Please keyboard your answers into this document using as much space as it takes to fully answer each question. Being a word document, the space below each question will expand as you type, pushing the rest of the questions farther down the page.

Once complete, please upload to your ePortfolio. Remember, the Graduate Teaching Certificate requires that you have attended and reviewed six pedagogical workshops or seminars.

1. Explain the central topic and purpose of the workshop/seminar. What are the presenter/facilitator’s goals for this workshop? This seminar’s purpose was to outline the definition of social emotional skills, as well as the benefits of these skills in the classroom to enhance learning and positive development. The goal was to outline how to promote both teacher and students social emotional skills in order facilitate incorporation of social emotional learning curricula while also accomplishing teaching standards. The core concepts of social emotional learning programs were also outlined and discussed. 2. What information in the workshop/seminar was most valuable to you? The seminar broadened my conceptualization of the school classroom as a venue for teaching multicultural competence, social civility, social awareness, and empathy. Instead of only attending to content-only, we can attend to the person as a whole and promote healthy development. It was also interesting to learn that social-emotional skills promotion can reduce violence, enhance problem-solving, and increase academic achievement. 3. How will you connect that information to your own pedagogical endeavors? This seminar outlined relationship management skills that may be useful for managing groups of students, and stepping in to help avoid conflict. Additionally, this seminar provided examples of how to model social emotional skills (e.g., apologizing, creatively solving problems, evaluate outcome) for students in order to enhance these skills in

Finally, this information in this seminar may help me provide an environment in my classroom that facilitates social emotional learning (e.g., teacher self-awareness, safe place for respectful disagreements, empathy for other students, collaborative problem solving, stress management skills).

4. After attending this workshop/seminar, what additional information would you like to seek about this subject? I would like to learn more about the developmental changes in an individual’s capacity for social-emotional skills. For example, research shows that adolescents and young adults may have a disconnect between cognitive and emotional development, until mid-20s. Would a one-size-fits-all approach work for all ages groups in undergraduate education?
