I worked primarily on the UK-Russia/Ukraine market, although previously I’d spent some time working in other areas, especially the Polish market during the time of Poland’s accession to the EU. Responsibilities included dealing daily with customers in various countries (incl. UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Poland, Russia and Ukraine) in their native languages as well as setting prices and long/middle-term aims for the department. I had a large amount of responsibility, and good communication (in different languages) was very important. In the course of my time there, I had several business trips to the UK, Russia and Poland in order to visit customers (existing and prospective) and transport partners. I also had several supplimentary tasks. I was one of the key members of the English translation team, and cooperated several times with the marketing and also with the personnel department on a variety of projects.

PERSONAL SKILLS

 I am very interested in cultures and languages. My University course gave me the chance to spend my third year abroad, to develop my languages and more importantly to get a better understanding of the culture and the people in those countries. Following my work-placement in Austria, I also spent 4 ½ months in a town called Joshkar-Ola (in provincial Russia, near Kazan). This was a very fascinating time of my life and I was lucky to gain an insight into contemporary Russian life. In addition to my studies there, I also worked part-time as an English assistant in a school.  Having finished my University course, I was intersted in learning another language and was able to start learning Polish in house at work. In October 2005 I also spent two weeks at a language school (Prolog) in Crakow, Poland. This, as well as regular contact with the language at work has enabled me to improve my polish to a very high conversational level within just two years. In 2008 I took an exam in Polish which allows me to enrol in a post-graduate translation course at the University. I intend to start this course in 2011.  I am well accustomed to dealing in groups. My University degree placed a high emphasis on group presentations (including ones in German and Russian) on a varity of topics. In addition, I have had meetings at LKW Walter where I’ve had to present ideas, for example my “business plan” for the department, to groups of people including directors. During my sixth-form I also took part in the Young Enterprise scheme, where I took the role of Finance Director. This also involved giving end of year presentations.

INTERESTS

 I am a very keen sportsman, and have been a member of various sporting teams (football, cricket), and particulary enjoy running. I have taken part in four half marathons (Bristol, Bath, Vienna and Warsaw) and one full marathon in Vienna, spring 2004.  I also enjoy travelling, and especially visiting different countries in order to find out about their culture. This was my motivation for studying languages and culture at University. In the last few years I have been able to spend time in most European countries and see the differences and similarities between the countries.
