facing the tire when inflating. Use clip-on or extension hose to stay clear of inflating tires. 2. Tire inflators have been restricted to a maximum pressure of 45psi, to mitigate the risk of over-inflating the tires. 3. Pressurized air is used only for the inflation of vehicle tires. It must not be SUMMARY: used for inflating bicycle tires or blowing A jeepney driver was using the tire inflator of a dust off clothes/vehicles. service station. While pumping air to the tire, the rim lock popped out and hit him on the forehead. He later died from the fatal head injury.

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?

1. The metal rim and the rim-lock of the jeep is badly rusted and corroded. The increase in tire pressure caused the rim-lock to pop out, creating a deadly high-speed projectile.

2. It cannot be ascertained if the driver over-inflated his tire, but the higher tire pressure on heavy-duty vehicles like jeepneys increased the likelihood of the rim-lock turning into a deadly high-speed projectile.
