Grendel S Psychological Development

Grendel’s Psychological Development

English IV AP / Mrs. Ramos

Assignment: For Wednesday, 9/27/06, use the psychological development models from Piaget and Erikson to find quotations in Grendel that correspond to his growth. Mark the quotations with the page numbers in your Grendel notebook by chapter. Make notes about which stage of growth is shown in the example and try to find examples for both the cognitive and psychosocial models. Find as many as you can per chapter (probably 4-6 total in your 3-chapter section will be good).

Each of you should look in 1/4 of the book as follows:

3rd period: 6th period:

Last names B-DE= chapters 1-3 Last names A-CASTI= chapters 1-3

Last names DO-L= chapters 4-6 Last names CASTR-H= chapters 4-6

Last names M-P= chapters 7-9 Last names M-RE= chapters 7-9

Last names R-Z= chapters 10-12 Last names RO-Z= chapters 10-12

Each of you will present and explain at least one quotation to the class for notes on Wednesday, 9/27/06.

______

EXAMPLE:

“And so I discovered the sunken door, and so I came up, for the first time, to moonlight. I went no farther that first night. But I came out again, inevitably. I played my way farther out into the world, vast cavern aboveground, cautiously darting from tree to tree challenging the terrible forces of night on tiptoe. At dawn I fled back. I lived those years, as do all young things, in a spell. Like a puppy nipping, playfully growling preparing for battle with wolves.” (17)

Psychosocial stage- younger years (1-2): Grendel is recalling a time when he was learning about himself through play and self-control, trying out a kind of autonomy by playing and exploring, even in the face of danger. The “sunken” door and “vast cavern aboveground” hold a kind of fantasy image for Grendel as he explores them.
